Not really as it is rumoured Mr Salmond will ask for another vote in five years time thereby causing more uncertainty and financial loss to the people of Scotland!
That is not a given.
Gentleman Aviator
If Scotland leaves, where is the other 'Kingdom' for the English crown to be United with?
The other theory is that he fully expected not to win this (although the margin looks decidedly narrower this morning), but intended it as a springboard for demands for greater devolution.
Yorkshire, obviously!

Angus Robertson Said...
2011 saw a Russian aircraft carrier caught dumping waste off Scotland’s coast after being tailed by the Royal Navy destroyer HMS York. At the time, the Scottish National Party’s defence spokesman Angus Robertson accused the Russian navy of “fly tipping” and “bad manners.”

Of course even Scotland joining England and Wales didn't give rise to 'The United Kingdom', that title not appearing until the Kingdom of Ireland became part of the union in 1801 (94 years later). Given Irish independence didn't lead to 'The United Kingdom' ceasing to be I'm not sure why Scotland leaving should either, what with a union of historic Kingdoms still existing with or without them.
Perhaps the pettiness of Scots Nats is making them want to take that too? Or is it the mistaken belief that international treaties signed under the title 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' won't exist if they secede from the union, plunging the rest of the state into the same pit they will enter if the empty rhetoric leads to a yes vote? Are they going for the 'misery likes company', "we'll be screwed but hopefully we can drag you down too" approach?

As for Scotland surely that just remains the Kingdom (or Queendom) of Scotland - Alex plans to retain HMQ as HoS.

So the UK will stay the UK, but what will the new Scotland be called?

The letters page in the Times today, the first letter about this issue was very eloquent. By Mr Gerald Brown." That Scotland has the chance to shake off the legacy of elitism and exclusion is fantastic".
And more - and I know exactly what he means.
The Queen has been incredibly silent. Is she even still alive? Now the time for her to speak up, if she still can, for what she stands for.
Its all slipping away from England these days, all of it.
If Scotland goes it will be cataclysmic. Don't laugh in your beer, it will be.
Back on this piss thread: Scotland will probably go for a smaller less expensive and more practical maritime force in the years ahead.
Will it be swallowed by Russia? Time will tell but somehow I rather doubt it.(The Soviets and Russians generally loved the poet Robbie Burns, and are somewhat kindred spirits I sometimes observe.
Anyway enough, as a loyal Britain I truly hope Scotland stays with England but its slipping away, time is short to save it.

At the risk of heading back towards the thread, has the issue of tech transfer to a foreign power been mentioned? Some of our current and future kit (does the SNP want any F35s?) might not be so easily transferred to a country outside NATO and/or the EU. I suppose that leaves a theoretical transfer (cash value) but that doesn't exactly help Scotland quickly establish an air force!

It's a valid point Twon. With the efforts that Salmond and the SNP are going to try to get unilateral nuclear disarmament of the UK, and the damage Scottish independence would do to the UK's international standing, I can see no chance that an iScotland would have any access to anything that is UK/US Eyes Only, or subject to US FMS restrictions.

I was also thinking A400, typhoon etc that a European partners might not be keen on us (rUK) just giving the kit away. The risk of the tech making its way somewhere it shouldn't be - perceived or real - could result in a few objections. Before posters point out that I am discussing what will still be a commonwealth country whose citizens can(?) still join the RAF, we don't always share things with "friends" in every area of military business.

Good letter in yesterday's Telegraph exploding the myth that Rabbie Burns would have supported independence. He wrote a poem on that exact topic:
O, let us not, like snarling tykes in wrangling be divided,
Till, slap! come in an unco' loon and wi' a rung decide it.
Be Britain still to Britain true, amang oursels united
For never but by British hands main British wrangs be righted.
