Thumbs down CASA Cyber Exams

I've just been looking on the internet at the new cyber exams for the commercial licence. They are changing the format from the three exams in one day to a computer based system of seven exams that can be sat over two years. I orginally thought that this would be a good idea giving the student more time to study and understand each section of the exam, that is of course until you look into the cost, I now believe the two years is to allow the student to save enough money to sit the exams.

As I understand there is a one off CASA fee of $50 to sit all of the exams but then on top of that there are delivery fees for each exam to the total cost $553. These delivery fees are said to be access costs??

With the delivery costs this new system gives a cost increase of over $400 to the student. How can this justified when the system has been computerised and therefore I am assuming more cost effective??

I think that all struggling student pilots would agree that this extreme increase cannot be justified and will only deter young pilots from follow their dream. Maybe this is what CASA is aiming for, it would be a lot easier to govern an empty sky!

The site where I found this information is www.aslexam.com

I agree that any extra costs are hard to swallow for any reason and yes cyber exams are supposed to be cheaper. BUT...put it all in perspective, if you are going on to a CPL(A) you will spend $25-30,000 depending on the route you follow.

If as you say the costs are $553 for ALL the exams then this represents about 1.8% of the $30,000 costs.

Okay I'm sure you would rather spend the money on a 3 hour Navex in a C172 but the best way to save money is to study and work hard (be good to your mother). It is easy to blow $500 on a repeated Navex due to lack of preparation. I have seen it occur often. Even a repeated 1 hour sortie is expensive.

In 5 years time when you are flying around in the LHS of a twin or RHS of a regional $553 will seem VERY insignificant.

Stick with it, good luck.

I agree that in the total scheme of things an extra $400 is not a lot but to a struggling student this could be over two months wages.

Consider it this way, the old system used to cost $150 and the new system will cost a minimum of $553 if you pass all the subjects the first time, this is an increase of over 400%!!!

I understand that the new system must have been expensive to implement but for every student that sits a commercial exam they are making an extra $400. Can this really be justified?

If I was ready to sit my CPL theory last month the exam would have cost me about $150. If I am ready to sit my CPL theory next month it will cost me $550.

How can this increase really be justified???

Icarus2001,

I think the issue here is not the price of the exam it is the exorbitant increase.. .It is all very good and well to say "when" you are flying around in the LH/RH seat - realistically, to an 'almost' Commercial pilot it's "if". . .Saving money by studying hard??? No, studying for this exam now will end up costing me an extra $400. I don't make a habit of repeating a navex but if I had to repeat one, last month I could have afforded to, but now unfortunately from next month onwards that money will be going towards my theory exam.

Yeah matey, you have a definite justifiable gripe there. I have just been informed that my IREX exam will now cost $160 instead of the $50+ if I had sat it this month. Totally unjustifiable and if my experience as a teacher (not in this country or in aviation) is anything to go by it will be even more incentive for the wealthy to buy their exam passes with not a little cheating!! Hope I'm wrong cos I've been up to my eyes in aviation theory for the past year!
