Good calls all round Woomera. I have decided not to throw a serpent into the swimming pool as I am riding a QFlink bugsmasher to Melbourne tomorrow and don't wish to be offloaded somewhere near Central Bass. Oh but what a good oneliner it was!

OK….For all the unedificated, to obtain the amount of pages, para’s, words, characters, etc etc, one simply C & P’s the post made by Woomera into Word….Then click on File, Properties, Statistics, and there it are.
Now I often use the good old Word to draft my post……It has a twofold effect (affect???)…..It helps me with my shocking spelling and grammar (of course you all know that gaunty has the biggest Thesaurus and Spell Checking device known to mankind), but more than that, it helps me look back over that which I have writ and many is the time I have deleted that what I put to paper, PRIOR to pushing the submit button…..Think about it, it may save you some embarrassment and Woomera the need to kick your RRR’s outa here for a while.
Now if I haven’t made sufficient mistakes, how come the page is full of red squiggly lines

Actually KAOS it is you who is wrong. The phrase to which you refer, pilot's licence, is grammatically correct only when written as above. It is referring to the licence of a pilot, or if using it in the plural many pilots (pilots'). I think you'll find that even the RTA understands the concept if you look at your driver's licence.

Whilst we are all being so pedantic, I feel it is (no need for apostrophe) time to explain the License/Licence issue a little more clearly.
A “Licence” is the actual document that has been issued, whereas, the “license” is what the particular authority has to issue such document.
Therefore:
The CASA is LICENSED with the power to issue you with your LICENCE to fly or maintain the aircraft.

When I was a kid in high school we had a teacher from Pakistan taking our maths class...and he had a language problem...he kept referring to the "turd" digit! We all failed maths because we couldn't stop laughing!

I have been accused, quite legitimately, of being a pedant in matters grammatical, but I did wonder whether it was really worth a thread here. Some people can construct a sentence, others can't. Successsfully imparting the message is the main object, and since I've had violence threatened on my person for being a smart-arsed git in the past, I generally bite my tongue now.
But I am shocked to see the explanations posted earlier re effect/affect and licence/license.
I will not be utterly dogmatic about this because stranger things have occurred in life than my being mistaken, but I have always been under the impression that correct usage in both cases depends solely on whether the word in question is being used as a verb or a noun: affect, verb; effect, noun. License, verb; licence, noun. End of story.
If anybody can direct me to a source which contradicts that, I would be grateful. Until then I will continue to believe that to be the case.
As for inquire/enquire, I have no idea. I also find myself pausing every time I type a word ending in -ize or -ise. One way or the other used to simply LOOK right, now it rarely does. Elucidation is sought, but spare me the correction on my split infinitive, please!
