Wet Vee Two,

I hear what you are saying about depreciating assets...etc. Thats the way life goes in the UAE. We needed an SUV whether we liked it or not, 3/4 of my annual salary vs the value of my family's life and I got the one with the most air bags and reinforced sides. Have you been on Emirates Road and Shiekh Zayed Road?

We could go on and on about maid or no maid. I went without one for many years but thats the cost of having one in Dubai. Please do not get personal with me or involve my wife in this topic.

Someone asked for the cost of living in Dubai and I spent some time researching and posted it, now leave the thread creep aside and stay on topic and help the guys out.

New Joiners

Guys,

Please take this job when offered. We are so understaffed and I need some days off.

My fellow pprune posters have got you so scared, it's having a negative effect on recruiting. If you won't come here, then how can I take my leave or attend an upgrade course.

Many new aircraft are on the way and we need a few hundred pilots, why not do both of us a favor and be one of them.

Appreciate your job, I see you research some info, no doubts about it when you take a look at the post; once again, Thanks.

If you take this job for the current offerings, don't complain later. If you get fired for making a wrong turn in training, don't complain. If you still don't get your leave, because they haven't hired enough, don't complain. If you still don't get your command because they hire DEC's, don't complain.

Don't you understand? It is never getting better, unless they have to seriously increase T&C's to attract to people to STAY, and at the same time attract people to COME.

If you’re tired, call in SKF. Protect yourself.

Hi guys, it seems that EK is not a wise choice if you have already a job somewhere else in the world where you enjoy freedom and lifestyle. But what if you are already here, living in Dubai flying for a low cost? Is it worse than having the same 100h a month and 900 a year, flying 2 to 3 nights in a row with around 15 trips a month? And yes, I drive there myself on my car doing around 100km each day I go to work. Money wise seems to be better but then you have to pay for everything, housing and DEWA included.
My question is: Is it worth the move to EK if you are already stuck here in the sandpit? I see couple advantages like ID tickets and so plus most of the disadvantages are already here. So any thoughts on that?

mensaboy 3rd Mar 2010 15:55

If you don't already know about the latest debacle at EK then read on. The following example should adequately explain how Emirates views its employees. (just one example of many during my time at EK).
One of our CC went to the medical clinic complaining of abdominal pains. Apparently tests were taken and somehow the results were misplaced (rumor about the lost results) but anyhow, she was released to continue to work. (basically you have to be dead or have your physical appearance objectionable to get some sick days as a CC)

On her subsequent pairing she fell ill in her hotel room and gave birth to a premature baby. Hotel staff, medical staff and everyone else involved in this event were by all accounts fantastic.

Unfortunately, she has NOW been left on her own because EK has absolved themselves of all responsibility.

SO........a new and surprised mother with a premature baby in a foreign country and the company has already declared they will not cover any costs, let alone a continued stay in the crew hotel. She was fired of course, left to her own devices with her premature baby, while on a layover working for Emirates Airline.

Yeah, she violated the ridiculous pre-marital sex laws in this country and yes she probably should have known she was pregnant...... but ****E happens! It happens to locals too but I'm pretty certain that is taken care of in a manner that is not detrimental to mother or child.

For a company to use excuses to wash their hands of this woman is despicable. So if you think that coming to EK is a wise move, consider the fact that this company views pilots in the same light as Cabin Crew.

We are employed to work for the company, completely abide by the rules (no matter if they are insane and changed on a weekly basis), never ever get in ANY kind of trouble, consider our days off as a 'gift' on the part of EK (quote AAR) and basically be treated like children...... then Dubai SHOULD be your new home!

I guarantee though, the first time YOU offend someone of stature, or in any way get caught disparaging this comedy show, you will change your tune.

I am sure that 10% of the pilot population will side with the company on this one and to those individuals.... you deserve a sad fate. Think long and hard before you defend the company's position on this one!

Is this not the year 2010?

ps. this is based on a forwarded email of a newspaper article and 2 accounts from CC friends (one of whom says she knows the girl but has not spoken to her yet) and also based on the fact that a Fund has been set up to help out this woman. Hopefully these events have been exaggerated, but I doubt it.

Old pool holders.... New interview

Hi folks,

Some of the old "polies", interviewed during 2008 and being in the hold pool until the application approval expiration has been called for a new interview? If yes, someone knows if they plan a full assessment for them? Or might be posible an special one (I mean shorter) for whom was already successfull with EK? Appreciate any comment around it!!! Thanks

skybitch747 14th Mar 2010 23:33

when hired, always take your decision to join if you know where the exit door is and that you can easily take it. Nothing worse than having to bitch, regret things and being stuck in.

for those going to the selection program, RELAX!!!!! be yourself and have fun doing it.

SkyScanner 18th Mar 2010 00:13

I have done a search but come up negative.

Does anybody know if recruitment has a direct number or email address separate to the generic application one?

Thanks in advance

Lionfish 18th Mar 2010 18:45

OK, I have the Emirates Interview Book, and I have downloaded some company info off the tinternet so I will just suck it and see. I have absolutely no chance with the technical exam but will go for C or the longest answer!

I have to ask though, I am a Skipper in a UK LOWCO and am thinking of coming out. There is a lot of negativity on the forum but it could be by a small vocal minority. Is there real problems in EK and should I go to Etihad instead?

Please can someone please tell me in relation to Sterling what the monthly take home is after sector pay and allowances. That would help me compare apples with pears at least!

CAVnotOK 18th Mar 2010 18:54

People are just pulling your leg. It's actually totally awesome working for EK.
Come on over....... best thing you could ever do for your career.

Give me a f***'n break. It might even be worse than what you read here.

Cav.

Hello All

What's the difference with these two...are they the same...

1.• Hourly Flying Pay
An Hourly Flying pay is paid on block hours up to a threshold of between 83 to 92 hours.

2.Productivity Pay
Productivity Pay is also available for block hours worked above the monthly Hourly Flying Pay threshold of between 83 to 92 hours.

and what are the rates. Thanks.

Cenrifugel 23rd Mar 2010 18:05

I know I’m taking a big risk by asking this, possibly being blown out of the sky by everyone who sounds very negative about joining Emirates at the moment. However for the average South African white male pilot, facing reverse apartheid, and actively being discriminated on by the local flag carrier, the only other possible way to fly heavy jets is at Emirates. The current political situation in our country also leaves Dubai as a very attractive, safe option in which to raise a family away from the politics we face at home. Now back to my question, what are the realistic requirements? I am aware of the requirements posted on the recruitment page; however only about 1000hrs of my medium jet time is above 55 tons, with 1300hrs above 40 tons. I have the required 4000hrs total time; my application status is currently under review. What are my realistic chances of being offered an interview? Any positive input will be greatly appreciated.:ok:

CAVnotOK 23rd Mar 2010 18:21

Your chances should be very good, they are desperate.

Your reasons to come here are very valid. However, having said that, there are many guys from SA who regret the move to EK.

Good luck, and keep your eyes open.

CAV.

Emirates Interview

I have an interview with Emirates in April. Has anyone been through it lately who can shed some light on the process?

Tamagotchipilot 25th Mar 2010 21:36

Hi, can I ask you when have they called you for the interview?
I have applied 5 days ago.
Thank you so much

Is the application process still on? if so when is the deadline?

Minimum time from A330 to A380 FO Seat?

Mate of mine just lost his job on the A320/A319. Understanding that EK is a horrible place to work according to everyone on this board, if one were to get hired onto the A330, what is the earliest chance in years for advancement to the right seat of the A380? Two years? Three years? I understand something like 8-9 A380s will be added in 2010 and a similar delivery rate thereafter.

Thank you for any serious responses.

Interview Offer in April

Hello all.

I have been watching this thread for about 6 month, and I have read all 99 pages of it.

I was short listed back in the summer of 09, and then asked last month to update my application.

I did that, and I received an offer to interview about 3 weeks later.

EK is going to fly me from ANY EK city to Dubai for the interview roundtrip, so at least that part is looking better, and shows what the urgency level has become by EK recruiting.

Any real info on the interview process would be appreciated.

Please, I have already read the 4,798 DONT COME HERE POSTs.

I, along with every other potential new hire, would like to have some real honest info and answers.

Thanks in advance.

Fellowship of the drink 26th Mar 2010 22:08

Seriously, dont come here.

You'll be selling your health for a few meare dirhams. . We are still here because It was never this bad before and we tolerated it because of other positive aspects of this job. We are now stuck here and some of us here have too much to lose to uproot our families and start over somewhere else. You have a chance of not making the same mistake.

I have an entire month of back of the body clock flying, coupled with annexe 1 duty extentions with the minimum days off. Its not hard to see how your health and your ability to operate safely will diminish over a short period of time.

EK is not interested in your well being, please read the recent EK management banning of all community activities in DSO. Kids drama, ballet and adult cardio and other positive family programs will no longer be allowed to run in an Emirates compound, even if they are exclusively of residents only. Pilots health, who cares about pilots? EK certainly doesnt... let alone keeping your family sane and happy

EFC 3 DAYS 27th Mar 2010 05:55

Oh for the love of Jumbaliahs beard
Jetsnrovers has read almost 5000 posts advising him not to go to Emirates, yet he thinks that it will either be different for him or else he is currently employed as a ditch digger in someplace ridicously hot and needs to change careers for the better!!!
There are so many people advising against going to that outfit and yet he seems to be falling over himself wanting to fly the big shiney jet.
Fact being that once you have settled into Dubai and gone through all the BS, talked your wife off the balconey of Burj Khalifa for the umpteenth time, bitten your tongue to a stub trying not to tell the local in his blackened out (illegal unless you are an Emirati) windowed SUV which cut you off doing 180KMS to slow down, and after you have finished your training after being told "theres your books, go study", stared in disbelief at the laws and rules of that SH!THOLE (and I mean Dubai as well as EK in this statement) and then after all that you climb into the seat of a B777 or A330 and ask yourself "Is this big plane worth all the BS in my life?" I bet you that your answer will be "NO".
You will make a huge mistake going there and not just professionally...... But what do the guys who take the time to post here know????? Head on down there and see for yourself.

EK interview

Hi guys,

I have an interview with Ek next month, after 2 years finally they called me, what I don't understand is how is posible that people keep resingning all the time, and you don't see that in other mayor ailines.
Why is that??? What makes people leave...????

Iver 28th Mar 2010 02:18

EFC 3 Days,

Nice victim mentality mate. You don't control your own life. You are a victim. Perhaps you should make haste and leave the desert before your head implodes.

TangoUniform 28th Mar 2010 07:22

Expectations

Before accepting employment here, ask yourself, what are my expectations working for EK. So let's look at some of the expectations you may have.

Job Security: This airline is not going anywhere for the forseeable future so in that respect you will have job security. However, as an individual your job security rests with others. IOW, don't in anyway screwup during training, on the roads, or in your life in general in Dubai. Ref., the new pilot under training in MAN (find the threads on that)

Family Life: Accommodations will be provided, some better than others. But if your expectation is to have a normal family life, how will you be able to flying 90 plus hours a month, and with sometimes no more than eight days off a month? But those eight days will be spread throughout the month, so don't have expectations of being home for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc.

Upgrade: If you have expectations of a fast upgrade, they won't be met. Maybe four years ago a three year upgrade was possible, think minimum of 5-6 years. Instructions say need 3000 hours in an EK aircraft and at least 4000 hours in 55 tonne aircraft.

Management: EK is running their flight operations very similar to the low cost carrier model. Never mind that most low cost are also medium to short haul, not ultra long haul. Fatigue, is a reality, not a myth here. So your expectation of a Flight Operations Department being run as a "legacy" long haul operation will not be realized. Expectations of being held in respect as a professional by flight ops will not be met. Their approach is that you are minimally qualified to fly THEIR aircraft and they treat you as such.

Dubai: Expectations of living in a cosmopolitan "modern" city will be met, if you define "modern" as wonderful new high rises and lovely flowers along the streets. But look past the facade, and look hard during one's interview. Think guilty until proven innocent if an "event" happens. You are a necessary "evil" in their country and will be treated as such.

So, if you have expectations of living what might be described as a normal life, you won't find that here as a pilot, at the present time. If you have expectations that the contract you sign will be upheld and honored, you will be disappointed in the future. If you have expectations of your family enjoying life here, compare that from where you came. If you have expectations of doing some traveling with your family to some interesting destinations, don't count on days off to enjoy, maybe during leave. If you have expectations of saving some money, you will be disappointed if you have children to educate here.

Why do pilots stay you may ask? What's the alternative for most? Maybe that's the same for you when you consider employment here. But if your family is safe where you live and you are employed, take a very hard and close look past the glitter of the big jets, big buildings and big PR.

In closing, examine YOUR expectations of working here, take heed of what has been said on these blog boards, and good luck with your decision.

777 fleet understaffed?????

Heard from a mate who was interviewed a few weeks back that there were a few Airbus-rated/experienced pilots in his group who were being told they would probably get the 777 fleet if hired - regardless of the fact that they only had A320 time.

Is the 777 fleet so under-staffed that previous type experience does not matter? Just curious.

lcristler 5th Apr 2010 20:09

Interview and A/C

I currently fly the airbus and during my interview last month I wasnt asked what airplane I would prefer. I did get the Airbus and ground school starts for me in July. No one else in my group of 6 got hired.

Iver 5th Apr 2010 22:16

lcristler,

Thanks for that information. Did you also get the 777 sim during the interview process? Is the 777 sim standard for all interviewees? Also, at what point did you learn about your fleet selection (i.e., when offered a position or later)?

bhanab 6th Apr 2010 05:58

interviw with emirates

I am also being invited for the interview with EK. Can anyone help in telling me what all they ask and speak about. Whats the physometry test all about. Any information will be highly appreciated

lcristler 6th Apr 2010 15:46

Sim

I did my sim in the 777 and from what I hear thats all they are using..When I received the email about 3 weeks after my interview with the job offer I was scheduled for Airbus Ground school.

johnrico 6th Apr 2010 16:06

lcrister, which Airbus are you assg. to?

Kapitanleutnant 6th Apr 2010 16:21

You poor guys....

I'm really sorry to say you have absolutely NO IDEA what you are about to get yourselves into at EK.

Make no mistake about it.... you will come back to this forum someday after or even during training and understand just some of the things you've read here on Pprune and been warned of.

I came here for the much touted upgrade and it just seems we all have been continuously beat up my a management that sees no problems with flying us 94 hours per month thru all differing time zones, no support whatsover, a seemingly constant battle just to get some semblance of justice when you have been blatently wronged by either the system or crew sched. Things that you used to not worry about so much with regards to family issues and getting time off to take care of them will all the sudden become a fight with a duty manager or higher to get that time to take care of things.

Unless you are essentially going to starve yourself or your family if you don't take this job, run away from it and run fast.

If the world economy was more healthy and other airlines were hiring, I believe it safe to say that almost 80% of the pilots at EK would be gone or getting ready to leave. This very statement was met with a standing ovation at a large TRI/TRE meeting a month or two ago.

K

@ lcristler,

When did you do your interview? ...and more importantly did you accept the job?

Would you mind giving a brief run down of what the 4 days consisted of? I know it was 3 days in the past. Do you have any idea if and what they have changed from the past?

Any idea if your accomodation has been allocated yet? and if so which area in Dubai?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I guess the rumors are true then... a couple of guys are gone to Vietnam looking into the eastern horizons, friendly faces and greener grass (as always)

Any sugestions on who to contact if I wanna follow the way into Vietnam?

Emirates

Hi guys I just wanted to find out if anyone can tell me if emirates requests to see a high school diploma at the interview. as EMBARASSING as this is, I never did maths at school and wanted to know if they will see that and cast me aside. Any insight from people who have been through the process will be appreciated.

Wizofoz 7th Apr 2010 13:36

Not aware of there being any particular educational requirement. If it's not mentioned in the recruitment literature, I don't think it will be a problem.
