Thumbs down Hotel Fraud in Cairo

I cannot be the only one that has been scammed on a hotel in Cairo ….
For the past year, every time we go to Cairo, we stay in different hotels and every single time after a week or so of the stay, I get a call from my bank saying that they have discover some fraud in my credit card coming from Cairo, and that they will cancel it and give me a new one. The worst one just happened yesterday .
Not wanting to use the C.C., I used my ATM, (The machines were out of service), the guy tells me, sorry it is not working, you need to use your C.C. … reluctantly I did, and I just found out that they took the money from the account through the ATM card and they also charged my C.C. … what a bunch of crooks.
Don’t want to mention the Hotel name, but … will not Pass another night there …
Will take cash next time and avoid the head ache …
Anyone having the same problems ????

Funny But Sly!

Well that's the way it has been always in Cairo! You can enjoy the place and atmosphere so much. But you've got to be careful because it's not everybody's place. Just drop it from your list if you haven't watched Italiano tricks closely enough like those of Robert De Niro!

Credit Card Fraud

Thanks for this post, as it has answered my question i was asking myself for the past 8 months.

I too am a victim of this Cred Card Fraud issue. I now recalled visiting Cairo last year and checked in at Sheraton on the nile, here they insisted I provide a credit card, which I was not very happy about but was convinced/forced into, in order to be checked in. I used my company credit card in doing so.

Having spent 2 nights there, and returning back home to Europe, about 1 month later. I then got a call from the Bank to confirm my card details and my last place of travel. As i confirmed with them, they said that was used just 2 weeks ago in USA, and an amount of US$8,000 was spent. The bank then confirmed with me that my credit card number was actually copied and a copy/replica was made under a female name, in the States. The bank, thankfully, said they will cancell my card and investigate into the fraud as this was becoming a common practice when Credit Cards were used overseas. There is a scam running overseas where the scammers have discrete agreements with certain retail/hotel outlet employees and pay them to copy the credit card numbers and send overseas to the USA in some sort of way.

This is unbelievable, and thankyou once again, as you have, i believe cracked the case for me.

Guys be weary when abroad/downroute as it is a big proble with plastic cards. I was fortunate enough that the bank did not ask me to pay for the mis use.

Safe flying!!!

Cairo!

Sorry to say this, but I never met so many crooks, frauds, beggars, pranksters in my whole life. And i have been to many places. As much as I love the culture, museums of Cairo I am so disgusted with the people there. I left the place ripped of and severely sick from food poisining, probably another fraud.

And yes publish the name of the hotel so we all know to avoid this joint.

Hmm...the hotel in question wouldn't be the old 'El Salami' would it?

Anyway the whole place is as bent as a nine bob note. I remember getting taxis from the airport and agreeing the fare with the driver, only for him to increase the fare tenfold or so on arrival at my destination !

So what's new?

Been there and suffered the same fate. I go to Cairo almost every month and found a great way to prevent all this from happening.

We get the handling agent to make all the hotel reservations/transportation/transactions and pay them with their account or credit card, they then invoice us upon departure and we pay them cash as we leave from the aircraft impress. They love cash!.

I have yet to hear them ripping off their own folks but at least we are ok

We always stay at the JWM and have never had probs with the ATM there.

Cheers KW

Stayed at the Fairmont towers last year and no problems with ATM or CC but the first night when I ordered room service I signed the bill and 10 minutes later got a phone call from someone saying I need to pay cash for room service. I asked the person to come to the room for the cash and then called the duty manager and asked her about it. Needless to say no one came for the cash.

DBV-twice

This happened to me twice and both times in Dubrovnik in 2 different hotels. On both occasions my credit card was cloned and was used in Sydney AND each time the purchases were sets of expensive alloy wheels and other performance car parts!

Wouldn't take a genius to figure out that the local squid munchers have some mafia connections in Oz. Everafter I've used cash despite repeated requests to provide a credit card 'for security purposes'.

Yes thanks for the heads up there. Nothing surprises me, or will ever surprise me in Cairo, nothing.

I think we should name and shame, the hotels involved.

I have a company credit card. As they dont trust me with the pin number for me to draw cash at an ATM, I would be quite happy for them to get stung, to teach them a lesson. Which hotel please?

Credit card fraud

I also have been the victim of credit card fraud, about a year or so ago. Had my credit card 'cloned' and several transactions made on it. The incident was sorted out after some time but a great hassle! Since then I have always used cash, but I agree that some hotels require a swipe of a credit card on check-in. I now have what I believe the perfect answer, which has worked every time since. I have a 'pre-paid' Mastercard credit card with a few pounds on it, and use that every time I am asked for one at check-in. If they cloned that one, it wouldn't be much of a problem!!

Pre paid credit card

Rockamora

Several UK companies provide them, Virgin, Post Office, CashPlus to name just three.

Just Google 'prepaid credit cards', that should point you in the right direction.

Cheers

Not only Cairo

I live in KSA, and used my ATM card in KSA and DXB between June and December 2008, in December when I came back from leave, I noticed six transcactions in my account in Malaysian Ringits, called and stopped the card. By then they had 14 withdrawals in two days, as the bank limits max. per day. It took me three months to get my money back, and I had to submit my passport to prove I was not in Malaysia. They did not tell me where and when the card was copied, but on my visits, once I heard it was in Spetember in DXB, and this cell has copied a lot of cards in Dubai. on another visit, they said it is a particular ATM in RUH that was common on few complaints. Take care, it is tough to carry cash too.
