From the couple of days I had there it still is. still very safe, clean and friendly. Almost hard to believe it's in PNG. Sitting on the beach at Kokopo as the sun goes down and watching the big fish plop about in the glass smooth water, whilst enjoying a cold SP brown bottle and wishing for a bait rod with some one kilo gear and a couple of lures was just fantastic. then seeing at all repeated in the morning at sunup........ just makes you want to give up work and live on coconuts and bananas and just hang about.
I found where I want to be sitting in a few years time if all goes well.

Rabaul was indeed one of the definite highlights for anyone who was there back in the day. Flew into there regularly from Hoskins with Talair and was based there for 6 months with PX, late 70's to mid 80's. The diving, the yachtie, the flying, the mangoes, all in a haze of SP, too many good memories to list. Flying highlight was always trying to do circuit inside the caldera wall for rwy 32 in an F28...

Was based in Rabaul in the early 60's when TN used the Cosmo Hotel for crew accommodation... not the rooms straight off the bar... the crew had the dongas at the front. Lecherous Len was the Manager. No windows or locks on the TAA mess - great 10/10 Balls (dancing type that is!). The visiting cruise ships let their bands perform at the Yacht Club. Great days.

One of the many GREAT memories of PNG was 'manoeuvring' an F28 inside the harbour at '500 feet' for an approach.
One of the days they really didn't have to pay you to turn up to work.
As an aside - PNG Independence day is celebrated by a few of us at the Regatta Hotel on the Brisbane river on 16th September from 1400.
For those who either have a story about PNG - or just want to listen to a few about PNG you are welcome.

Sounds like APNG's ATR isn't coming after all,although the PX ATR deal is looking quite positive from all accounts. For those ATR knockers,I think you will find the newer generation ATRs are a lot better than the older ones. It's like comparing the Dash 8 200 with a Dash 7.

I also heard a rumour that they are desperately seeking experienced (ATR or similiar rated) pilots to get the project up and running.
I really wish these guys all the best as they have some really good people in the organization, not to mention they run an extremely professional operation, certainly the best I've ever seen and in some cases better than some airlines.
Another big plus for Hevilft is that they won't run out of finance in a hurry whilst the MRDC has part ownership in the company.

Over 10 years since I left. Png still in my blood a bit like herpes, alcohol and island girls. I see the pixie F28 at Nadi a couple of days per week and tempted to jump on it. What is going on in vanimo? van air still going? They got rid of p2-tsj? What's AOS (TS) doing these days? How did Richard Leahy pull up after his accident? What's happened to P2-KDT(?) that sat at nadzab for years and the red and white C180? At nadzab? Guts still drinking vodka and soda to keep slim? One of his ex drivers in nz once told me to get him a bottle so I got him Bombay sapphire...due to the puzzled look, I tried to explain (in my intoxicated state) that I thought he liked gin ;-)

I met William Holden at the Ginjammer

The Trader was flying William Holden in from Wuvulu and a booking was made for him at the Windjammer (I think it was). The publican's name was ??? Kent and certainly indicated he knew of the famous William Holden.
On arrival the Publican met William Holden at Check In.
"Good to meet you" Mr kent said, "I own a car made by your company."
RIP Sir Brian Bell.
It was only up until a couple of months ago that you would see him at his store in Boroko.
