Etihad to Abuja/Lagos called off??

Anyone knows what happened to EY's planned triangular flight AUH-Lagos-Abuja-Abu Dhabi, planned previously for a Q1 2009 launch?

Maybe crew control had trouble finding drivers who would answer the call!

Thank you for expressing your sentiments. Obviously Lagos is paradise on earth. For one I am ecstatic that I don't have to fly there.

Thank goodness

LongJohn,

You got it right. You dont want us there. More importantly, who in their right mind wants to go to that crime ridden, drug infested sewer anyway??

Certainly not us.

So I guess we all win.

Given that Lagos was always a very profitable route for most airlines would it not be wise for EY to start picking routes where they can make some money?

or are you intending to be Alitalia in the desert?

LJT, what is your problem bros, in a few months or a year at most due to the current delays at Boeing and Airbus the new equipment ordered by wings of Nigeria will arrive.

The Plan I gather is to match every major route operated by these airlines and believe me it is going to happen Sir Johnson has always made his position clear about Nigerians having to deal with foreign carriers. Personally I do not have that problem cos I now route all my international travels via the UK, so I fly ARIK " I hear u do urself " he has also his thoughts on expatriate crews...and believe me u should hear the man, but that will talk about another time.

When u have expatriate crew writing things like who in their right mind wants to go to that crime ridden, drug infested sewer anyway?? and also I am ecstatic that I don't have to fly there, LTJ its been the case for ages here with a very few of these punters.

Take a look a few years back at some of my responses here on pprune, I predicted the current wave in Nigeria concerning the airline industrie and today we have about 200 and I think even more expats who have recently started work here in the country even some from XL I gather all earning a living and paying their bills at home and as much as they may not like it in Naija, well they have a job...! Just checkout the spanish girl in Arik on the B737 who would have believed eh.... even if she is just here to build time and go, the fact remains that she is here in Nigeria doing it...

Also no Major player in the aviation industrie in Nigeria today can afford to fail in its operations. You see the fact is like I did say a few years back, that, the playing field will not only be in Nigeria alone but when the growth starts, which it has, then it would have to cover the whole of west africa and the nations surrounding our country, we are the only ones with the finance and equipment and this we shall start to see in a few weeks to come.
The plain truth of the matter is, If the rest of our neighbours want to expand their economic growth then they need us to get them in the Air, and they are already on our neck.

The sky is the limit for Nigerian carriers if we do the right thing.

The current crisis in some of the major carriers we are experiencing right now will end, I feel it is due to inexperienced persons who have no business running the show, but would do us and their carriers better by putting their skills to good use in the cockpit rather than in this too rapid an expansion going on in our industry. We need good and sincere airline management people whether Expat or Naija I no care as far as we are the owners, then no shakkin.

What happened to Airways shall and will not repeat itself again, please gentlemen.

So as for me these days I just look out of my window in the airplane with a slight grin when I see all the happenings around our good old Lagos and most especially the new young entrants that have joined us like the one sitting next to me and say the old thing we all say.... e go better, this na just the begining...abi....

Safe flying guys and please behave in the Hold...

Thanks fg, but that doesn't state anything other than prevention is the best medicine.

An eye opener. Maybe we should have armed escorts in LHR or maybe all our european destinations. Cause as NIJASEA says. Prevention is best medicine. You just never know???????? NOT!!!!! Wake up mate and put away the pipe........

NIJASEA do you have an aspirine each day to prevent headaches???

Think not you only have it if you feel sick whch means you know a headache will pop up.

Same with guards nobody will put armoured guard if they are not needed??

have you seen andy crew in Italy France germany Uk or others places escorted with armoured vehichles ??

Armed escorts

Nijasea,

Does having rocks thrown in front of your a/c on the taxi-way, forcing you to stop, so they can loot the baggage hold, count. (First hand, as requested)

Thereafter an armed escort to and from the runway threshold!!

Sir Osis thanks that puts things in perspective I accept your point. Wasn't there a similar case somewhere in europe that an A/C was stopped while taxing and robbed (think in france?) does that make it unsafe there.
The armed escorts from my understanding are there due to the unstable nature of the Govt not due to crime. Nigeria has a high rate of military coups and having a police presence in the vehicle will assist the crew move through any roadblocks set up.
Guys why does the UAE insist on the Hep A shots. Why take anti malaria drugs prior to operating to the tropics not everyone gets malaria. Y use a condom on your girlfriend if you love her and she is on the pill...
Really there is not much any of us can do one way or the other where we fly to, it's up to the Airline if they say fly to lagos then unfortunately guys you must fly to lagos.. I am pretty sure most of you are not local pilots and that means you either can't get a job back home due to lack of opportunities or the pay is too low.
I really wish you guys all the best and for those who dont want to come to lagos i hope you get your wish.
fly safe.

I've got to say that the locals who are here watching over us expats get it. They don't live in a make believe world that everything is safe for us, and that the AK-47's are there for entertainment.

I have first hand knowledge of a local company driver who was knocked over the head on his way to work (I saw his bandaged head). I've also seen (from the van) people ganging up on somebody to beat the living sh*t out of him, and other crew members have witnessed at least one knife fight from the van during the time I've been here.

I personally have not been accosted; just the more garden variety rip-offs and thefts. I've been through the many impromtu road blocks to extort money. I had my ipod and various other things stolen out of my bag in my locked hotel room. BTW, I'm happy to report that my airline put pressure on the hotel to pay for my goods, which they recently did to the airline (which will hopefully get to me:-) Go read the NTSB report of the last crash in LOS. The plane was stripped clean of everything.

The carnage on the highways is disgusting. I've personally seen many okadas on the ground, and witnessed one driver hit a tree at perhaps 70mph. That was 2 seconds after trying to pass our van on the right, in the dirt. Naturally, basic safety precautions like seat belts were not used and he was ejected into the windshield while we watched. Puts a damper on the mood.

Crazy car driving and accidents can happen anywhere, what was more interesting about this crash is that nobody stopped to render aid, and our driver didn't even blink. No comment. No nothing. Just kept going. So did everybody else.

Occasionally, human dead bodies just pop up in ditches. You'd think they'd get picked up, but many times, they sit there and rot for a few days first. In a huge, major city. One such body was near one of our hotels within the past 2 months while I've been here.

Those are some of my experiences, mostly first hand, of my short tenure in Lagos, Nigeria. Like working anywhere, you adapt to the environment, and carry on.

Poor standards of driving in Nigeria made an issue on a forum about the Middle East ..................... you guys noticed the driving standards here in UAE? The car trying to get past you by pushing you off the highway at around 140kph; the zooming in and out of lanes at 140+ kph as they race each other in the latest top of the range model of car; the fatals here are every bit as spectacular as other parts of the world.

At least in Nigeria it is rare to have roads good enough to go fast!!

Some of the incidents quoted on here go back 20-30 years in time, well the first time the story was told goes back that far!! Of course things cannot possibly have changed in Nigeria cos that would mean people having to change their deep rooted attitudes.

The Sheraton Hotel, a western run chain of hotels last time I checked, rips the airlines and staff off with its charges and provides mediocre food in its restaurants. There is a nice Chinese restaurant next door to the Sheraton which I went to many times, plus a couple of good venues in Ikeja GRA which are better value for food. On Victoria Island there is a good choice of hotels and restaurants and security is better.

Crime happens everywhere. If I go onto BBC News website and click on the the UK news nearly every story is about rape, murder, robbery. Armed Police are regularly in the news for non terrorist reasons.

It isn't compulsory to have a bad time in Nigeria, you can have a good time if you want to.
