Troppo - I can't recall anyone taking off across the strip but it could well have been done as they were a fantastic STOL aircraft that could T/O and land on the piano keys. We often had competitions with the Army Recce squadron who were also based in Lae. We could beat them every time as our aircraft were stripped of any extraneous equipment and were very light.
