Emirates Hiring Frenzy
Hi guys
I know this is mainly a forum for pilots. I am applying as EK crew and have heard they are looking for 8000 new crew. If anyone is currently working for Ek, I would like to know how you feel about this.
a> Is it true and if so - are they still hiring?
b> Is there a mass departure of current crew?
c> Do you think they can sustain this growth as there will be a lot of inexperienced crew members out there
d> Is there a trend of nationality that is being hired? I am an aussie and I know we and the SA's are not always the flavour of the month over there

a) True. They are hiring on a massive scale.
b) Yes. Most CC only seem to last 3 years. The company appears to be fine with this.
c) Good question. They'll try. Who knows if they'll succeed.
d) Far East is the 'flavour of the month.' I did, however, just work with a brand new Aussie.

I believe there is a forum dedicated to cabin crew, but you have some valid questions here.
a)They are, and will be constantly hiring to not only foster the expansion, but replace those that are continuously leaving
b) Not validated, but since this is a rumor network, in the last 2 months they have lost over 900 cabin crew (or resignations have been submitted). This equates to over 15% of the CC.Not bad (sic) considering the "bonus" has yet to be determined or announced.Typically most leave just after payout of that.
c)What they think and what reality is are two different things.You have a very good point only to be seen in the future.
d)although they seem to be going for Asian's in a big way at present (I suspect simply because many of the traditional western nationalities are finding the T/C and package not as attractive any more) I do believe they will consider anyone that applies. They would appear to be running recruiting workshops at various locations worldwide, and they just ran large advertising campains in Toronto and Vancouver in widely read daily newspapers.

Thanks mate. I have been looking at the cabin crew forum but get the feeling there are more staff and also residents of the UAE here.
This is really helpful info. I suppose one of the reasons I am interested in EK (apart from being able to live in Dubai and explore the region) is the fact the the Sheik funds a lot of the airline's costs etc so I guess that no matter what the bumps mean - it will always be looked after.
I really appreciate everyone's insight to this and it is a great resource and food for thought.

Just to clarify the Sheik has no need to subsidize the airline. their cost base is akin to Ryanair in Ireland, mostly due to the insanely low labor costs in the UAE for general labor. Even many of the white collar workers here make a fraction of what a developed country would pay, especially if a trade union was involved.
Last year they made over $700 million USD declared profit. All this while funding expansion.
Even if the industry were to suffer yet another blow, you can bet that the company will do whatever necessary to ensure it's survival (read yet further cuts to employee compensation, as I believe they've trimmed all else already!), without the need for cash from the government. I suspect that if it came down to a required bail-out from the government, there would be many more prevalent issues in the world to make that an issue of non-consequence.

Thanks for the info Outta heresoon. Something I did not know and it is really good to get a heads up on all of this.
Gee - it's really interesting reading these posts. I have lived as an expat before and am totally aware of the bitching that we all get into - as we forget how we have chosen to live abroad largely because of the better conditions.
I thought I was getting into DXB early in the good days before LOTS of people began to really exploit the fantastic lifestyle (thats what we expats do to a large extent) but it seems as if the bubble has burst ??
Or have people ALWAYS bitched and talked with lots of reference to 'the good old days'. I have probably written this in the wrong post as it is not in reference what the kind pre posters have said - I thank you guys for your info. This is not at all directed to anyone's comments specifically.
I am just having a rave and posing the theory that things always seem rosier in your first couple of years abroad. I remain optimistic about living over there and am more determined than ever to remain positive about the situation as I am guilty of giving places my 3 years and scurrying home because things 'changed'.
