Buster Hyman. In hindsight it was a poor management decision by AN/NZ to use mainline services to compete against VQ and DJ.
The AN Air Coach style operation that brought EW to its knees and eventually out of business in the 80's could have been reinstated.
FYI The 4 F28-4000's have been on the market for some time as flyable a/c. VH-FKO (ex Lloyds) in particular is one of the lowest times F28's in the world.
Ansett Aircraft Trading have received numerous enquiries for the aircraft since they were taken out of service.
Unfortunately third world countries do not like to pay for first world aircraft condition and maintenance.
Similar situation with some of the F27's when they were retired.
We have seen both F27's and F28-1000's scrapped in Australia.
I can obtain the F28-4000 times for you if you wish.

Just a thought, could they be going back into service? ANII is slowly expanding its services and using 5 a/c that you own would would seem to to be cheaper than paying the rent on ones that you don't own. Idle they are a depreciateing asset, working they might earn a bit. Anyway the noise would be a good advert that they are back in business.
What type is the fifth wholly owned a/c?

The F28 was my first jet too. A great training ground for young F/Os. An aircraft with great performance and lots of fun. Remember the ferry flights - F300 at 30nms for a straight in approach, and still stabilised at 1500 feet on finals! It still brings a smile to my face.
A sad farewell indeed. A shame somebody in the West couldn`t buy one to keep as a flying museum. The F28 certainly contributed greatly to the development of Western Australia.
GREYBEARD, the one that let you down, was that the RTO in Broome on Jan 28th 1989 in FKI?? I seem to recall it makes a lot of noise when the rear turbine blades depart!

EWL,
some great comments about the old F28s, they were a wonderful old bus. I remember when VH-EWA first flew into TMW - great stuff for a 1st year apprentice! One small correction; the 3000s came from Cimber Air in Denmark, not Saudia. EW, KD.... how is it 1st class operations are taken and so completely stuffed up.

You are correct calling Cimber Air the owners of the Foxy and Golf - but they must have been on on lease to Saudia when sold to EWA. Some such facts are in the dead zone.
You may still have the newsletter to staff floating around showing teatowel heads lining up to board one of the somewhere in the desert. If I can find the newsletter I will scan it and email.
They definitely arrived in Saudia green and white? livery and were repainted and refitted at TMW. What a bleeding marvelous facility that was!!!Even AN gaped when they glommed us - that and the yield management system.
Memories abound of the F28s - funniest was when crews were training after the night flight got in from MEL. Late night - 2100-2359 - circuits and bumps - single engine shutdowns etc. The F28 would go out over Pardoe Downs (the Devonport equivalent of Redfern) screaming happily on one Spey - do a circuit and do it all over again. Then the phones would start. Standard retort was - how long have you lived there?? Oh - 3 months?? sorry - the airport was here before you - and what does one expect to hear under a flight path - cows mooing??? In the end we had to lock the airport gate as the tense little housing commissioners started turning up in VERY bad moods!

Thanks for clearing that one up Skyhawk. I shall beat my source severly for such poor info!!
WRT putting them back into service, I wonder what the cost would actually be. They aren't looking too flash down there.

Hey Eastwest Loco, I found out something that may interest you. I just discovered one of the AN F28-4000's for sale on the net. They are asking $1.25 million US. If you want I will email or post the link for any F28 enthusiast who wants to see for themselves.
Get a petition going and get some donations, and get a fractional ownership happening??

I arrived back in Mel on Wed and the first thing I noticed was 2 F28's missing and the other 2 parked were facing north now.
Anyway in addition to operators of F28's worldwide add Air Canada regional. I saw a bunch in YVR 5 days ago whilst on my trip.
Never flew one, but loved the sound!!

Voodoo - please do send me the link -and thank you. I spoke to a fellow PPRuner yesterday on the phone - excellent to hear from him. He raised a very good point - Fokker never put in place a retrofit kit to mount derated Tays onto F28s to make them stage 3 compliant. A big ole oversight there for an aeroplane with a proud and fairly bulletproof history behind it.
The Fokker 70 was basically an F28 with stage 3 compliant engines - so the lifespan of many of the old girls could well have been extended in the 1st world.

EWL your history is spot on, but ratchit is correct, prior to EWA the 3000's were owned by Cimber Air, on lease to the Saudi's. As for performance I recall 300knots to 3.6 dme SYD rwy16(R) on slope, and a heave on the ol' everybody up-front lever, and the f28 would cross the threshold in the groove. Unfortunatley due to the effectivness of those big barn door speedbrakes, if you weren't bolted in you'd be hard up against the forward bulkhead. They didn't go too fast, but boy could they stop.

Eastwest, I thought I'd post it for all to go check it out.
It was at www.barnstormers2000.com
Just have to to search under Air Transport, then Fokker, and you'll see.
Regards.....

I have a copy of the June 1987 Australian "Aircraft" magazine, which has a good article about East-East and its 40th Birthday. It has a few pictures of the 2 F28-3000 from Cimber Air in the the hangar at Tamworth. They are black and white photos but they have the Cimber Air logo on the tail and the name Cimber below the windows just aft of the the airstair door.
The article also contains facts about East-Wests passenger numbers for the following years:
1983-1984: 630,400
1984-1985: 838,200
1985-1986: 938,400
Average Load Factor was 64.5%.
In the news section of the same mag it says that East-West had just ordered the F100.
So how did they end up with the B146 and not the F100's that they ordered, was this because of Ansett purchasing East-East?

Maybe the F-28's are already sold? From the link above, the advert states:
"This is an ex-Ansett aircraft , one owner since new . We own it and are currently doing the C check."
And the advertiser is not Ansett or any Ansett subsidiary.

As a matter of interest just looking at the CASA weekly rego update forms and EWD, FKI, J and O have all been deregistered from the Aussie register this week.

F111,
The 146's were courtesy of the Ansett buyout and if memory serves me correctly 3 Fokker 100's were ordered and purchased but never delivered, once again courtesy of the AN buyout. I believe they wen't to operate in the USA somewhere and were handed back a few years ago. Don't know what happened to them after that. But a check of the Aussie register a few years back showed the F100's on the register for a short while. I believe this was just an adim. procedure though as they didn't operate in Aus and perhaps didn't even land here, no guarentees on info, just what I recollect with an ageing brain.

Chimbu - good point - but selling a refit to airlines that could not afford new A/C may have made a few guilders.
Voodoo - My memory must be deserting me as I was sure that they had the Saudia tail.
Back Seat - The Fokker 100s were ordered and on the production line when EW was glommed by the Fat Man. The contract was signed sealed and delivered so AN was forced to take delivery of the A/C which I believe were farmed off to AWAS and dry leased to Air Canada or Canadian. I have no doubt that one of them has popped up back is Oz with YC possibly after lease expiring. That F100 is possibly the fifth "owned" aeroplane mentioned.
Shame Eeenie Weenie never got to run them SYDHBA and SYDOOL - that would have rattled a few windows.

Still remember my first kiss on one of these things on the way back from boarding school at the tender age of 13. Also through a friend who worked for Skywest in Hedland, was able to arrange a visit to the cockpit, as it was calle in those days. The crew couldn't offer the opportunity to sit for the landing quick enough. Enough to make any 16 year old swear on a flying career.
But the biggest turn on was seeing a captain depart off intersection alpha in Hedland RWY 14 departure for Broome. Why? Because he could!
If you could fly any aircraft what would it be ?
727 or F28
It's just like a VW
Burns S#itloads of fuel, makes twice as much noise, and i want every son of a b*tch to know that i'm flying it.
Need anything more be said?
