In response to this posting and to save writing to a lot of people here is a bit more detail. What a great place Botswana is I have just got back from Maun. I too was curious about working there. It is a really great place, HOT though. It is very hard to discribe the place in any great detail. It is like nowhere else I have ever been. Very Interesting.

My top tip I would give you would be to go there yourself, I went around all the firms myself and they all said that you have to be there to get the job. Now they did say that there was work coming up and that lots of pilots where leaving. The impression that I was given was to have also a botswanain 206 rating and some exprience of flying in Botswana. I unfortunately could not stay, personal reasons though it was not for lack of trying to stay. I would loved to have lived and worked there for a few years.

Before I did return to the Uk though I did sus out a little known flying school ( i think it is the only one) in Gaborone the capital. I spoke to John Kula the CFI and they do a type rating and licence conversion there. I would strongly recommend that you contact him.(top air service: email at [email protected]. Cheap as well. I most certainly got the impression that it would be a great advantage, when applying to the companies.

Other than that it looks like a wonderful place the companies are all different in what they require, and the place itselfs is fantastic.

It would be a great experince for anyone to go there. The Beer is cold, though very few women.

I agree Maun is a great place but don't think the 206 rating is needed before you get there. If a company hires you then a simple law exam and a very short flight test will get you the licence conversion, both of which will be paid for by the company. After that 50 hours of flying is needed in the area before you will be let lose by yourself, this will all be done on empty sectors at and therefore won't cost you or the company anything. Yes you do need to be there to get jobs but think the money spent in Gabs may be a little wasted. If your face fits (i.e you like a few pints after a days work and you don't have any major social problems) then there is a good chance of a job.

I have a few Q's about life in Muan.

What is life like there for a foreigner outside of work?
What is the cost of living like?
Would you take your wife / partner there?
What are the living conditions like?
Is it safe?

I have never been there before but am considering a contract. I would have to leave my current job and don’t have a chance to go and have a look for myself. Any info at all would help greatly.

Flying Paddy im very curious what did u really like about that place?i ve been there and i wouldnt go there again,i also dont understand how can someone live there for more than 2 weeks(unless if someone was doing a research on goats!)
the only interesting thing actually is the women,that place is full of gorgeous women but i still wouldnt want to live there just for that reason,there is many places with gorgeous women too.
anyway thats just my point of view.

Flying Paddy, what did you actually work as over there, were you on vacation or on business? It doesn't say on your post.

Sorry to be a party pooper but anyone who happens to visit a town that they like, according to your post, should write to pprune and advocate going to live there.

I can see a few posts coming up eg "Flying in Scunthorpe ......... " after someone has visited there for the day lol.

I am curious as to why you would doubt me European flyer. I went to Maun to recce the place. I ment everything I wrote and it is a great place. The great thing about these posts is that you can express an opinion just as you have. For the record I had to return because of personal reasons with my family. As I said it was not for lack of trying to say. If you do have a opinion as to what i wrote please express it, Instead of some criptic nonsense. Why dont you go there yourself and have a look.

flying a 206/210 off dirt runways and drinking till you fall over in the evenings, sharing accomodation with others...thats what you can expect of maun.

not for everyone, but many have had great times there!

Living in Maun is definitely not for anyone.

The flying is great though.Short sectors,lots of landings.
Great experience for a first job.Then its time to move on.
