Time Will Tell

With over $100,000 offered for 6 months approx. This would be an inviting offer for a Lame. But the QF Engineers might have something to say about that.

Its time Qantas proved it is not tight-assed as its only been ripping of its own Engineers for years now. With massive profits and an excellent safety record (Thanks to its Engineers), its time Qantas showed some appreciation for its excellent Engineers.

The money has some pretty big strings attached. Don't you worry about that.

They may be offering the huge figure, but like insurance companies if there is a way out of paying it they won't pay.

A lot of fine print in those contracts.

The concern would not to be labelled a scab.

What is the definition.

If there was no strike, and certain guys wanted to top up their bank accounts with some casual/partime work for a few months, is there anything wrong with that.

Exactly what QF engineers do on their holidays, pushing fulltime contractors out of work, lowering their TnC's and chances of training.

Bit like training your dog to s#)t on next door's garden.

RE: show me the money

According to the ALAEA, 60% of the LAMEs made redundant from Qantas have left the industry. I keep in touch with quite a few and all of them have vowed never to return, even for $100K. Apparently John Holland has also been trying to entice these guys back into the industry to no avail. Anyone know if this is true?
Yesterday I spoke to a former QF LAME made redundant 18 months ago. He got a knock on the door from a labour hire firm making him the offer of $100K for 6 months on standby to work whenever required and an immediate $1500 sign-on bonus. He'd get the $100K even if he didn't do any work!
I've no idea what QF think they'll achieve. While a few redundant ex-Air NZ LAMEs have apparently signed up, alot of ex-QF LAMEs out there have been left with a very nasty taste in the mouth by QF and will steer well clear of 'scabbing'. Are there large numbers out there who can get a significant amount of leave from their employer to moonlight when they've been employed for only 18 months or so? And aren't LAME's in short supply world-wide? Foreign LAMEs will need to go through a thorough approval and induction process both by CASA and QF. QF will need alot more than the paltry few they've attracted so far to keep the airline in the air. If they hope to 'break' the LAME's ala the 1989 pilots strike I just can't see how they'll manage it. And if they do get enough numbers to make a difference, at what financial cost? A mere 30 'scab' LAMEs @ $100K each comes to $3 million, which is the difference between the 3% offered and 5% demanded. And QF would need alot more than 30 LAMEs to keep the airline operating.
There's a meeting on 4 Jan between the ALAEA and QF to resolve the impasse, but a few days ago, QF cancelled all LAME's leave for Jan-Feb, before the union's protected industrial action has even commenced. That's just a little combative isn't it? It's clear they are not entering the negotiations in good faith so no-one's holding out much hope of a resolution. So any enterprising lads out there, you may actually work for your $100K after all! Good luck!

Misinformed!!

It might be interesting to note that when QF engineers are contracting abroard the companies they work for are not involved in industrial action.I for one would not involve myself in aiding a companies plight to screw its workers and for that i am aware that most respectable engineers would do the same.

I can't believe that engineers around the world don't support each other on these issues. WE MUST STICK TOGETHER!!!!!

Now don't get me wrong I wish not to hurt any company and the passengers that fly but when management can not manage properly and then hurt the worker because of their shortfalls.................

Misguided

TD74,

I am referring to locals and contractors, ie- permanent contractors.

Some MRO's have planned type courses for connies only to cancel them because the QF guys have fronted up and saved the day. They also reduce o/t possibilities and pay rates. Supply and demand.

There dosen't have to be known industrial action, as in some countries it isnt tolerated. The locals may have their own o/t bans and WTR on, and these QF hero's know nothing of it.

If QF need LAE's for a short term due to understaffing, is it OK for guys from OS to come down under for a working holiday.

Same scenario to me.

ignorance is not an excuse mainwheel.

before most q lames head offshore they ask the question. why is there a staff shortage.

also most of the contracting work done at mas which you refer too has been advertised full time with little or no response.

if there is no industrial action then yes o/s workers would be welcome.

and is qe understaffed ? not by managements perspective

Can't say I have seen you posting here before Mainwheel asking that I not come to Malaysia because your in line for a course.

You cant start blaming guys months or years later for events they knew nothing about.

This PIA at QE is very well known and any LAE who takes the cake will have a hard time saying they knew nought all about it.

Sure you are not here for a stir.......????

Angry eba presentation by qf

qf are telling their lames that what is being offered in the new eba is not really what the intent of it is particularly relating to the xpt and reclassification clauses. Can somebody in their right mind really expect the lames to believe what they say??.1 wonders if the content of the contracts being offered to non qf lames is the same?ie do they mean what they have written or is it not really the intent of it?

There is always one!

MW in ref. to your term hero's? do you have a specific few in mind or do you just have a gripe with all QF engineers?

For my mind,it's better to get a point across without the use of insult about professionals you seemingly know nothing about.

However you do make a valid point, I feel it would be in the best interest for all company employed engineers or contracting staff to post on sites such as this, information about what is happening in their workplaces, then we ALL might be able to gauge the situation of employment before we head abroad.

BAL and TD74, and others.

If you have any pilot mates from 89, as i do and they have my ultimate respect, they will tell you what a "hero" is.

Maybe i'm having a stir, isn't this the best place to air the truth. If it hurts, too bad.

I find it ironic that QF engineers on a good wicket is auz utilise union fought for "holidays" to go overseas and drum up some 90-100 hrs per week and then come home, in need of a break, to the sheltered workshop, to then despise anyone who would take an offer of "part time, ie- not permanent" work with their employer.

Obviously this does not apply to all QF gingerbeers. Only a few who have actually caused overseas MRO's to cancel planned type courses for connies and locals. The supply-demand theory is self explainitory, rates would go up for us connies if they weren't there.

I would never take an offer to grease QF's industrial cause and would despise anyone that would. Let that sink in!

So if there is no strike, and QF advertise for guys to assist their staff, whats the problem?

Mainwheel, although not exactly the same, similar things have happened to the local Avalon guys over the years with all the long and short term imports. And most of them get a permanent residents' visa out of it as well.
