PN, thank you for your advice... has certainly cleared a few issues in my mind. It looks like I've just got to go for it and prepare that much better than the other candidates.
airborne_artist, I've gone through the university process and got excepted by several universities, but by the time I've been to OASC I will have missed the boat for my university course... my original plan had been to go to university before joining, but I thought that if I can do what ive always wanted to do now rather than in 3 years, why not.
I'll post somewhere on these forums to let people know of my experiences and how I get on .

Bear in mind that you can accept a university place, and then defer it for a year, which is how people take a Gap year. Nothing to stop you deferring, and then deciding.
I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
Sam,
I suggest you do three things.
Find your local Air Training Corp Sqn and ask to join.
Go to your Armed Forces Career Office, it may not be in Nelson, and they will be able to give you advice too.
Try your school careers teacher.

PN - one night a week of late-night (til 1930?) opening might be worth a try? Most schools/college finish at 1530, but the last appt in most AFCOs is 1600.
My daughter wanted to go to see the RN ACLO - had to miss c. three hours of school as she could only offer a 1200 appointment on that day.
The local ACLO is only accessible locally (within 20 miles) on two days a month, as she has such a large territory.

Certainly give them a ring. I'm sure that they would be more than happy to help, and perhaps shows you are keen . You never no they might be suddenly closed that day, you wouldn't know if you don't phone .

Army Air Corps Pilot
I’m just looking for a bit of advice. I'm currently in the process of rearranging a date for the AOSB main board because I was ill on the week I was due to attend. I have not been sponsored through AOSB etc by the AAC but I understand that means very little since your career after RMAS is not decided until interviews in the 2nd or 3rd term.
I'm 25 years old and am interested in becoming an officer in the AAC. I just want a bit of advice regarding aptitude tests and grading assuming I pass AOSB. When do aptitude tests and flying grading take place? If I were to pass AOSB and be offered a place at RMAS could I sit them before I start the commissioning course? It would most likely be September or January entry.
I actually joined the RN in 2005 but left after seven months as I thought I’d get more from a civilian career and I reckonedI’d be able to afford my own flying training after working for a few years. I’ve since come to regret that decision even although the civilian career is on track. I passed the Navy aptitude tests well and I also passed Navy flying grading and was wondering if these results could be transferred or something.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, particularly from anyone in or wishing to be in the AAC.

Waiting Patiently...........
My lad went to OASC in late March and we haven't heard anything yet. He is currently doing his GCSEs and then hoping to get into Welbeck - he has been down for visit and interview.
The fact that he is kept waiting with no feedback for sooooooo long whilst he is doing exams is an unnecessary burden.
Anyone out there who has been through the same process who can shed some light on the process and timing???

Phil,
Indeed. It is often called 'chopped'. However on my initial course one of the cadet's whose father was a tug-boat skipper died. This meant that his brother needed help to keep the family business going.
The cadet was a first rate chap and he was not allowed to leave until he had finished his initial training. Once he was ready to graduate there was then an opportunity to decline a commission and leave, which is what he did.
I suspect that the staff simply wanted him to continue to the end.
The other way is voluntary withdrawing from training.

OASC - 12 Months until Re-application
Hi guys,
I still havent made my mind up about FAA or RAF so bear with me on this hypothetical question.
Upon applying for the RAF as a pilot when i graduate, i will nearly be 23 (any older and i cant apply).
I was wondering (should the worst happen and i be told to re-apply in 12 months) would i be able to head back to OASC because my initial application was made when i was 22?
OR,
If i couldnt apply again with the RAF and attempted the fleet air arm (who also use OASC) would the 12 month wait still apply despite the application being made through the Navy?
If anyone could shed some light on the subject, that'd be great.

I don't think the RN would take any specific notice of what the RAF had told you.
Bear in mind that you can only take the aircrew aptitude tests twice. If you applied for the RAF, were told to wait 12 months, then applied for the RN, and failed/told to wait, you'd have used up your OASC tickets.

RAF pilot is 23 on entry, bust! I would check with local AFCO to see if you can apply earlier, & then wait for OASC results/graduation results
Can you apply earlier? Indupitably. Nothing wrong with applying when ready and taking the tests etc.

My AFCO told me to apply around xmas time as application takes around 6 months, so if i do that it should be okay.
Apply in September, when its quieter, would be my suggestion. You'll then get an answer in Feb/March, and if you really blow it, then you'll be able to start applying for graduate jobs in the milk round. If you succeed, you can then get an early bid for a place on IOT in September.
