well feel free to comment on what you think is wrong, I try to cross check my posts but some will get through, for instance the post re. Shebekino, Russia claims they are not in the village but troops have been geo located in the streets of the place in other threads. It is easy to criticise without putting up reasoning behind it.

That wasn't a pop at you (as I'd have thought was obvious) but an observation based on the largely unquestionng acceptance of material particularly from the notoriously unreliable and untrustworthy twatter - so many of whose publications and postings are so obviously faked.

......
Professor Michael Clarke talking about the dam. This seems to be a reasonable analysis by someone with good credentials since he used to be DG of RUSI:-

It appears the London and Washington are responsible for blowing up the dam.. even the wicked witch looks like she does not believe it.
Take the following with a pinch/grain of salt.
So-called analysts consulted on the TV news here have said that the turbine generating station appears to have been blown from the inside. One other comment (which I have no way of checking) was that the base of the dam will continue to hold a minimal level of water, as it was the roadway top section that the Russians needed to put right out of the equation.

Watching this the flooding will appear to effect Russian held territory even more, they say it will take 4 days or so for the lake to drain. But the environment is the one that will suffer.
Hands up who thinks the UN will do anything about it? *Crickets*
Hands up who thinks anyone will stand up and hold the UN accountable for their lack of action? *More crickets*

The Russian's are in a situation where they have effectively lost the War.
From an assumed weekend jolly through the countryside by their armored formations with the trailing support units taking up residence they have found themselves in pretty much a stalemate with the Ukraine forces.
At this point they are faced with the anticipated Spring Counter Attack by Ukraine forces.
All of which forces them to consider extreme measures to place them in the best position possible.
The destruction of the Dam makes very good military sense and collateral benefits outweigh any concerns of condemnation.
The electrical output of the Dam is gone and not to be replaced until the Dam is rebuilt.
The area below the Dam is flooded and shall become an unpopulated area that is filled with wet muddy ground.
The agriculture use of the land has been destroyed for this year.
Military use of the flooded area makes it unusable by the Ukraine Forces which requires. them to use other areas for any effective counter attack (at least in theory).
As to all the hand wringing about damage to the environment, wildlife, etc.....the Russians do not care one bit.
As to the loss of life and property by the people of Ukraine....agains the Russians do not care at all about that.
A couple of questions are begged......what actual effect did the Dam destruction have on Ukraine Plans and ability to use the flooded ground and does the area no longer flooded above the Dam provide a new route of attack?
The other question is what tactical choices exist now for the both areas....above and below the Dam?
What effect upon the civilian population has the destruction of the Dam going to have?
As to the UN....what interest has it had over the Ukraine War considering the Russian presence on the UN Security Committee and the Veto Power they have by rights of their seat on the Committee?
This might an opportunity to take a realistic view of the situation and perhaps be able to determine the real value of the Russians latest crime against Humanity in their conduct of this aggressive war.....all of which violates International Accords held so precious by the UN.
With people like Putin and his close supporters holding control of nuclear weapons (Lots of them) that makes dealing with them a very difficult thing and much more dangerous than the Allies dealing with the Axis powers during WWII.

There was a picture of him supposedly announcing it at the time.

I agree with you, and if I had been the Russians I would also have blown it, as it narrows the potential offensive areas a little. However I do not believe the Ukrainian's would have advanced below that dam knowing the potential of it being blown, unless they had a plan to capture it beforehand, similar to the German strike on the Fort at Eben Emael prior to their move west in 1940. However those types of operation are fraught with risk, and I do not think the Ukrainian's ever planned to move below that dam while it was in Russian hands.
Cheers
