Not that cold, average around -35, centigrades that is. Sometimes it can get down to -60, but you will get used to it. If you don't freeze to death before that.. But there could be a day or 2 in the summer when the temp gets above zero, very nice.

Seriously, you are going to a very nice country with high standard of living and very nice people. Can't really comment on the money issue, but that amount sounds like enough, depends what you're used to, of course. Oslo is an expensive city, but I've never lived there so don't know about the rents etc.

Good luck.

Hi.

I am guessing that it is 8000 euro a month, or?

If it is, then it's a very good job, I would say, and you get more than enough to survive here.

And come soon, so you get to experience the summer - it makes the winter a tiny bit better when you know what's coming

1000 a month should be good for a single person

From what I have heard from all the estate agents I know (only three, but still..), is that Finn.no is the place that most agents and private people use.

I have a link here with apartments from the whole Oslo area.

http://finn.no/finn/realestate/letti...TINGS&siteId=1

The very first ones are just garage spots, and after that, some dorm rooms (i.e. bathroom in one room, kitchen-living room-bedroom in the other.)
You get regular flats from about 4500-5000 NOK.

Here are apartments from 8000 NOK, and that's about 1000 Euro. (1 Euro = 8.1701 NOK)

http://finn.no/finn/realestate/letti...TINGS&siteId=1

You can get some really nice ones for 1000 Euro.

Just be careful where you rent. Some places in Oslo that aren't as good as others

I am terribly sorry, but I don't think they have it..
I've tried to find a translation page too, but doesn't seem like anyone does Norwegian to English.

If you see one that you like, or let me know what type of flat you're looking for, I can try and translate them for you.

Let me know if I can be of assistance...

Base in Oslo

I’m assuming you’ll be based at OSL/ENGM. Concerning your salary, it all comes down to what you’re used to… I guess. Keep in mind that, if you’re working for a Norwegian company, you can expect to pay 40-50% in income taxes. If your company is based outside of Norway, it’s probably a better deal.

The cost of a flat or apartment varies a lot from the outskirts of Oslo to downtown, and it, also, comes down to what you want. Living near the airport or in downtown Oslo, it both has its pros and cons. Like SE mentioned, I can be helpful with the translation of ads, and questions about location.

Moving to the first world????

This is to point out that Bushboy may have listened to his local news for a little bit too long.

Oslo is the only place in the world I have been on the receiving end of an armed robbery(a big old screwdriver). My sister has been raped twice in the fair city of Oslo, and my cousin raped/beaten and left for dead downtown. (Only the armed robber was of Norwegian descent, the rest were recently arrived refugees).

However, I live in the US. I do not lock my doors, I leave my garage door wide open and I have never had anything stolen yet. My tapwater is great, my kids school is excellent, even without medical insurance you can go to any hospital if you are in an accident and get treated(they have to by law).

8000Euro is pretty low pay for a month on a 300. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in. Also, be careful when it comes to your tax status. If you are in country for too long you will be taxed by Norway. They have some of the highest payroll taxes in the world. If you do not have a family to take advantage of the gov't run childcare facilities and such it will really suck to see your 8000 become 3500.

There are lots of jobs out there right now, I know 3 guys that have turned this one down already.

Amira Air in Vienna is looking for pilots also. Much better deal from what I hear.

Good luck,

Expensive, expensive, cold, xenophobic, and expensive...thats Oslo, but if you need to find out, leave for Oslo now, there is 12 week window, where the beaches (sorry rocks and shale near sea) are packed with the few who have not got a boat, hut in the mountains or Spanish flat.
It will bring you to a whole new level of bored you cannot imagine exists, although you will find the women aggressively accomodating. Good luck

Aaaaah, only problem is the bill handed to you upon check out. Or has this changed also? Free health care? Like in Norway?

Free healthcare?

If im not mistaken, i believe we also pay for healthcare in Norway by paying a reasonable amount of tax. Only difference is that everyone chips in so everyone gets the same, and in the US they have another system where you get the best coverage by having a med insurance. Wich one you think is best i dont know and dont care but some how some way they always get your money.

Now to the question if 8000 euros a month is enough to survive in Norway. Quick head calc and i come up with almost 800000 kr a year, and that my freinds is more than enough to live pretty damn sweet in Oslo if not even all over the world. Now someone complained about high taxes, first of all income tax in Norway isnt that bad if you look at other european contries with the same standard of living, taxes on other stuff like cars, fuel, beer, sigarettes etc etc and the m.v.a (25%) on everything we buy makes us probably nr 1 tax country in the world ( i think) so if you dont do anything of the fun things youre good
Take my calculations here with some salt and maybe some timian since i am not a certified taxlawyer, but 800000 kr a year, - 50% taxes = 400000 kr a year in net income(roughly). thats around 50000 more than the average Norwegian gross yealy income. And if our American freind also has a wife he`s bringing over then the taxes wont be that bad since he is the only person that brings food to the table. Then again if shes not like other American women and likes to work (bad sterotype, i know) then youre looking at atleast 1mill kr a year for that family. Lets just say that only 55+ SAS captains make that kind of money

Sorry for my spelling or if i offended anyone of different races, colors or cultures with my "small" answer here, just trying to help a yank out with some answers i think most Norwegians agree on. And wouldnt it be fun hearing someone on Oslo app saying: "putting the numbers in the box" or just "roger!" on a clearence you gotta love them!

And about the cold weather, yes its cold in the winter, but then again what better time to go skiing or play hockey or whatever. But dont move to Norway if you want to lay on the beach! we fly down to Spain to do that.

There is an organisation called "Network Norway" (or something along those lines) spezialicing in helping foreigners find apartments, kindegardens, carretailers and all the other stuff we find obvious. They also help people to get into the social scene, both with Norwegians and people from their members respective country.

8000 Euro is plenty

Mine damer og herrer!

In order to make the 8000 Euro per month a US pilot will have had to pay for his own training up to at least a Commercial and Flight Instructor certificates. That is a large investment that has to be recovered with interest. In addition this person will bring a Challenger 300 type rating alon, roughly a 50000 Euro value. (Training cost+transportation+lodging+salary for the duration the type). Additionally, as a pilot you will be exposed to a lot of crap in a lot of different countries, I am taking meds long term for something that I picked up on the job, something that could potentially kill me. (no, not that. That causes your schlong to fall off from what I have been told). This has to be factored in. We are not working in a nice safe office where the biggest danger in our day is that we may fall off the chair.

In addition someone just paid 20 million for an airplane. Do you guys think that a few thousand euros a year will make any difference to this person? And if it does he or she can not afford an airplane in the first place and shouldn't buy one.

We are not bus drivers. We are Limo drivers damn it, and lets be proud of that. Too many of us are selling ourselves entirely too cheap. Nothing wrong with the bus driver profession by the way. I have a commercial drivers license myself, I love to drive a big ol' truck for a friend of mine every once in a while. But I make him pay me what his regular driver gets. Just because it fun does not mean I am going to do it for free.

I will now step down from my soapbox.

Takk for meg, og ha en flott dag alle sammen.

PS. If you get the bill and walk away from the hospital what are they going to do to you? If you didn't buy insurance because it was more important to get those shining spinner wheels for your whored up car this month that is piss poor planning. And if you are dead broke you have gov't insurance anyway. It is called Medicare or Medicaid, I can never remember which is which. One is for poor people, the other one for retired people. oops. I just got back upon the soapbox
