Tinny,
That was the radio shop (the Big E's domain) and the aircraft stores.
The last time I was there a couple of years ago North Coast were using the annexe as their offices.

Great pics mendi, before I got to the bottom of your post I was thinking kanabea.
What's the story regarding someone taking off across the strip in a pc6?
First flight I had in morobe/gulf was in an nca islander DWA to kanabea.

Hmmm, Kanabea. Even now, the mention of that place sends a bit of a shivver up my spine.
Not half as much as Kamulai though! Nearly bought the farm there once.

Troppo - I can't recall anyone taking off across the strip but it could well have been done as they were a fantastic STOL aircraft that could T/O and land on the piano keys. We often had competitions with the Army Recce squadron who were also based in Lae. We could beat them every time as our aircraft were stripped of any extraneous equipment and were very light.

My fave too I'd have too say
Um...I know of someone in a Porter who took off across Pindik or maybe it was Mindu? cos the weather was ****e the normal way. A bloke in a Bongo that was stuck there as well said..... "Fark that!"
Thanks for that mendi63. I was flying PNH the day before I have never seen the photos of its demise.

Just had a long chat on the phone with Bernie of the Mendi Fish Shop fame. He's now very settled on his small acre property on the Darling Downs and as soon as he gets his internet working, will get him into here.
Bernie was telling me he went to PNG 1961 as a linesman, learned to fly, and started his flying with Ron at STOL.
Reverting back to the inquiry about a DC3 wing at Ron Neville's pub, Bernie states that there was never a DC3 wing at Mendi - and he was a regular patron of Ron's pub.
I remember when the Macair Porter pranged at Kanabea - must be almost 40 years ago? Struggling to remember the pilots name but I seem to recall there was either a cow (of the bovine variety) or a Catholic priest on board?
What was the first Government "P2-PNG" - the Moresby Gliding Club's King Air 200 or was it the Cessna 421? I remember the C90 was P2-PNB.

Geez Torres, I hope it was more like 30 something years ago
The pilot was the same bloke who is still the CP of Aeropelican.
There were cattle involved - I can't remember whether it was 2 or 3 and were destroyed.
The passenger was the priest at the local mission and died at the scene, not because of his injuries but of a heart attack. I have forgotten his name.
I seem to recall the aircraft that the government purchased was the Cessna.
