Is it a 777? In BAs ops manual (Boeing) the max demonstrated x wind in non LVO is 28/29 knots for 200/300. We can't auto land up to the aircrafts manuak x wind limits.
Apologies if it's not a 777, the original post went on a fair bit.

Thank goodness he landed or else we would have had the go-around and diversion drivel as well. I hope he gets an hero award as no one else has landed in a typhoon before. Poor FOs had to listen to his crap all the way over to HK.

With the formatting of the original post being so awkward, would a reasonable précis be that they took off from London, flew to Hong Kong and then landed?

I think that whole diatribe of self promotion and self hero worship could have best been summarised by any normal person as

Had to sign on early, checked the wx, chucked on some more gas and let the aeroplane auto land in a ' bit of a blow'....The End.

While we are at it can we come to some sort of gentlemen's agreement that shameless self promotion is most definitely out, especially you Evo, if you happen to be reading.
Oh and while I'm at it can we lay off the ' I didn't get the flap out until 995 feet so I'm going to write an essay about it' trend. In particular the inclusion of such phrases as, but not limited to:

' I'm going to fall on my sword here......'
' I really learnt about flying from this....'
' I never thought I'd be writing to you.....'

Oh and One more thing. That barely qualified as a typhoon.
My Granny could have landed in that.
Mind you, she was a great Stick and rudder man.... so to speak.

Another sycophant having his Anthony Weiner moment. Assume the accompanying soundtrack is kumbaya. If not mean for publication, what does it say about the state of affairs upstairs.

Rupert Hogg on board. No pressure.
M and G on the horn. No pressure.

Why was this flight given the green light, and the other ones cancelled?
Maybe because Rupert Hogg had to go home?

Esteemed colleagues
please accept my apologies for generating such a heated discussion, this was not my intention.
To clarify the event , some facts.
CC had been withdrawn a few hours before this flight, and the union's advice is to offer support during disruption, in what I can only assume is an effort to show what can be achieved with Industrial Harmony, and provide weight to the value of having the troops onside.
Therefore with an e-mai from FOPs , a note under the door and an OCN I acknowledged as per the union's mandate.
I apologise if I misunderstood this.
I have never in my life worked a G day, have been a union member since Day 1 and have contributed the extra cash to the 49ers when I couldn't really afford to do so, so I can assure you if anyone doubts my allegiance to the HKAOA you are simply mistaken.
Regarding the 'War and Peace', This 'Diatribe' was not meant for publication and I was not aware it was going to be included in the newsletter.
It was expressly written for a mate who is about to start command training and asked for a comprehensive breakdown of the flight.
It was meant to be a positive learning experience for him so I hope he is not reading this thread and getting put off the concept of doing a professional job when required.
Gus subsequently asked for my thoughts on how the event was managed so I copied same to him with the note that "this is how to suck eggs 101" for everyone but for what its worth.....

Purely coincidental that the last flight not to be cancelled had Rupert Hogg and a Swire prince onboard, with the GMO personally being available to chaperone it from go to whoa.

Safety, of course, is Cathay's first priority with no bias or favoritism...

Author = Narcissistic Pillock. I don't know what to be offended more by, the moron who wrote the article, or a management that thought the rest of us would care or be anything other than cynically bemused

Was it all crosswind or was there a hedgewind component also?
We had a guy like that in my previous company. His nickname was "Smoking Hole". And,yes, he killed himself and another guy eventually.
