Strike at SUNAIR

To: All Member Associations
Dear Sirs,
Request for Mutual Assistance by Danish Airline Pilots Association (DALPA)
Against SUN AIR of Scandinavia
We have been informed by DALPA that the Pilots of SUN AIR have, in a ballot, rejected a new
Collective Agreement. Unfortunately, the company are now refusing to negotiate further and the
pilots will, therefore, be striking from 00.01 local time on Saturday 10th May.
SUN AIR of Scandinavia is based in Billund, Denmark. They operate short haul routes in the
northern part of Europe. They are also engaged in charter operations. SUN AIR operates on a
franchise basis with British Airways and employs 50 pilots.
DALPA is therefore requesting the following Mutual Assistance Policies:
Request for Ban on Extra Flights and/or Capacity (Industrial Manual 2.4.1.3)
Request for Recruitment Ban (Industrial Manual 2.4.2)
Request for Denial of Cockpit Crew Contracting (Industrial Manual 2.4.5)
DALPA will keep IFALPA and Member Associations informed of any further developments
concerning this dispute.
Thank you for your co-operation.
Yours faithfully,
Captain Georg Fongern
Principal Vice-President
Professional Affairs

If there are any typerated BA31/32 pilots (especially captains) that are tired of waiting for good working conditions at Sunair. Helitrans at Trondheim airport needs pilots. 7/7 schedule (wednesday to tuesday with usually no flights in the weekend). Good pay (typerated captains start at ca 430.000 DKK) loss of licence, and free housing when at homebase in trondheim.

A strike has no winners, only loosers.
According to a former Sun air crewmember, the salary is not that great, but domestic conditions are fine:
Off nearly every Saturday, Low numbers of operations during summer and holidays etc.
That is worth fighting for!

But, there is always a but.
As aviation industry faces a downturn, is then a strike very smart if you want to keep on piloting those "silver birds" ?

"I en kommentar sier ETF at det er på tide at danske småselskaper også begynner å anvende aksepterte, sosiale metoder og blant utviser respekt for fagforeninger og de ansatte."

Men som det blir nevnt her i tråden; en streik kan ramme begge veier. Man meler sin egen kake, men man må vite når man har melet nok. Ikke alltid så enkelt dessverre.

.....and it is because of people "like you" that our industry is transforming into an industry where pilots are increasingly looking like slaves. Pay for your education. Want to be competitive? Pay for type-rating. Want a job? Pay for line-training, but there are no guarantees for a job, but don't worry, you'll be alright.

It's about time, if not already too late, we stand up and protect our T&Cs! I'm not saying that we should demand unreasonable pay or perks, but we need to make sure that we get decent pay deals and constantly work to improve our general perks.

Management will always fight this, and that is their job. Increase profits. Thats their goal at the end of the day. They will do everything they can to achieve this. It is our, our unions, job to balance this force. We have seen T&Cs slowly eroding across Europe over the past 10 years. We need to stop this now. A strike is never good, but after failing to protect our T&Cs in negotiations, then thats our last and final tool to protect our profession.

I hope that everybody will back (did back up?) up their union here and I wish you good luck!

/CP

T&C

From my point of view, a small carrier as Sunair cannot offer the same conditions as a major airline or even a major cummuter carrier,

Sunair operates aircrafts with approx 30 seats so to keep the service the salaries has to reflect that.

This must be obvious also for union people.

Next comment.
Som pilots in SAS wanted to strike, but didn't
That is responsibilty!

30 seat aircraft are able to earn profits, just not as large sums as larger airliners. And when you take into consideration that the Jetstreams a dime a dozen (or not so far away) in addition to the fact that FOs with said company start as baggage handlers (there`s no other way in) and also either pay for the rating or are bonded, as well as receiving next to nothing on the paycheck, well, then the company should be making a fair amount of money. If they`re just breaking even, even when they`re keeping training costs and wages at a minimum then somebody should really take a good hard look into the accounting department.

Capt Prop, well said. About time to put the collective foot down to protect T&Cs. Don`t fly with cariers who don`t pay their employees, or who don`t provide the raing and training necessary for the pilots to be licensed crewmembers. And this means all crewmembers. Not forgetting the CCs here.
