Purhase of Fuel from the RAF.
Hi Folks,
Does anyone know if there is a mechanism for the purchase of aviation fuel at cost to RAF (or any MoD for that matter) employees. Something along the similar lines to the QR stating that should you own an aircraft, then it will be hangered FOC. Looking to start another flying club, and wish to reduce the cost of training for ab-initios to something reasonable.
Cheers

Its very similar to the process used to claim monies for services back from visiting foreign military a/c.
I'll see if I can find out anything useful at work tonight although I can't make any promises from a night shift.
Otherwise can I suggest you contact a F&L section on one of the larger stations (Brize for instance) and ask them. They deal with a lot of private a/c throughout the year and its no doubt a well known procedure.

Try calling Benson's flying club, perhaps? From memory one of the key people in the club has a daytime role in flight safety.

Er, does that mean that as a TA reservist I can ask Lizzie to hangar my aircraft FOC ?? Do I have to be based at the particular MoD establishment for this to apply?
That cuts right into the overheads for buying a second hand airframe. Mind you, I have wondered about the civ a/c hangared at Church Fenton, Linton, Netheravon etc. I assumed it was a privilege of rank, or some such thing.
I presume your own insurance has to cover life's (aka VT Aerospace's) little knocks.

ISTR that the QR applies to RAF Officers, though it's a few years since I had hold of QRs!
I also recall afew years ago that the Stn Cdr of a Northumberland Unit where only helos normally land had his own ac (Tiger Moth?). He obtained use of (bought?) the farmer's field next to the hangar and arranged access through the perimeter for himself. I believe he stored his ac in the hangar, but I will stand to be corrected.

Ecce Homo! Loquitur...
"Sticky" Bostock, Hornet Moth to be precise. Got farmer´s permission to use the field and had a section of the fence onto the old wartime airfield/runway made removable. Not sure how happy OC GD was when the found the CO liked to fly up to inspect the T91 rather than go in the staff car though. Folding wings allowed it to fit in the hangar with the Sea Kings. They weren´t particularily happy about it as I recall, but he had the Stn Cdr´s approval....

Beekeeper,
For non MOD A/C, you can uplift fuel at a cost of current rate + 5% tax if qty <2300ltr and destination is within UK, or, 17.5% tax if Qty is >2300ltr and again destination is within UK. If destination is O/S UK the tax rate is 0%. Obviously the basic cost changes constantly, so please feel free to call BZN, F&L and speak to a friendly stacker, or you can pm me and I will give you more details. (These are current rates from DTMA, DFG)
Of course you will still be subject to landing fees etc (you will need to contact ops for fees).

There is a JSP(365?) that covers the whole thing. I think you'll find that there are insurance, and proof thereof, issues as well as fees for parking, hangarage, landing and so on. There are also rules/restrictions on the rendering of services/maintainence and the use of fuels, oils, etc.

I did something akin to this about 5 years ago at Middle Wallop. Granted, I was based there at the time, but all I had to do was get permission from the CO and Airfield Manager and ensure that the A/C had the required insurance. I used the local flying club's fuel (which was about 10p per litre cheaper than civvy airfields) and there were no landing fees.
At the time, you could also set up what amounts to an account with the MOD where you have a set number of airfields around the country that you could draw fuel from. All in all, a complete winner.
As I said above, this was about 5 years ago, but the perk was definately worth the considerable amount of paperwork and phone calls that it took to set it up. From memory, it was an individual at Strike who administered the process for all Mil airfields and for all 3 Services.
