Post Where is QF 1

Qantas is searching for there first commercial aircraft that took to the skys in Western Queensland in 1921.. .The World War 1 vintage Avro 504K started flying for the company carrying pax and mail. It was sold to a Victorian owner in 1926.. .Qantas wants it for a museum in Queensland.

So does anyone know where it is or what happened to it?

Hudson Fysh in his book on QF described setting out from Sydney in 1921. Fysh flew a BE2E and McInnes flew an Avro Dyak.

THe Avro Dyak was an Avro 504 which had been re-engined with a more reliable Dyak engine. I suppose that is the aircraft QF is seeking. It was crashed at Ingham in 1922 I think but was repaired and continued in service till....when?

I think it will be a miracle if it still exists in any form.

Apparently the story is that Qantas wants the plane even if it is in little pieces rusting to bits.. .There has to be some aviation buff out there who has some idea what happened to this important piece of aviation history.

Thanks pterodactyl

Wink

Perhaps 'tis a new project for Captain TJ to undertake....searching the outback for a QF relic of little practical use, unaesthetic and heartless...oh wait!...a simple glance at his own reflection would bring that search to fruition! Mind you, the man has had previous outback experience after his appearance on Survivor (at least in an electronic format on the website) last year. Whoever the clever bunny was that hijacked that website could do well to recreate something similar for the amusement of all TJ critics.

And it makes you wonder what will happen to another significant aircraft. VH-ABR the Ansett DC3 which is an original Douglas Commercial, not the C47 military version, which was originally an Australian National Airways aeroplane.

Grogmonster,. .Thanks for the link. I was aware that the Ansett Historical Group operated and maintained VH-ABR during recent years, in fact it never left the Ansett "stable" so to speak. The group is made up of dedicated volunteers who maintain and fly the aircraft and, up to the demise of Ansett, was given some maintenance support. I imagine the ownership of the aircraft remains with the remnants of Ansett and wonder what fate awaits it at the hands of the administrators and creditors.

When I gained command on the DC3 I remember noting that VH-ABR was two years younger than me. It wore many different paint schemes in it's time such as ANA, Ansett- ANA, Airlines of South Australia and Ansett but I don't recall seeing it in Airlines of NSW colours although it most probably was at some stage.
