(Ironically, this guy lost everything to Bernie Madoff the same time his book came out.)

....Doesn't exactley speak volumes for his authority on his subject matter, does it?

MosEisley 14th May 2010 13:27

Obviously not but I still think the title gets the message across and I do love some god irony.

hi

According to another pilot, the quiz has been significantly changed and it is not from Ace the tech pilot interview book.

He did mention reading: understanding performance by AJ walters.

Does anyone have a copy or know where i can find this book in US or canada or uk?

If anyone has gone thru recent interview, you could please share your experience on quiz, interview and sim?

Also, could someone point to me in the right direction in finding weather reports in metric system, eg TAF, Metars, RVR , decoding , as am i not used to metric system.

thanks

thanks

Jupiter5 15th May 2010 05:54

There are only 30 easy multiple choice questions based on basic ATPL. All current jet drivers should know answers. There is no need to go and spend weeks reading various books.
Aptitude tests include around 6 modules and you can not prepare for it. It tests your cognitive skills, reaction time, coordination, reasoning, math and so on.
Group excercises are easy - evaluate the ability to work as a member of an efficient team.
Around 55% of candidates fail the sim check and at the end another 20% fail the psych evaluation. Most of the psych questions are pathetic and irrelevant but your answer does count. Let's say that a candidate is single and his/her parents are dead. Sample question: Do you hate your mother or do you argue with your wife? I think that one company in Australia (maybe VOZ) started using similar psych tests untill they realised that some of the best drivers in the industry were turned away as psych. unfit.

cl65 15th May 2010 06:09

thanks jupiter

May i ask when you went thru interview?

did you study by using ace the pilot interview or anyother books?

any weather questions? metar and taf reading and decoding?

Any math questions for quiz?

were the quiz answers close to each other and was it difficult to guess?

How was your interview overall?

so basically if you finish one phase, you get to go for the next phase?

How soon will they tell you that you passed and have been selected?

thanks again.

cl65 15th May 2010 06:14

hi

You mentioned that the quiz was simple and it was out ATPL.

Was that FAA ATPL OR JAA? Did you study from JAA ?

i do not have access to jaa atpl questions.

jetdriven 15th May 2010 09:17

Hey Jupiter, do you mean 55% of those who fail, fail on the sim, or did you really mean that more than half of all those who attend the selection actually fail the sim?

atpcliff 16th May 2010 19:12

Hi!

Are you sure about that? So having about 3100 TT and 2900 on A330 (1100 h and current), B737 (1600h) and A320 (about 200h) I should be above that requirement... is it correct?
Thanks again
I'm 99% sure the above means they've lowered the minimums again. It was 4000 TT, and guys were less were having their applications immediately rejected. Yours was not, obviously.

Also, I was at the KLAS (Las Vegas) job fair a couple of weeks ago, and the EK reps told me the mins were lowered again to 2000 hours on aircraft over 10 tonnes. It was 55 tonnes required, when hiring started, in Sep???. Then it was lowered to 55 tonnes recommended (Dec?). Then for the YYZ job fair it was lowered to 2000 over 20/25 tonnes, and just before the LAS job fair to 10 tonnes.

I believe EK will have to keep lowering their mins and/or hiring DECs, UNLESS they improve the T&Cs for the current pilot roster. I would NOT want to be an EK recruiter now, and it will only get worse for them, for the foreseeable future, unless they fix the T&Cs.

Stay in Dubai for life?

Got a phone call to interview for F/O position soon.
But... Just wondering. Are you expected to live in Dubai for the remainder of your career with Emirates? Do they even allow any commuting to DBX at all?? Maybe after a few years on the line? or NOOO?? :=

Orangewing 17th May 2010 16:04

Mate, forget about commuting - period. Just forget it, no matter how long you have been at emirates. Especially to Baltimore! (lovely city, by the way) :E

Snake man 17th May 2010 17:39

Of course you can commute..........! From Sharjah! And provided you complete the compulsory off-base notification first. Easy! :bored:

Wacked 17th May 2010 20:06

Are they offering about fast track commands to more experienced guys? I have about 9000 hours all on medium jets and i don't really want to spend 3-5 years in the right seat with emirates. I wouldn't want a DEC either. I know they used to do a fast track deal. Did that work in practice and is it on offer now?

six7driver 17th May 2010 20:54

Wacked...sorry to disappoint you friend, but no fast track commands, and worse is that there are loads of guys with your type of experience that have been waiting now for more than 4 years to get a command. Right now as things stand FORGET 3-5 years, you are dreaming, as an FO try 5-7 AT LEAST, and this little gem of a job will include a 90 hour month :uhoh:, with health consequences from flying at least half of that time on the back of the clock through up to 12 time zones in a week , on pay that isn't enough to save even a penny if you have kids, bonus included!!!.

only telling the truth

regards,
six

Wacked 17th May 2010 21:23

Thanks for your reply six, and I take you at your word. But the whole thing doesn't seem to add up. If Emitares are really looking to expand by the amount they say and so many are leaving, I guess the guys will get their chance soon.

Another quick question. If everyone is doing 90 hours a month and everyone can only do 900 in a year, what will they do when everyone runs out of hours?. I remember Ryanair reached this crisis in about 2003. Lots of people got a month or 2 off, and they had to hire in wet leases to keep the place going. Is that really an option in Emirates?

kennedy 18th May 2010 03:31

Wacked,

one way EK get round this is too factor your augmented flights, and we have quite a few of them.

Eg. A augmenting FO sits in the seat for 6 hours on this 10+ hr flight, that's all that is counted towards his 900 hrs.

A capt does a 34 hr Lax return, he logs 27 hrs in his 900, as he augments one way.

We have muliple examples, and don't expect days off for months in excess of 900, you will be given ground duties, sim support, office days, etc or like a friend of mine allocated leave to eat up the leave the company hasn't allocated already( with 2 weeks notice not much he can do as his other half can't get off)

As it has been mentioned before, although EK has a fatigue monitoring program, I've never seen any improvements to fatigue levels in EK

As we say Keep recovering!

DMN 18th May 2010 07:05

Just curious, what do you do for ground or office duty?

Scanwing 18th May 2010 21:40

Hi guys,

Having recently been down to DXB for the interview and being offered a job I´m still undecided.

One of the major concerns I/wife has is the accomodation. We were not too impressed by the Villas at Silicon Oasis as they are a little bit of nowhere.
Is it any chance to be put at Emirates Hills/Lakes/Springs/Meadows?
Is there anyone out here, current EK F/O that has taking the allowance and bought a own villa?
If so, how big mortage can you get and which interest rate could you expect? Also, is it a straightforward process to buy a property or is it a nightmare? Is the allowance enough?

Any information is higly appreciated.

Many thanks

cl65 19th May 2010 00:19

congrats on getting hired.

Hello. how are you doing?. Do you mind sharing your interview experience?

Did you find the 30 question quiz to be easy? & were they based on JAA questions?
What books did you use to study?

Does the interview last 4 days?

thanks and have a great day.

Nuuk 19th May 2010 04:36

Scanwing,

EK does not have any accommodation in the Lakes, Springs... Most likely you will end up in Silicon.

It is a buyers market for real estate and will become even more in the future I think. It is a f...g nigh mare to deal with the banks.
I don't think you will be able to buy anything until you produce 6 months of bank statements in the UAE.
The rates are between about 6.75 to around 9% depending on the bank and terms you are taking. You will have to pay about 20 000 Dhs in administration fees to set up your mortgage plus life insurance on the loan plus salary guarantee, plus sign your providend fund also as a guarantee. The whole mortgage process will take you 3 weeks to a month (except during Ramadan, longer). On top of the mortgage fees, add the real estate broker fees and the transfer fees from the developer (so add a few thousand Dhs more).

Second point in real estate here, you will have to write a bunch of Cheque in guarantee to the bank, a bounced Cheque in the U.A.E is a criminal offense that will give you a kind visit to the local jail, and that you will only be able to get out there by leaving your passport to the police, so in other words, if the sh...t hit the fan, you are stuck.

Third point, monthly installments. Add to your monthly mortgage DEWA and services fees, depending on the project you might be surprised on how much more a month comes out of your pocket.
I will not even talk about the registration of the property with the Dubai municipality, that's an other night mare.
I don't think F.O. allowance will cover mortgage and fees for a villa bought with a minimum cash down.
A big point to ponder is the upgrade time is now set at a minimum of 5 years, I would say more 7, so you can't count on a Captain's allowance for a while, witch makes the difference. I maintain my previous point, you need to be Captain to comfortably afford a villa, F.O. will be comfortable for a flat.

If you add it all up (mortgage, school fees, cost of living) it wont leave you much Swedish Krona to bring back home being a home owner in Dubai.

anilrawat 19th May 2010 05:14

hi cl65,

guess you should be appearing for the emirates interview soon. if you could throw some light on what books you using , will appreciate it. and when are you scheduled for the interview. i just submitted my application and got a response if my notice period can be of shorter duration than wat was mentioned in my application.

hope to hear from you soon. thanks a ton

anilrawat 19th May 2010 05:18

hi scanwing,

congrats on being hired. if you could kindly throw some light on the interview process and sim profile( having being there recently) will appreciate it. also if you can help in letting us know wat books to use for the preparation will be great!! thanks and all the best

BYMONEK 19th May 2010 05:31

Nuuk

I agree with all you points regarding what hassle it is for obtaining mortgages here in Dubai. The charges are ridiculous and the lack of 'service' even more so.

However, not sure about the info you had relating to the banks having a guarantee from the provident scheme. Have you had to do this, because I didn't? Not sure why they would ask to do this as the funds are set up in the form of a trust, registered in the Isle of Man. The A & B fund are set up in one, while the C fund is in another. Not even Emirates has access to this. There is no way, therefore, that the banks can insist you guarantee this money. Having said that, maybe it's a good thing. They obviously think they can, but you know better! ;)

dustyprops 19th May 2010 06:04

Hey Scanwing,

You will most definately end up in Cedre villas (basically Silicon), Silicon Oasis or Al Waha (out behind the ranches). We looked into buying our own place and even with the cheaper prices now, it's still ridiculously expensive and you will have to add your own money to the allowance as the allowance is only good if you are buying an apartment or sh!t villa.

Dubai is still bloody expensive whatever anyone tells you, and it's difficult to save much money as an F/O if you are here with wife and kids (i've got 1+2).

Think carefully mate.

Nuuk 19th May 2010 08:59

BYMONEK

Good for you if you didn't have to sign a bank guarantee letter from your employer, you had one less headache and few less visit to the HQ! This letter gives the bank the right, in the event of a default payer, to access money that you have within your employer, i.e. salary, providend fund. Once you have paid off your debt, you then ask for a clearance letter from the bank (it comes with a nice charge of 100 Dhs) to void this instruction to your employer. You then present it to HR who will in turn give you a letter that your are clear of a bank guarantee. You then put this precious letter in a nice safe place, you will need it once it's time for you to get out of the country:ooh:..... And don't forget to have it stamped! :ugh: Welcome to the year 1431!

Now A-B or C fund, my guess would be the A fund only, but then again, someone who will pull a runner will not be able to access his B fund I think, I can't give you a definite answer on that one, only because I don't know better:O

BigGeordie 19th May 2010 09:35

Nuuk, this must depend on the bank. I've taken out several mortgages in Dubai (not all at the same time!) and never been asked for any kind of letter like that. The only security they want is the property and security cheques for the amount of the mortgage.

apron 19th May 2010 12:10

Do EK have training fo's?? Are they full TRI's or just training department helpers?? Can fo's hold any other positions....ie is there career progression available before command comes along?
Cheers

dustyprops 19th May 2010 12:15

DubaiForever,

Don't waste your cash mate. It is a pretty straight forward assessment and it might be on an Airbus anyway. When I did mine (a while ago granted) Airbus guys were tested on Airbus and Boeing on Boeing. All the rest were on the A310.

pschweitz 22nd May 2010 01:50

Can F/O's with families make it easily financially?

I heard from a training captain that it might be hard for a F/O to make ends meet with a family to support and 1 child that goes to school...
That is WITHOUT a working wife...
Anybody know any more about this?
thanks!

SMOOTHFLIER 24th May 2010 22:59

Can ethiad or any of the other mid east airlines employ bankrupt pilots?
Are there any clauses in the contract to prevent employing bankrupt pilots
or could there be any problems with visas/immigration etc?

atpcliff 25th May 2010 21:33

Hi!

If you are at Delta Airlines, there are very few reasons why you would want to come to EK. From the UAE? Hate living in the US? HAVE to fly a widebody now?...maybe EK would be better.

I'm assuming an FO brings in between 7500 and 8000 USD each month. If you are in company housing, have 2 kids not in school yet, would it be safe to assume you could save at least 3000 of that per month. I have researched extensively on the cost of living in Dubai (right down to how much a razor costs) and we have friends living there that confirm those prices. I find it hard to believe that one can spend 7000 USD per month regardless of a family or not.

For those claiming that FOs with families cannot save any money, please explain where all the extra expenses are coming from.

Thanks.

Fred Garvin M.P. 28th May 2010 12:29

Trent, if you've done your research on how much a razor costs over here, then search the forum for what you are looking for in costs. There are several FO's that have posted on here what their cost of living is. Education (no rise in allowances again this year yet schools are still increasing), medical, buses, vehicles, insurance, outfitting the villa, tickets home, groceries, getting the wife out so she doesn't go mad, keeping kids entertained, and on and on and on. Yes, it is very difficult for a new hire FO to save cash for at least the first two years, sometimes three. Keep researching.

donpizmeov 28th May 2010 15:53

Trent if you know people over here ask them. Far better to rely on someone you know than an annon forum.
Without kids an FO will do ok. With kids, and particularly with kids at school you will not be saving much on an FO salary. This has been discussed a million times here, try the search function as I am sure it will show where the dollars disappear to.
Command will take some as there are 1100 other FOs in front of you to be upgraded. So even if the kids are not in school now, they will be prior to upgrade.

Good luck,

the Don

Bandit FO 28th May 2010 15:57

Trent,

You are correct, there is no excuse for these guys to be skint. My problem is that I spend all of my cash at Hooters, or the casino, or at the local strip club.

Come on over, you'll be able to save a pile 'o cash!

Get used to that feeling. You will get it over and over again, once hired.

Do you have a problem with your accomodation? With your bank account unjustly blocked? Have you been arrested due to a screw-up in any jingly office? Has your superior shafted you simply by insinuating something? Do you urgently need some days off because of a problem back home? Does your payslip show wrong?

Try calling for help ...... and you get the above. Get used to it quick.
