flying fijian and soresore, I'm perfectly safe for the time being and enjoying the USD turnaround. Things can only get better from now on. Thank you for the heads up.

Ali Baba - well done. Enjoy your puberty because it doesn't last long.

Now, if there any grown ups who can help with a reply to the question I asked earlier about schools I appreciate your views. I have Googled for info but would appreciate any informed opinions. Thanks in advance.

Donkey

Making derogatory comments about the local lads...something akin to driving ships of the desert I believe...wont win you friends. An apology would have been the right thing to do.

On a different note is it true that Oman Air offers furnished company housing in lieu of the housing allowance? Does anyone have knowledge of what this housing is like and is it better than getting your own housing?

Anyone live in the compound known as "THE WAVE." ? Are there similar compounds elsewhere?

Quite the contrary KATHEY, i joined up oman air in the last 12 months and have managed to find a villa which the company was quite happy to approve,as for the allowance capts get OR 4000,to spend as they wish for furniture as long as you provide receipts of the purchase, within 3 months. You can buy furniture and any other household needs from any place you wish.I must admit though certain members of the housing department are a bit hard to deal with, you just have to make sure that they dont push you around right from the start.

Thanks for the advice kathey,
but as far as i'm concerned the localisation of any airline should be the number one priority, and as an expat i'm only here for as long as they need me .Comming from an airline where i was on the other side of the fence i understand and am more than happy to live by those rules.
My freind as for your referance to it being a local VFR club, its a wonder you are no longer here.I have had the pleasure of flying with the locals here at Oman Air and they are a talented and profesional bunch of guys.
Anyway happy landings in HK,and be carefull they are localising there as well !

DP.

No 'locals' in HK ? Been a while , but my last trip there I remember almost being unable to walk on the pavements for Chinese nationals everywhere.
I reckon they mostly have proper jobs making more money .

Kotakota or anyone else in the know. Any idea how long it normally takes from the screening to get a contract in hand, assuming you pass? Assuming one has an interview in November 2008, when can one expect to be on the property?

Also does anyone know how many pilots are needed in 2009 and the number of class dates planned for 2009?

The course dates are the deciding factor .
Yr contract can be printed and approved pretty quick after the interview , but mine was sat on for a month until a course could be offered .
The actual contract is signed the day you arrive .
As for forthcoming course dates , the Boeing strike has certainly affected the course planning .Until it is resolved , and delivery dates confirmed for the 2 800s which are late , then no bets are being taken . I hear there are 2 very small courses planned for Jan and March , these can be ramped up of course .
The current 'winter' flying programme which started last week reflects the uncertainty over the deliveries . We expected some new routes to start , but only a rearrangement of some has happened so far .
Patience is paramount !!

Thanks for the information. I was told that one would have to take a psychometry test in AL Aein (spelling?) and also a medical upon arrival.
How indepth are any of these. I would hate to sign a contract, quit my current job only to be axed because of a psychometry test or medical issues. I have never taken a psychometry test to the best of my knowledge and my medicals have been uneventful thus far.

Don't know about the Psychometric business - it has only just been introduced !! I am amazed Al Ain is the centre for this . Not sure how this is going to work - either done before or after the contract signing ?
you cannot get away with the medical after joining - this is for the issue of yr Omani Licence . If you have a current Class A medical , what is the problem ?

By the way , if you have evidence of a Psychometric Test , it will be fine . Why not try and take one somewhere before resigning yr current job - just in case you are loopy ?

Thanks. Have a class I medical. Sounds like a good idea to take a psychometry test prior to joining. Appreciate the help. I guess my question relating to the medical was-- is it the astronaut physical like they do in Japan or Korea or is it like a standard Canadian or FAA medical.
I have some minor health issues(reported and documented) which have not affected my medical to date. I am concerned that I might not be able to pass the Japanese type physical.

No , its thorough but not astronautical , otherwise I would not be here !! Its done in-house except for chest x-rays etc , The Doc is more interested in keeping you fit to fly rather than trapping you.
