Hmmm... have to jump in here and correct long haul. He stated that I would not know about the hiring preferences of US majors as none have hired post 9-11.
Continental has been hiring for over 18 months. Hundreds of pilots hired there already since 9-11...... Delta has a hiring website up and running, accepting applications.
So when I wrote about issues regarding the discrimination against non-citizens, trust me I know the truth all too well!! And it is happening.
Although I agree you should do your own research and not believe all you hear. Make your own mind up, but at least try to use factual information.
I wish I could help you by offering a phone number. You can PM me if you like for the recruitment number to one of the above mentioned airlines, but I can tell you already they won't look at you if you are not a citizen.

If you call they will only tell you the stuff they have to tell you. Here, it has a lot more to do with who you know rather than what you know.
Here's a shot in the dark but may interest the BA guys. What about CX? You have the right to live in the US and the UK so you could go to either at one point. You could be based in the US when you want and elsewhere when you want. The pay is somewhere between US carriers and European carriers. The culture is also probably what you are used to as well. It seems to me that with your time and experience they would probably invite you right in, especially with the 777 time.
Just a thought but it might work out for you.

Young Pilot...dont be discouraged by this thread..you are in an entirely different situation, the industry will emerge from this down cycle and boom once again, there are loads of opportunities at the entry level and large regionals for new comers...but for a person looking to leave BA or similar, it just isn't there...remember..never leave a current job because it sucks, leave because the next job is a better opportunity...
The percieved discrimination against non-US citizens might have something to do with the ability to complete the required background checks surely to have been "tighgtened up" post 9-11 not sure...a wild guess???

I can't even try to go to your country and work unless I marry a native.
We have plenty of US pilots still on furlough.
You get NZ and Oz to loosen up their restrictions and I'll care about the plight of overseas folks coming over looking for work. It's a lot harder for Americans to work overseas with the exception of Asia, Africa, and the MidEast than it is for people to come from abroad and work here.

The original poster asked a question and I had information that I believe he should consider in his decision. I am not interested in filling up his thread with a pointless debate about this countries immigration issues.
Thankfully, it seems that this issue is only a problem at a few companies. There are many good airlines out there, including my present one, that choose to follow US law and you should not lump the entire industry in with the few bad eggs.

...as a Kiwi I had to do just that to work in this(your) country.....paid the wench $2000 and bought her a car..... you blokes are no different ....
yankiwi makes a valid point.....double-standards are the norm these days,just take a look at your "minority hiring" practices.....we green carders werent resonsible for that mess
got caught as an illegal,...I did my best ,got the boot and a t-shirt that said:
"NOT ALL WETBACKS ARE MEXICAN"
and the fourlough thing.....never been fourlouged...just fired.....and most of your whining fourlouhees are there because they wont accept other work or they are already working but still on a seniority list with another carrier
