What you propose re Y seats/J class food is exactly what's been happening worldwide. It's called "premium economy" and it appears to be a winner where it's operating.
I think British started it with their Worlsd Traveller and to raise a ghost AN used to some moons ago.
While we are on the subject of British, it seems Mr Eddingtons chooks have home to roost come. Mr Ayling had it heading in the right direction. When you purge on top of deep cuts why would you be surprised if it all falls apart. The throwing away of the Harvard 'plunder and pillage' MBA routine been a long time overdue in its exposing as a bankrupt short term enhancer of ones career.
You are right QF for the moment have it arse backwards in regard to the "premium" economy pax.
However I for one am prepared to put it down to the enormous pressure under which they have been working consolidating their position and just keeping the whole system upright, with the exit of AN.
That "grace" period is just about up and it must be time to sit back quietly and as Tevye says "review the situation".

What really peeved me was that I didn't get the Tea / Coffee option.
Saturday wasn't the nicest day to fly ADL - SYD, it was freezing, and the only drinks on offer were water or soft drink, or whatever you paid for, alcohol wise.
NO HOT DRINKS!

You are right about the KISOX BISOX and similar fares, however these disappear getting close to departure date forcing full Y which is a pain in the butt when you are trying to provide someone with an overseas connector KIX fare which we often have to do at short notice.
As for the meals - with 4 J class sectors MELOOLMEL in the last few months, I can attest to the food being absolute crud - and even the bread roll would have still taken the swing after 50 overs. My clients pay top dollar for those seats and I am embarrased at what they are served. Service level was excellent I must admit.
It is not hard to produce palatable cuisine at a price. Many of my clients ride the rat to SIN now and connect Air France - and are now members of Frequence Plus, their frequent flyer program, because they say the catering even in Y is Cordon Bleu - as compared to Cordon Rouge.
One Peter Smith took over the catering at DPO many years ago when F27s had blue and gold stripes or red A's, and for a very good price produced excellent meals. He is now a multi millionaire with catering companies serving airlines world wide.
Nice to hear djembe had a good experience out of DPO too!!!
Best all

Loco, I know Pete Smith personally & must agree on the catering quality his company provided. Yes, him and his brother aren't short of a quid, & both mad as cut snakes but I think you'll find they've sold most of their share to another mob now.
Paxing in J or Y class out of a port where they provided catering, as opposed to the other cities, was very noticeable. Bring back the old days I say.

Pete and Andrew did the best jobs and obviously still do.
They were running a cheescake business in Latrobe where Pete lived when I came home one day and whinged about the caterer that we inhereted from TN.
The powdered eggs and smash if you touched it bacon had become too much.
My wife suggested I contract Pete as Andrew was already running the DPO kiosk - so was there for the flights anyway.
The rest is history and a well earned fortune has been made.
Great quality, excellent price. It isnt too hard after all.
I am just sad that they are not still making cheescakes. Nothing else comes close.

Uuuuuuh - fine sentiments Borg.
However I would consider the substances inside the QF meal boxes and J trays would be considered as toxic waste.
Maybe they should drop the leftovers to the kangaroos at Puckapunyal.
That would save a fortune on the cull.
OK - I know -the RSPCA would class it as an uspeakable act of cruelty!!

I would gladly put up with the boxed food, if the aircraft ran on time. 4 QF flights in the past few weeks, all departed at least an hour late - and my collegues tell the same story. I hold no allegiance to any airline, but have to say roll on VB if it means being back to running on schedule -

You guys are overcomplicating this thing.....
On a recent QF flight at the end was the lil fella "Thanking us for CHOOSING to fly QF" (no other choice.....)
Mind you I still have indigestion from the freaking "lunch" they served, probably should have eaten the cardboard box.....
QF do it coz THEY CAN.....Remeber that a monopoly is only a bad thing if you don't own it....

On a recent trip flew with Qantas, Kendall, and Virgin at various times. There is nothing wrong with the QF box, it's just that people expect more. On DJ you get nothing, but don't bat an eyelid because it's what you expect. Kendall was superior by far, but how long can they keep it up?
International is really where the problem is- precisely because there is choice. The QF product is second rate. It is terrible to board a QF flight and feel relieved because it is actually a codeshare operated by BA.
