LH I meant "pukey" in terms of recognition of a QF SO rating by the rest of the world. Best rating it would get is P2 with a push.

fartsock,

Further on from your point, I believe that case in the early 90s was the circumstance that brought about the present requirement for Qantas Cadets to be self funded...

You don't have to self fund the S/O endorsement, so a bond is fine by me! ... Even if some people think its 'pukey' by world standards

Whats the big deal guys?
Just about every Airline on this side of the Globe have an initial bond on type hanging around their necks.
We get rebonded everytime we change types...Its not an ideal situation, it may not even be legal?, but its a fact of life in this industry, why have a go at Qantas for being like all other operators?
If you dont like it you could always leave and join a new company...and probably face a new bond in some cases..

Karunch you hit the nail pretty hard there. I often have a chuckle at all the guys so desperately seeking all the guff they can about getting into Qantas. Sure it is seen as the the pinnacle of aviation here, but (and this is my opinion only),it really isn't all it is cut out to be.
Believe it or not I am one that actually left QF to go elsewhere - I earn a bit less now but I am about 300% happier and so is my family.
I think the point is there are a lot of guys in QF, who deep down aren't happy, but actually find it hard to admit it to themselves because anything less than QF is seen as haven't made it yet. It's a bit of the old "hang on, I must be happy, this is Qantas." Yes they have the best machines, great pay etc etc. But I'm just glad I was able to say to myself 'Hey I'm not happy, it's not what I had hoped, time to move on and do what is best for myself and my family - and not worry about what QF think, because they don't give a rat's about me.
On saying this though, I do acknowledge that the vast majority are hugely happy there. So to those that aren't there yet - my opinion only is that it aint that great and there are better jobs out there, even if they are not seen as the pinnacle.
And I didn't pay the bond.

Good post Russell The Lov.
QF is not for everyone, I think most of us realise this as there has been very little comment after someone leaves to go elsewhere.
Horses for courses!
Having said that I doubt anyone can honestly say they are 100% happy with their job, even if it was their dream job! . On balance most of us are happy enough to stay and I beleive this could probably be said for nearly all pilots in airlines.

if qantas wanted to offer me a job and then bond me for 30,000 dollars then i'd go.

at the present stage i'm bonded for 10000 dollars on an aztec and islander? go figure aye! rather out of proportion.

rather like the idea of flying something a little bigger - like a 737 upwards

Gee, if everybody had to pay $30,000 to get out, maybe there wouldn't have been so many resignations back in ..........

Feather #3 mentioned something I was going to mention. The idea isn't new. I've signed a couple of 'bonds'. One as a cadet and then another when I started.

I think the one as a cadet was for about $50K if I didn't accept the job offer when it was given and had about three years on it and then the one when I joined which in early '95 was for either $20K or $25K, I don't remember which because leaving wasn't in my short term plans.

QF isn't for everyone but it is a pretty good job and if you looking for 'stability' and decent conditions when compared to the rest of Australia then it isn't too bad. If you are after 'worlds best standards' with regard to pay and associated issues then I'm afraid that you may be sorely dissappointed with QF.

If you after $$$ then it could be worse, you could be flying with Virgin!

Cool Bond

Russell,

Thanks for your post. I couldn’t agree more. I too can’t see a problem with being subject to the bond. If you don’t know what you’re getting yourself in for when you join QF then you really only have one person to blame for being so uninformed. If you join QF (or any organisation) and subsequently find that the job makes you unhappy or is detrimental to your family/social/financial situation then be true to yourself and your principles and leave. Do not be fooled by some sense of false loyalty to your employer, they would probably cut you lose as soon as the commercial circumstances dictated that was necessary. As they have a corporate responsibility to do.

Remember always that the company does not exist for the benefit of the employees. They don’t maintain a corporate presence to make you rich, fulfill your dreams, make you a better person, help your chances with the opposite (or same) sex, or for that matter provide for your retirement, although you may use your employer as a means toward these ends. Qantas and all public and private companies exist to make profit for the shareholders so unless as an employee of QF you have a shed load of shares and therefore voting rights at the AGM unfortunately your opinion as an employee will remain a very small voice.

As far as the bond goes, I hope to succeed in the ‘draft’ for this years cadet program and I know for sure that if, during the interview, the nice recruitment folk ask me if I mind being subject to a bond, I shall reply “Will that be cash or cheque!”. I really consider it a very small price to pay to continue to do something that I love so much and gain a great deal of personal satisfaction and professional pride from.

Bonds aren't new. The defence forces have had bonds for years.
The RAAF charge 10 years and the Army 6 for their conversions courses. The pay post Grad is about half what a QF S/O gets, by the time they are able to get out they are paid about $85K per year depending on rank. So $30K for a job you have aspired to, and lets face it is nil outlay unless you leave.

P.S I don't work for QF, I just turn someone else's money into my own.
