Angry Just When I Thought AOL Could NOT Get Any Worse.......

Yes, just when I thought that AOL could NOT possibly get any worse??????

They have had this idle timer for a while now, IF you are idle for about 20 minutes you get a message and a chime, you must respond or they disconnect you, even on unlimited plan as I am, I could live with that even though I do not like it.

Now they have changed it, they still call it an idle timer, still says "you have been idle for some time, do you wish to stay on line?", but it comes about EVERY 20 minutes, even when you are actively on line, NOT idle..........

They say they cannot alter it so I told them I will get a new ISP.

Is it the same elsewhere in the World now with AOL??????

I had AOL in my computer for one week and coudn't get it out quick enough.

I objected to the way that it took over every aspect of my internet activity including e-mail.

You have my sympathy.

No probs. with AOL here lame. It stays on line for as long as I want and only throws up a message if left idle for about 15 mins.
If you ignore the message it will disconnect about 5 mins later.

FWIW I've also got an 'ordinary' ISP on this computor and they both work well and completely independant of each other.

gas path,

Thank you, that is what I wanted to know.

That is how it was here, but now, although they still call it an idle timer, and the message still says "you have been idle for some time..." it comes up every 30 minutes or so, EVEN if you are using it constantly, that is you are NOT idle at all?

Best regards,

"lame"

No problem with my AOL. I have other ISPs on this computer, and they work fine, although AOL is much faster.
A question; Why do you want to stay on line if you have been idle for 20 minutes? Isn't it better to disconnect, and then connect again when ready?

Airclues,

Did you read what I said?????

It used to be that you got this message every 20-30 minutes IF you were idle, and you had to respond or be disconnected. We do NOT have timed local calls in Australia so I can stay on line all day for no extra cost, but each time I log on costs a local call, so once I am on line on an unlimited plan it costs me NOTHING to stay on all day? As I said I could live with this idle timer, although I do not like it.....

NOW though you get this same message exactly EVERY 20-30 minutes that you are on line, EVEN IF you are using the computer on line CONSTANTLY, that is NOT idle at all?

At the very least they should now call it something else, it is NOT an idle timer any longer, it is also I believe a breach of contract, the idle timer is in the contract OR a total time of 4 hours continuous on line, but this having to respond EVERY 20-30 minutes when not idle is NOT.........

Best regards,

"lame"

Why don't you open Outlook Express and set it to check for mail every 5 minutes or so, this will keep you connection active.

I have to do this with BT Openworld to keep a 24 hour connection and also to keep the USB modem awake.

Yes, I did hear what you said. I was refering to the fact that you did not like the 20 minute idle warning. However, I didn't realise that you have to pay for a local call in Oz, and can see your reasoning Here in the UK the call is paid for by AOL. I fully agree that to get a warning when you have been active is annoying, and certainly doesn't happen here.
I think that some of the connection problems with most of the 'unlimited use' ISPs in the UK is caused by people who leave their computers connected when not in use. Just because somethimg is free doesn't mean that we have to waste it. Hotels provide an unlimited supply of hot water. If we were to leave the shower running all day, the hotels costs, and therefore the rack rates would increase.
Getting back to your original question, I have been with AOL now for two months and am very happy with them. I have several other ISPs, and AOL is the fastest, and most reliable of them all.

Thank you, just to clarify a couple of things.

AOL (here anyway) does NOT use outlook express, you use their own mail software, and that would only get around the true idle timer anyway, NOT this new one?

Here you have to pay for every local call, about 20-25 cents, but then not timed, so once you are on line it is cheaper to stay on than to log off and back on later....

Just for info, do NOT appear to be getting the message today when not idle, hopefully they have rectified it?

In fact, there is a way to use Outlook Express program (or many other e-mail programs)with AOL however you need to download a small program called eNetBot to do it - http://www.enetbot.com
It is shareware (less than 20US)and you can try it for 30 days.
I use it all the time on both my office computer for personal email (via LAN) and also on my laptop for business and personal mail (setting up multiple accounts through OE)when travelling. Simply dial-up with AOL program (no getting around this!) and then start Outlook Express. Works very well.

Check out their link above and see if its any use to you.

Best!

lame I had a similar problem with AOL...Really pi$$ed me off when I was playing games online and the thing would switch to windows and that stupid idle timer makes its noise...
It would also do it while I was using an internet browswe, as in your case...Changing ISPs was the only solution I could come up with.

Now I am with OzeMail with a 12 mth contract, 25 dollars a month, first three months free, no time limits, no idle disconnects, good speeds.....Im happy !!

VH_KAM,

Thank you for that, as I said I think they have stopped doing it now, haven't had it today, been on line and using (not idle) for many hours, I will check out Ozemail though, thanks.

Red face

Haven't really got any probs with my AOL...just happy not to be receiving the hugh phone bills I was before!!!

But does it "throw" you out every now and then, losing it's connection ?
Or is it just my settings!!!

I am on AOL UK Unlimited package - AOL 6 etc. and I only get an 'idle chime' if I havent been using it - I can stay on for hours and get no '20 minute' warning or warnings of any kind!

Yes, as I said, mine is like that again NOW.

After several phones calls, eventually some operations manager or someone sorted it out.
