smartphones
I am no expert in these matters, but for those of you about to buy the latest smartphone, may I offer a cautionary tale? I bought an HTC desire Android phone. It is compatible with my 5-year old Audi, but not my wife's 1-year old Golf. Allegedly the iphone 4 has the same problem, but not the Iphone 3. VW has an update costing £270, which I shall not be purchasing! If the Golf had been my normal transport I would have been pretty miffed. Perhaps somebody out there understands the issues?

Agree with Mixture / Mike regarding BB. I used look after the BBs for the guys I work for until we switched to iPhones, using JUST exchange... shudders. I don't see any reason to get one with all the other choice out there.
Android is cool from what I've seen, but IMHO iPhones are REALLY sweet. And mine (3g, 3gs, and several guys at work have 4's that I look after) have been absolutely fine with 0 problems. Yes, itunes is horrible, closed appstore, blah blah but for me that hasn't posed a problem (yet). Mail client is pure win for juggling multiple accounts / inboxes.

I don't understand what all the fuss was about the Blackberry email thing. I was reading my emails on my mobile before the BB even existed. Sure, in the begining I had to request my emails as and when, but I'm pretty sure I still had a phone which would collect them at any interval I specified prior to BBs coming on the scene. Not quite the same as push, agreed, but hardly different enough to make the BB email thing the phenomenom most seem to think it was. Maybe I'm missing some important difference or maybe I'm just inquisitive enough to have discovered the possibility of pocket email long before it was sold as a feature.

I switched from a 'Berry' to an iPhone 3gs about nine months ago and I regretted it almost immediately. I'm stuck on an 18 month contract and am counting down the days until I can get rid of the thing. Compared to a BB Its more of a toy than a tool, you have to buy an add on or forward plan ahead if you hope to have enough power for a long day, it's a pretty little gadget but a crap phone in my opinion. I detested the battles with iTunes so much that I no longer even try to put music on the thing, I don't like the 'restricted' blue tooth functionality and in fact the number of things I dislike about it far outweigh the number of things I like about it.
Having said that, my kids think its "cool" but see my earlier comment about it being more of a toy.....
