So does the Air China 29% in CX trump the China Eastern 50% in JetStar?
Get back to us on that (along with your insights on internal politics in the Chinese Politburo).

Any way you cut it, Jetstar will get its approval alright.

Algol is right. Jetstar will get the slots, regardless of the airports capacity. China Eastern, Air China, China Southern etc are all the same thing: the Chinese government. Beijing is happy either way. They can play Cathay against HKA and now Jetstar. It is a great bargaining tool and puts CX on the back foot in any negotiations with Air China(The Chinese government) Alan Joyce has been trying to get into China all along. Up until now he has tried a failed strategy of working from the outside in, hence the failed venture in Vietnam and the new deal in Japan. Looks like he finally got the state partner he needed to get into China. It must have been an incredibly sweet deal for China Eastern to get on-board. You guys need to see the forest from the trees. Beijing wants to keep all the HK carriers on the back foot and this will allow them to extract even more concessions from the likes of CX. My guess is that CX will react with a new LCC, based on Dragonair and 50% or more owned by Air China.

It will happen. I'm waiting for when CX launches a version of SQ's Scoot. Maybe they can call it "Scat". Fact is LCC are everywhere else. HKG doesn't yet have its share - and HK people are among the most money saving conscious people anywhere (even if they have bags of it). HKG-SYD-HKG for a grand less than CX and comes with a Gweilo or Chinese pilot? Yes please, they'll say.

Maybe they can call it Cx Poop. They then can use the current bucket seat in economy and serve the same meals!

No retraining needed, it can be manned by our new recruits from Pakistan and India. :ok:

Jetstar HK will have a similar effect to that of HKA and HKE. They can skim some of the cream from the regional operations at CX, but at the end of the day they do not have the network or the equipment to truly compete. CX can always undercut them on price because we operate larger aircraft with lower seat costs than an A320/B737. Throw cargo revenues into the equation, and the odds are really stacked against them. Cathay's extensive long-haul network is just another advantage that will keep the CX load factor higher than its competitors, and with higher yields.

That said, Dragonair is probably most vulnerable to this threat in its smaller markets where it flies A320s. However, I doubt Jetstar is looking at flying to second tier markets where the demand is very contingent on connections from Hong Kong onwards.

None of this will stop the company from spinning the LCCs as a threat that must be managed with labour concessions. This is where we will have to stop them. We helped build this company into the global force that it is today. For this, we get to enjoy the fruits by working on vastly superior packages to those of our competition. Needless to say, the cadet program recruiting in places like India and Pakistan is seeking to swing the pendulum in the opposite direction.

Jetstar Hong Kong lodges AOC papers, on track for 2013 | Plane Talking

JETSTAR says it is getting strong support from Hong Kong's tourism industry after having lodged its application for Jetstar Hong Kong's air operator's certificate with the Civil Aviation Department.

The airline said the certificate mapped out how the joint venture with China Eastern would manage its engineering, ground operations, fleet and staffing. It also committed the airline to meeting all necessary regulatory requirements, including the key proviso that its principal place of business and centre of decision-making would be in Hong Kong. The airline has set up a project team for Jetstar Hong Kong and expects soon to announce key positions, including that of chief executive. Jetstar Group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said the new airline would provide hundreds of jobs and add millions of dollars in annual economic activity by the time it reached its target of 18 aircraft in 2015. Jetstar has brushed off doubts about its ability to get regulatory approval.

Qantas domestic in Australia have seen much of their business transferred to Jetstar (for reasons best known to their management).

So the same thing will potentially happen in HK, with the incumbent "domestic" carrier KA/CX standing to lose.

HK authorities are pro-competition but also protective of CX so there is a real dichotomy here.

Interesting times ahead.

Sorry, but what defines the domestic market in Hong Kong? Where does CX and KA stand to lose? Do you mean mainland China? What will prevent KA from matching fares with Jetstar HK? Or just flooding the market with seats? They fly similar equipment, A320 and A330, but have a much deeper pockets and a stronger revenue stream with onward connections and developed cargo markets. Jetstar HK is more likely to price stimulate the markets they fly to than pull much traffic off CX/KA. Over time, Jetstar could pose a threat if they grow to be a large presence, but for now there is little threat beyond what HKA & HKE already generate.

Good luck to them . There is no way in hell that the Jetstar model will work out of HK . You can just about guarantee 20 mins delay on arrival due to traffic , and delays of up to 3 hours due to WX in china or Military exercises on departure.so if they are planning quick turn arounds in HK , Dreaming ! China eastern can't help either as they are always complaining about there delays .

Transfering from HKA to Jetstar Hong Kong
 
There are many of us at Hong Kong Airlines that are desperate to escape this poorly managed and disrespectful company.

Is there any official information about the expected salary at Jetstar Hong Kong?

Rumor is 6 weeks annual leave, Capt 120,000 HKD each month and free yearly transport for family back to country of origin with good medical and loss of license insurance. Rostering 5 days on 4 days off.

If this is true I have about 40 Pilots ready to sign and leave this company. HKA just can not get it right after all these years. They have no idea to treat staff, and penny pinch in areas which cost them much more over all. Rostering and management have gotten worse, and the CAD is not happy.

Get me out of here. Like rats in a sinking ship we all want out now.

Jetstar salary information appreciated.

Man, what have you been smoking ? You knew what you were in for when you joined HKA (it is well documented on this forum) Now you and others are hoping for a change in fortune. Love the rumoured T&C's for Jetstar HKG.
Sadly they will turn out to be just someones wish list. Budget airlines can and do employ pilots for a lot less. The reason why airlines are successful at this is because some pilots will fly for very little just to get the jet time, only to have their actions "bite them on the arse" at a later date. Be carefull what you wish for and good luck with that rumour.
