Don't come...yet.

I joined shortly after the ban and I have been on the line for a while. Life has been quite strange. Things started off fairly well, as I was very busy initially and most people I met were great. My girlfriend left only weeks after we got here, not because of the dispute and the Ban issues, but because she was bored here. She has a good job back home and I am now going to commute. Then, things got strange and I received a bunch of phone calls from some pretty angry people, but this has stopped. When I show up for a flight, it is always the same question: Hi, how long have you been here? I never know what the response will be. I either get the cold shoulder treatment or some of those guys are great and do not mention anything. Who is genuine and who is not? The reason that I am writing on this forum is to tell you of my experience with a CX crew manager. After I received the phone calls, I called someone in the office about it. I was asked to come in for a chat. As soon as I came into the office, I was asked if I had any name to report. Did anyone made you feel unwelcome on any flight? Did you recognize any voice? At some point, he made the comment that he could not wait to catch one of those "bastards" making the calls. He also suggested that I change my phone number and that I could claim for the fees involved. After about ten minutes of that, where he seemed very much concerned for my well being and asking me questions about my social life, our conversation became very weird. I asked him if there was any possibility to go on a three or four month unpaid leave. He suddenly became very defensive and told me that only the DFO could approve such an unusual request. He said: “Because you are still within your first year probation, I STRONGLY suggest that you go back home and re-think about this request. We will do our best to make life here as good as it possibly can be, but we are very short staff right now. If you still want to go ahead with your request, you will have to write a letter to the DFO”

When he said: I STRONGLY suggest that… it was very obvious what he meant. Don’t rock the boat.

There is not a single day that goes by without I thinking that I should have waited until this dispute was all over. If I were you, I would find a way to delay and stall as much as possible. I think that this will be a great place to work at some point, but it is a tough go right now. The Union will not last for long and some of the good guys I flew with told me that the members are not going to pay for a long time. Be wise in what you say and be patient.

Another wind up? I would suggest that your manager is right, change your phone number, be more explicit in your complaints, knuckle down and get on with it. Your girl friend was bored!!! In Hong Kong? You have got to be kidding.

Huh?!

I'm not sure what you find "weird" about the manager being not too thrilled about the idea of your taking a 3 or 4 month leave of absence (paid or unpaid) after you've been there what, 6 or 7 months? In any job it's pretty bad form to make such a request when you're on probation! What did you expect? "There there, you go back to Aussie/Canada/UK and come back when things are settled down and you're good and comfy.."?!

His comments on "We will do our best to make life here as good as it possibly can be, but we are very short staff right now" actually sound sensible to me. And I was reading your post trying to find fault with CX management!

I'm sorry, but I don't know what your point was.

dry your eyes princess.....
sleepless in hk.... no offense but it sounds like you need to grow some balls....
people making phone calls and scaring you in the night, why dont you tell them to meet you somewhere so you can "discuss it like gentlemen". thats what i would do with tactics like that. then whinging about your girl friend not being there because she was bored. ive spend many and hour / dollar in wanchai. could amuse myself for months there.. some of the 24 hr hairdressers are very friendly.... you dont need her now do you? i can give you some names and addresses if need be.
just remember youve got a job with a damned good airline. cant believe you went and asked them for time off. your on probation!!! you basically shut up and do your job for the next however long.
hope ive been helpful.

ps remember you want one in each port anyway...

SiHK,

you do have some ballz, ENOUGH to ask for unpaid leave so soon!

You sure you are not writing this to encourage people not to take up jobs??

If you can't hack, I think you made the wrong choice in Hong Kong.

I accepted to join CX before the ban was officially in place. I joined after it was in place. I wish I had as much information about the whole situation then, as you guys have now. I came from a very small outfit, without a union. My last job was in such a remote place and we were so busy, reading Pprune was simply not something I did. CX told me not to worry about the ban and I did not really inquire further about it. I was just so blinded by the fact that I was going to cruise in an A340. I simply posted here to help you make an informed decision, not to be attacked on a very personal level. I have always been considered to be a “nice guy” and now I fell as if I was a hired mercenary.

Collar! If you ever make it to HKG and get hired by CX, How about if YOU and I meet somewhere so we can "discuss it like gentlemen"? I received four phone calls, three in the middle of the night. Should I have had four “discussions” with those blokes?

I simply stated that she had left, I was not whinging about it.

You really are a genius Collar.

Collar’s quote:

Pretty good airline managed by some pretty ruthless people. When the Crew Manager told me “I STRONGLY suggest….” You should have seen his demeanour. I really felt intimidated by that Crew Manager and IT WAS weird.

Collar’s quote:

I did not go and request time off. They asked me to come for a “chat” after I called regarding the harassment that I was facing. Only after I felt completely at ease with the Crew Manager, I thought about requesting UNPAID leave for a while. Since you do not have a clue about what life has been for me for the past few months…why bother.

That was my last post on this forum, all the best to all.

Hey Sleepless,

Please stick around, the fun has not even begun yet. This summer will be VERY interesting indeed. Hope that you are happy with your present circle of SCAB friends, cause that's all you'll ever get.

Hmmm, sounds like it just might be house-cleaning time (again) in the flight ops department, line pilots division.

Sleepless

Dont be too discouraged by the replies you've had here - only a tiny minority of pilots would consider the vitriol from your collegues to be appropriate - personally I think your post was interesting and useful, as at some stage I'm thinking of applying to CX, but only when all this stuff is over.

Hang in there and eventually it will blow over.

Interesting time ahead

Sleepless In Hong Kong

Do stay around! If Nigel wins the AOA elections (which I think likely as the AOA will declare all of the many who are only paying 1% and not 5% subs as non-financial and therefore can't vote - so Nigel wins by default as the 5% nutters will vote for him), then I suspect Nigel's next move will be a strike or sick out. This will break the union as MANY will not comply. Scum like Hoffa will be fired. Then the VAST majority of guys you work with will be on your side.

Don't worry, the AOA is heading for an implosion.

Hoffa

Are you one of the Cathay guys who has taken an upgrade recently? If so, you are the real replacement pilot.

There are NO scabs at CX! There is no industrial action by the CX pilots. NO S/Os were fired.

Perhaps I should post the names, addresses and phone numbers of the CX pilots who took the jobs of the 49ers! But that would be childish, and gutless.
