Do you carefully test all the patches to make sure they don't accidentally break anything else, and run the risk of a vulnerability being exploited while you're testing the patch.
I am suspicious that there has been no mention of our Green bretheren here ... is it really limited to the two blue services?
What I think some are forgetting is that there needs to be a balance between locking systems down to ensure 100% security (no IGS, no e-mail to external agencies etc) and letting us have usable systems that some of us have been battling for for years.
STH
Useable System versus Security??
Quote "The only way to avoid this kind of nasty is to not allow any desktop Internet access, block all the USB port usage, fit CD drives only to 'special' machines, and filter the email all to hell. Then the users bitch the system is unusable for all the things they want to do."
I thought that's what they had done already At least, that seems to describe the system we've got to a 'T' And as for the new security system for laptops - how the does anyone manage to take a laptop on the road now while following the latest security restrictions?

STH,
No mention of our "Green Bretheren", who do you think infected the two blue services!!
(I'll hold the "JOKE" sign up now, in case anyone missed it, not that it was/is that funny!)

No mention of our "Green Bretheren",
The worm you're alluding to has 2 other modes of transmission, via network drives and USB devices. Once on a network it also has a mechanism for scanning for weak passwords. While the patch (MS08-067 IIRC) deals with the most egregious vulnerability, applying it doesn't protect you if someone uses a USB stick they've previously used in an infected home PC...

Is it cured? Back to work on Monday (EGVN) after a weeks well earned leave. Are we back up and running or do I have to go in via the stationery store for more memo pads and chinagraph pencils?
