Android is cool from what I've seen, but IMHO iPhones are REALLY sweet. And mine (3g, 3gs, and several guys at work have 4's that I look after) have been absolutely fine with 0 problems. Yes, itunes is horrible, closed appstore, blah blah but for me that hasn't posed a problem (yet). Mail client is pure win for juggling multiple accounts / inboxes.
The default mail app on my Android was fine for my accounts (a couple gmail accounts and an imap account with my university), but there's a third-party app called K-9 Mail that I use which is quite excellent, especially with multiple accounts. (I'm not affiliated with them--we just both like anthropomorphic robotic dogs from campy British science fiction shows. )
