Royal Air force does seem under-represented. I see Dame Vera Lynn has been made a CH. Back in the 80s when I was Treasurer of RAF Equitation , the sqn ldr who was Secretary (sorry, cannot recall his name) was DV's son in law. She came along with her husband to every competition, mainly Cranwell and Halton, and presented the prizes. She was a delightful person and did the job brilliantly. Congratulations and thanks, Dame Vera.

I seem to remember him Chinook, hanging in a load net on the winch of a parked Wessex at Upavon, but I could have got him mixed up.
Still, ref the comments on RAF awards, I do sometimes wonder whether it's ingrained in our organsational DNA as this is a comment that comes up every year. The RAF has always had a reputation for being a bit more egalitarian than its sister services - family ties, Regimental history, school attended have always been less important than aptitude and ability, so maybe when people do well it's just viewed as a case of doing your job rather than anything deserving of an award. Indeed, it would be interesting to see how many RAF recipients were written up by a RAF chain of command or by a Joint CoC. Maybe I'm being overly generous in equating it to our egalitarian nature, maybe we just aren't as good at recognising people as we should be.

Service numbers
My service number starts 801 and if I'd stayed to age 55 would have retired 7 years ago.
The WO honoured has number starting 821 which gives an indication of number to join time. The AVM,one Gp and Sqn Ldr have 802 numbers. Are they former Apprentices and if not too personal, over 55?
PS. Anyone know how to keep 2 Windows open at once on a kindle so I don't have to write the info down when replying on PPRUNE

I was an 802 and joined in 85....not an apprentice and not over 55!

Service numbers used to be batched, I'm an ex Technician Apprentice and all of us (unless we remustered) were '815's from the early 70's until the scheme ceased in the 90's. It used to be possible to work out peoples base trade from their service number, sadly lost when the new system was introduced.

can't really complain if you believe the hons are given on merit - you'd expect year-to-year variation in awards between the Services
If , on the other hand, you think they're some sort of automatic entitlement ..................

Nutloose, do you know Claire Williams? Do you know exactly what she does within the Williams F1 company; how hard she works; how her efforts, leadership and vision have contributed to the company? How is this any different from Wing Commander Bloggs running the RAF's squadron?

You missed the point I was trying to make.
Possibly because one has reached that position through sheer hard work that is being rewarded by an honour and the other possibly simply because of their birth.
Rather like awarding each other awards, simply because they are your children, such as what happens within the Royal family.
