At BA you get no housing. In your pocket is say £4-£5k a month in first few years. Out of that you have to pay rent/mortgage/childcare etc. Ok UK you get free schooling, however, that’s 8.30-3.30. Have to pay after school fees if both parents working. That’s around £1k a month.

Im not pro pro EK just balancing it up.

Yea I have seen the figures in Dubai. Have you seen the rents London/SE England? To get good schools you have to live close to said schools. Even 1 hr drive out from LHR you looking at around £1 mill for a nice place close to catchment for schools. Or you go private and pay £25k plus a year. I know this because it’s the daily chats I have at pick up time and been looking to move for 3 years. Good schools expensive houses. Cheaper house pay private schooling.

I said before social security isn’t quite the same in UK as other EU. It’s there but my mum is struggling. Shes elderly disabled and the help she is getting isn’t enough. Why? She has savings. She’s been told if she gets rid of her money she will get more help from government. Not much but an extra £200 a month to pay electric and gas.

Yes EK you get no help but if you seriously crunch numbers and go worst case on everything financially EK is better, unless you rent in UK. If you rent and lose a job with a family the government will pick up the tab. If you have a mortgage they don’t as you have assets. Thats how it works.

This is based on 2 people working. Living in UK you need 2 incomes to get a good mortgage.

A million plus for a good house? BS I live under 40 minutes to LHR and paid half of that for a house and in a great catchment area for schools. So that is utter tripe!

And you've factored in the cost of childcare in Dubai? Or a maid? Or do kids not need care after school in the UAE?

Perhaps your problem is you want a champagne lifestyle on a beer can salary.

Try going long term sick in EK and see what happens when that caring company turfs you out after a year or uses your sickness as a justification to make you redundant in the next downturn.

I've gotta go tell me FO friends at EK its all ok, as some stranger on the internet who's never done the job or lived there has said he's crunched the numbers and it's all ok and that they aren't struggling.

Ok think what you like but we have looked from loads of places around Kent to St Albans and haven’t found anywhere for much under £1 mil with good schools and links to the city (under 1 hr) for my Mrs to get to work.
Schools would have to be walking distance as Mrs doesn’t drive.

Yes we are probably a bit more restricted but as she’s the bread winner her job is slightly more important.

To add yes my Mrs would be working in UAE.

Then you haven't been looking hard.

Perhaps try looking out west. 22 mins to London on the train from a very large town right on the M4. And yes 2 primary schools and a college all within a 15 minute walk. You literally pick the some of most expensive places in the SE and complain you can't afford them, yet strangely friends of mine have bought in those places you mention and certainly didn't pay the prices you're talking about.

And yes my wife worked in the ME as well. Without that second income when I was an FO things were tight even more so if you have kids.

I notice you keep moving the goal posts when challenged on comparing like for like and change the narrative to suit your very narrow view of making out that the UK is bad and that the UAE is great.

Look if you want to go the ME that's fine but please stop trying to convince the rest of us it's so great (or are you secretly trying to convince yourself?) as surely given how long you've posted on here about EK you'd have the hours by now?

I try not say too much as I feel slightly uncomfortable giving the full details of my situation over an open forum.

If it’s the town we are thinking of it wasn’t ideal/ we didn’t like it. Can’t help the way we feel about a place. Cross rail is a massive bonus yes and hopefully bring the time down to under an hour to the city/CW area.

Just our criteria plus what we like areas that are affordable we would be unhappy. Everyone has limits/compromises. What you are happy with wouldn’t be happy for us. Ok it’s all IMO but when I compare I compare city to city. If you start comparing living in say Farnham for example it’s a bit of piste as we love a city vibe. It’s a small town compared to Dubai like wise the town you maybe mentioning isn’t true comparison to city living. Surely should you not compare living in centralish London to Dubai? City to City?
That’s my view.

Again changing the goal posts. Crossrail is an option but direct to North side of London in 22 or south of the Thames in 45. And no not the town you're talking about but not a million miles away. But like I said you're not really trying, you're using it as an excuse to suit the narrative.

You are the ones not comparing like for like. You mention city living then say you don't want a village atmosphere but say you looked at St. Albans. Thats the definition of a (large) village and certainly not the city living you supposedly aspire to.

Like I said who are you trying to convince us or you?

Yes exactly. We looked at village life and it wasn’t for us. I was given that information to the discussion as an option for those interested in that. Your information is good also and should be taken on board by anyone considering coming back. Sorry if I come over as attacking.
I believe it’s ideal you giving this information and hopefully those wanting move can consider it and saves them time looking to move back.

My comparison is for those moving from London to Dubai others in a similar situation. Yes sure Dubai is expensive compared to outside London but again that’s not a city comparison. Housing costs there is not as big a gap between London and Dubai. If someone said they spend £2k a month for a 2 bed flat in zone 4 of London that’s not bad. My mate rents his 1 bed out for £2500 that’s in zone 2. That’s the going rate of a city.

AIMINGHIGH123

I just can't believe that you are still renting a property in the UK, as you have previously stated you have 'been in the game a while' and your Mrs has a rockstar salary. Strange that you never bought a property given that they have doubled in value in the last ten years. Not as smart as you think you are it seems.

No wonder you are moving to the UAE if you are 40 and still renting! on the 777... good luck with that!

You will be telling us you are buying a house in JVC soon. All the best mate, hope you can make your situation work before you finish, I genuinely mean that.

No need for your post Why are you being so condescending?
No you misread. I’m not renting. We would rent our place out for that, half of that would be income after mortgage covered. Hardly rockstar. She’s a city worker. Not high high flyer but yeah more than most pilot salaries. You sound jealous so are attacking me personally which is just uncalled for. We actually live fairly modestly. Drive around in a 15 year old banger, no interest in expensive clothes but yes we would happily go and spend to go to a nice restaurant. That’s just us.

Other peoples financial success get to you?

When people say Dubai is expensive the first thing I ask is compared to where? If comparing to outside a city then yes. Have to compare like for like.

Another way to look at it is take out the tax you pay in the UK. So a BA FO is what £90k a year at best which is £7500 a month. That would be before tax to similar to Dubai.
Im just stating it how an accountant put it over to me.

As this appears to be going no where with derogatory comments let’s move back to working conditions at EK.

It does seem strange to be commenting on your financial success built in the UK but by the same token complaining about how bad things are in the UK. The irony.

You also believe that you can’t claim any social security in the UK unless you don’t own a property which is complete rubbish. You can claim if you own a property as long as you have less than 16,000£ in savings which seems sensible so “stop spreading rumours”

Again another aggressive comment.
I didn’t mention the £16k recently however I have previously. £16k yes exactly. It’s a decreasing scale based on how much you have saved up to the £16k. People saving for houses etc would have more than that. 10-20% deposit to get on the ladder. £16k is not a lot if you think like that.

You and I forgot to add partners salary as well. This isn’t about who is right but what is right.

It’s like speaking with children.

you really are just going around in circles .

You have been corrected that you can claim social security with a mortgage but are now saying that if you are saving for a house , you’d have to use the 16,000 pounds savings before getting benefits which would mean the safety net won’t protect your savings towards a property ,yet at the same time you state you aren’t saving for a house and have bought . Ha forget it! move to Dubai buy out in desert and invest everything in a wealth fund out here . It will be a good retirement habibi, house in Knightsbridge habibi !!

partner or wife ? There’s a big difference in the UAE.

Dude it was an example. Read what I have put.

Yes we have a property and more than £16k in savings. I’m sorry I was brought up to have at least 6 months worth of mortgage payments saved up in case the unexpected happened.
And yes because of this we didn’t receive any extra help. We still had to pay £2500 childcare costs mortgage etc. When you pay so much tax it would be nice to receive a little more help from the government when you pay a lot in tax every month.

Like I said Dubai is far from perfect. Where is?

We love the city and have a lot of friends there. I have said that many many times. I have also had friends leave Dubai within 6 months as they hated it. They hadn’t lived in a city before and moved to Dubai. Big big step from the small town they came from.

reading your post about renting out your UK apparent and making some income with it, and further moving to Dxb making the big bugs there, while your wife is giving up an excellent paying job you are missing one point:

i guess if you are registered in the uk renting out your making a taxable income, and for my knowledge if you are a tax payer in Europe you must register all of the incomes you have. Therefore legally you are required also to mention your Dxb income on the uk tax forms.
doing not so is technically in most European countries tax fraud and comes with fine.
therefore your whole calculation would become obsolete.

McToryMug 24th Aug 2022 09:24

I have no doubt that he probably believes that his UK rental income would be exempt as a non resident, doesn't really understand the split tax year or temp non res etc .Let these people suffer, they know it all.

kwaiyai 24th Aug 2022 09:34

If you own a property in UK and rent it out whilst working or living in another country you have to declare on annual tax return in UK. Does not matter
how long you are not in UK either.

AIMINGHIGH123 24th Aug 2022 09:51

All I’m going to say is I trust my accountant.

When everybody got dumped and had to move home, my accountant didn't have a Scooby and I required a UK tax specialist. Good luck AIMING.

This. All U.K. sourced income must be declared. End of.

I personally know 2 expat pilots who were ruined in the ramifications of not disclosing U.K. rental income. The IR came down like a tonne of bricks.

Some UK source income is classed as 'disregarded' with special rules, (some pensions ,savings that kind of thing I believe) I am no expert, it seems very complicated. We all need putting in contact with AIMINGHIGH123's accountant!
