CL44 Association

As our photographers haven't yet been charged with any crime for taking photographs of the Guppy at BOH, it will leave us all free to attend the annual re-union at the Royal Air Force Club on the 21st June. Anyone wishing to attend, do please get in touch.

Biggles in Malaysia

I ran into a guy at JHB in Malaysia mid 70s name Geoff who said not long will have Belfast flying, CL44 out of England but the Transall has failed 2 engines in JHB and they have no more. Seems nothing going anywhere.
Our FAA inspector advised there is a worldwide alert to all FAADAR not to issue ferry permit or flight to the mighty 44.
Good luck at your party..

CL44-O Late off chocks-again

Difficult to see what future, other than steptoe & son lies ahead for n447ft.
Last known plan (written that is) was to have it ferried by last august. Where, how, who by and why was never answered. Chief grnd engr now retired and previous owner now encumbered with transall in similar plight
re-union of real 44-ites taking place in london-you know where to apply to

The Harland guy the aircraft is now registered is a front for your buddy, he turns out to be an Ex FAA DAR who had his approval pulled for lets say "shoddy" ferry permits. The Bill of sale to the FAA was false thus the big pounce and grounding by FAA Frankfurt.

Suspect there would be a big parking bill again..

NEW PARKING EAMP

Recent photos of N447FT DO make the a/c look good. The a/c has been moved to a new parking slot at BOH and the name of Leach seems to have faded into history. BUT someone has spent lots of dosh on her-WHY?
When we were in the BASCO hangar, the corrosion was NOT tackled-too big a job that would have needed Bombardier engineers (they replaced Canadair of course)
And who is qualified to fly her-or indeed willing to fly her?

We trust that the Yanks' backers come to see her off, if not, the $1 we paid for her to ALG is still in the cash box, trouble is that the BOH museum is under threat-her biggest asset is the set of IATA pallets on board her, can't see him taking those as hand baggage back to MIA.
Has anyone seen his adverts for crew yet?

Just had this mail yesterday from my spotter friend who works at the aerodrome:

IT`S GONE.

I've been off work ill since last Tuesday John but when I returned today I noticed it's gone. I always have a look while driving past to see whether anybody is, or has been, working on it, so i was surprised by its absence this morning. It might be just that they have moved it for some reason, but i couldn't see it anywhere in view from our hangar. There are several aircraft enthusiasts (spotters?) at work, so I'll ask around tomorrow. I`ll let you know how I get on.

It hasn't gone-just moved, our MI5 man is down there today and the FAA in Germany have taken a closer look.
So difficult to see how it could evade Legislation-take for instance one of the thousands of components that have been ignored-the gear. They are on a 10year mag particle inspection program which you have to remove them and send them to an overhaul facility. It is not an inspection that can be done while they are attached to the aircraft-not been done since the good ole days at STN and one that certainly has not been done at BOH-there are dozens more like it And where would they find a 44 landing gear approved shop these days?

I had thought he was simply going to paint it in Conroy logo in honour of the great man and just taxi it but too much dosh has been spent on it surely just for that

Hey RR. Again spoke to FAA there is a world wide bulletin to DARs not to issue a ferry permit to N447FT. Additional to that if you check the FAA regs ( I will and post tomorrow ) the Flight engineer MUST BE CURRENT even for a private ferry flight. There are no simulators and No FAA staff current or rated as FE on CL44 to check any potential FE.
Miami FAA looked in their system said GL was in Malaysia JHB putting around with a C160 transall but failed 2 engines on the ground. Seems the US agencies are watching him.......

CL44 will NOT move under "N" numbers. I know of a British guy who has the data plate and all the Structural inspections in boxes in storage.

Still the front working on the a/c are convinced otherwise. They can find by them self that there is a grounding order for the 44. But why do they spent a fortune to restore her then?

IMO they know something or hope to know something. Would be a very stupid undertaking if they don't get the 44 in the air.......

She looks good imo

Looks like a nice unit, missed a bit of black paint under the window with the roller.
We all know back in the day, it would get a ferry permit blast off and start operating, some old boy FAA check guy with a Cuban cigar would do the crew currency etc and it would probably fly around for years.

Unfortunately the world is digital, internet, SMS, compliance. Regulator staff what if this, What if that, do you think this, do you think that.Do you wipe your bum before or after the toilet, is there a system in place so you don't put your pants on before wiping your A@se blah blah blah?

So basically the older boys from 60s put it back together so its good to go but the world has changed and she just cannot comply with all the BS/Crap etc even if they wanted.

That's my rant over..............................

I agree. But still the guys who put her back together surely would know this?

Would not be the first time that a forever grounded a/c would fly once again.

Commercially?? Nah..... Only get her in Africa and she will fly on untill the end....

If they have all the FAA 8130 serviceable tags for engines/props/gear and the main items and have completed the ADs/SID etc and check cards plus STC for TCAS/TAWS 24 month pitot and transponder check they WILL/WOULD get a ferry permit from the FAA . The CAA would lift the grounding order for a positioning flight. Until the fresh tags roll in for those items it will stay where it is sitting.
