WiFi speed problems

Hello all, this is probably a basic question for everyone in here but I’m getting conflicting answers from our ISP vs what I’m researching.
we have a nighthawk AC1900 router, an Arris Gateway the ISP installed. To the Problem we are getting a double NAT error code on a couple devices and we reset the network the way they told us to and it’s fine for about an hour if that long. When the error is preset speeds are slow and lag is present on most devices. We have 120mbps down and 20mbps up. We have an average of 13 devices connected all are WiFi but an Xbox one that is hard wire. I had the ISP shut off the router capability in the Gateway the first night it was installed and all was good for 4 months then we started getting the error again. I’ve called multiple times and get no where with them. They usually say it’s a configuration problem and that the guy who sets up the gateways is not there. Questions are does this sound like a configuration problem? And should the speed be able to handle 3 streaming and one gaming without problems? Thanks for sticking with me through the long process! Thank you for any advice!!

Yes, it sounds like a config problem. 120Mb should be more than capable of delivering the throughput you mention. The "double NAT" suggests that you have plugged the downstream router via its internet port into the upstream router.

What model of Arris gateway do you have?

Which of the 2 has the internet connection, and how are the 2 devices connected?

Why do you need both?

Not sure exactly about your config, do you have an ISP supplied router and then your own one plugged into that? If so DHCP needs disabling on the gateway one and the gateway IPaddress in yours set to the IP of the ISP one. (plus yours may need a static address. You can't have two devices running DHCP on the same network or it causes all sorts of bother.

We have this kind of setup with the second router as a pure wireless AP, keeps the kids stuff and ours separate, we have anywhere up to 15 devices running at once off a standard 40MB ADSL line without any issues, so 120MB should be plenty!

OK pedantic head on here, I think you mean 120Mbps . MB (uppercase) refers to megabytes and is used to measure the size of a file or an amount of storage space. Network speeds are generally measured in mega bits per second, Mbps the lower case b indicates bits as opposed to the uppercase B which indicates bytes (8 bits = 1 byte).

I will call them again and see what they can do on their end with the configuration I will ask about the DHCP. We have the Gateway and when the double nat error first occurred they said said they would disable the router inside the Gateway. It was good for a couple of moths no lag problems or anything then all the sudden the error started happening again and all kinds of problems are popping up. The Gateway is an Arris MG5225G/NA. I’m curious too if I run a speed test on a hardline connection straight off the Gateway should I be near the 120Mbps? I usually average 20Mbps download and 8 upload. Thanks everyone

OK, so the Arris gateway is a digital TV box, is that right? http://media.datatail.com/docs/specs/140157_en.pdf
So is it the Arris that's connected to the internet? It seems to be a cable modem. Or is it the Netgear (https://www.netgear.com/home/product...rs/R6900P.aspx) that's connected to the internet?
As I said previously, the double NAT error sounds as if both the devices think they are connected to the internet in series.

There's 2 workable scenarios:

A) The device directly connected to the internet (cable / DSL) needs to be configured as a modem only, with no routing or DHCP functionality - and whichever device is downstream should be connected via its WAN port to the upstream device - the downstream device will do all the firewall / routing / DHCP / WIFI.

B) The device connected to the internet does all the firewall / routing & DHCP functionality - and whichever device is downstream should NOT be connected via its WAN port to the upstream device (just via standard Ethernet switch port), and must have it's routing and DHCP functionality disabled.

My own setup is the former - my ISP-supplied wifi cable router is in modem-only mode, and my own Linksys wifi router is connected to it via the WAN port on the Linksys, which does all the wifi, routing & DHCP.

Yes it is the first one. It’s supposed to do everything but I like having access to the router and with their set up they have to do everything. So I asked them to turn the routing off and they did and it worked for a while now the problems are back. As far as connecting the two no ports on the back say anything on the Gateway other than 10/100/1000. I have tried it in all and tested speed with little to no change. I’ve also connected straight to the Gateway and tested speed and get no change. When I was downloading a game a month ago it was faster to use the hotspot on my phone..
