You wouldn't believe how the virus got on to the system if what I've been told is true (word is that it's actually a very nasty worm), However I'm not going to say what I’ve been told here on an open forum.

Its ok though lads and lassies because we've got everything written down on big, chinagraph display boards! Oh no, that's right...we were told to stop using them because BO(LLO)CS is the future.

Not just RAF and RN.

Also I got one after Christmas it put an Autorun.INF file on each had drive which had a call to a boot file - rescycle.exe (sic).

I only found out when I tried to Open a drive and got that error message - I don't usually Open drives using My Computer. Quick search on the internet and I followed the advice on finding and deleting the Autorun files.

It will replicate to pen drives and USB drives too. Must admit, I have two rarely used USB drives so I must check them now. You also need to empty the recycle bin and check backup sets.

I was told, quite seriously and by a very po-faced SNCO RAFP that it got in 'through the phone lines'.

Well f*** my old boots - I hadn't expected it to come in over the fence.

The Register has a story here although no technical details.

It wouldn't surprise me at all - my day job is selling IT security software, and the number of times I see that customers haven't got up to date patches and all the rest it's no surprise that this sort of thing happens.

BTW, for a laugh, check the "Odds and Sods" for some fun stories - the "pooing doll", the "natural harvest" recipe book, the "humping dog" USB stick . . . actually, maybe THAT'S where the virus came from !

The NR Fairy - I'm rather skeptical about the authenticity of that article you've linked to.

An article, apparently written buy Lewis Page, in which the RAF hasn't be blamed. Its can't be his handiwork.

Really LPs article doesn't add anything to the brew. Now the story I heard, and eminently believable is tha someone left a door open, if you follow my drift.

BBC reporting that

Computer virus hits navy e-mails

A computer virus has attacked the Royal Navy's communications network, knocking out e-mails and the internet.

HMS Ark Royal, which left Portsmouth for Liverpool on Monday, was still without the system on Thursday.

An MoD spokesman said the weapons and navigational systems were unaffected by the computer virus.

He said personnel were able to use "welfare phone systems" to contact family but would not comment on reports that 75% of the fleet was affected.

It was understood the problem started last week, but the MoD would not confirm how long it had been going on for.

An MoD spokesman said: "The weapons and navigational systems remain unaffected by the computer virus.

"Action was immediately taken to isolate the infected systems and commence virus-cleansing procedures to protect from re-infection.

"The ship [HMS Ark Royal], which is operating around the UK, is fully capable of undertaking all operational tasking.

"All crew members are still able to communicate with families via the welfare phone system and personal mobile phones."

And when we do get the system back again, obviously first 2 or 3 days its back on JPA will freeze again due to be overloaded with people trying to catch up with FSI and other claims

Joys of tech eh?

First became aware of it earlier this week.
Can't say where it was obviously but some staff were alledgedly (sp) sat at desks doing not alot. Must work in paperless offices.

p.s careful analysis of the facts stated in this thread should indicate that none of us are aboard one of Her Majesties Ships.

Nothing wrong with JPA, worked fine when I used it today. It was everything else on the unit IT wise that was hooped (except my terminal which was clean as a whistle. However haven't used it in the last week).
