Depending on funds and sixe of your family I would go for the CBD or as close as everytime. Having lived in Malak and then in the CBD I found the opportunities (work and play) there a darn site better than in the burbs...

Good luck

Avoid the suburb of Malak.
I have a cousin that lives in a newer suburb, I just can not remember the name of it. She said it is quite nice. I will get back to you via Private Message.

Low Income mmmmmmmmmmm.

Ok try Baggot thats quite nice, housing commision style housing there, close McDonalds, directly under the flight path. Neighbours can be noisey, especially when theres been a civil disturbance. But dont worry as they have there own SECURITY SERVICE that gets around. They drive Utes with Cages, and they aint for dogs neither.

No but seriously rent is an issue in Darwin its rarther up there if you want a nice place. Alot of people are settling in New Homes in Palmerston a Satelite city around 20 mins to the south. I would stay there, but really NightCliff, parts of Coconut Grove, Fannie Bay( close to the races),parts of the inner city arent bad either. Once you get up there have a chat to some locals and get there latest.

I have lived in Malak,Fannie Bay, Milner, Night Cliff and a few others. My Car was stolen in Milner and I was held up at the Ludmilla BP once. But thats the only crime Ive seen there.
As opposed to where I live now I heard automatic gun fire down the road here but thats not in Oz.

Darwin is actually levelling out price wise with southern cities now there are lots of new apartments with seaviews to chose from . ($350K)
All in all the place is looking bloody wonderful all it needs is someone to come and live in it other than social security beneficiaries.
Try and live in the CBD if you can AVOID the outer suburbs.
There is nothing wrong with Palmerston that a small nuclear device wouldnt fix.

Lloyd.

Having lived in Darwin for 8 of the last 10 years, I don't know that one area is better than another crime wise.

Spent two years in Perth in the late 90's and was surprised that The West claimed that Perth had the highest crime rate in Australia, yet the NT News makes the same claim about Darwin as does the local rag at Mackay!

Haven't heard any of the locals use the term 3x1, I assume you mean 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom? In the mid 90's I paid about $280 per week for such a house in Anula (nthrn subs, nr apt), included pool and aircon to all bedrooms. Later paid $210 for a 3x1 unit, in Northlakes, also nthn subs nr apt.

Units close to town go for $250-$350+ (k$ to buy or $/wk to rent).

Try visiting the REINT and follow the links to Real Estate agents, they should be able to email info. Alternately try the highly disregarded NT News for links to classifieds.

As with the rest of the country, Sat & Wed are the big real estate days in the paper. You might be able to get hold a copies of the NT News depending on your location (WA?).

Just be prepared though, service to the customer is a very low priority in Darwin!

Methinks you read the NT News too often.

I'll agree there's parts of Palmerston that could do with a little bit of urban redevelopment but I'm quite happy in my 5br, 2bathroom, elevated home, with Darwin city and harbour views along with unobstructed views from east through south to west (sunsets anyone?) and an 11m swimming pool with 3m waterfall. (Did I mention its also next to a park?)

OK, so it takes a whole 20 minutes to get to Casuarina or the city on a slow day. At least I can avoid Bagot Rd.

I've looked for the old thread we did on Darwin when Radar was coming up here. Looks like its now lost in the mists of time.

Yeah, we've got crime, but show me a place that hasn't and I'll show you a nuclear desert. It's not as bad as the media beatups for ratings would suggest.

With the gas and railway approaching "they" have used those excuses to begin ramping up the prices again. Be quick if you're coming.

Palmerston's reputation as a dole bludger dump is being reduced as the Housing Commission places are sold off to dilute the concentration of welfare cases. Also the DHA have started a trend of buying whole new subdivisions and then selling every other one, so you can be surrounded by the military.

The CBD is still undergoing a bit of "Urban Renewal" so there are a lot of brand new apartment style places coming on line, but for a family there are not too many "family" homes. The burbs are still the go for that.

I've been here 20 years and have travelled out to the rest of Oz a lot. I still think, even with the higher general costs, this is the place to be. The rest of Oz needs to catch up with our lifestyle.

13 years in Driver, past 7 in Woodroffe...I prefer lot sizes over 1000m2 (Darwin CBD, Tiwi, Nightcliff, Coconut Grove and Leanyer before that.)

Don't have any 'roos in the back paddock but think thats because the goannas and stone curlews scare 'em off.

My hat's off though to the Place Names Committee that had the forsight to come up with the names of Gray and Mould'on....quite prophetic when you think of it.

Casuarina drive between 260-300

Select parts of Coconut Grove... ie stay well away from Dick Ward Drive however nice the new appartments are

Bayveiw and Valley Gardens are new and nice but tend toward mossies

Plan $70-100 rental per bedroom as a rule of thumb and come look before you sign anything... the tropics are hard on houses if you let them go and believe me the real estate folks are real keen either unless youre buying in which case you could be looking at $250 - 350k mark for an average house

Flats can get lower in price... and there are some pretty good value ones around the place

I have just done the rental run myself again..... anyone would think I love moving .. but ended up with one on the private rental market 3 beds plus office, 2 bathroom large carport garden shed, spa, fully airconditioned and great gardens for $230 in a really good area so it can be done, and the best thing.. its only 5 mins walk to the local Irish pub!

Ducks Nuts!
Went there last saturday and the sight of Christou in his Podiatry shoes over his large feet nearly put me off me tucker.
The service was fast and seats outside on the steet hard to get but worth it. As always in these nouveau restaurants deciding which toilet to use after a few drinks is a bit difficult but you look for the nuts.
Cheers

Have to agree with NC, Nightcliff, Coconut Grove or around Bayview Haven.
I wouldn't go near the CBD unless being next door to a pub is really important.
A taxi from the above to CBD is around $15.
