MotiveDirectory

Every time I switch on my computer, I get a message that "MotiveDirectory has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL and will close".

Having pressed the OK button everything seems to continue as normal. I thought that it was something to do with my BT Broadband connection as it only started to occur after I installed Broadband, but I uninstalled that and it still occurred.

I have found out that MotiveDirectory is located in CProgram Files\Motive\AsstCommon, but, as with so much that goes on inside this machine, haven't the faintest idea what it does! Anyone got any ideas as to what the program does (and so what I am missing by having to close it every time I switch on) and how I might stop it causing this error (short of re-installing Windows - if that would work)?

Machine details:
Windows ME
2GHz Athlon
512MB RAM
60Gb hard drive.

A google search suggests that a) it was installed by the BT Openworld and b) it causes people problems. It's part of their help system, apparently!

See, for example, this discussion

If it's their software, then i'd ring their technical support and get them to sort it. Remind them to not install stuff without asking while you're at it...

If you can boot into Safe Mode, go to Start >> Programs >> Startup and see if there is any thing that references Motive in there. If there is, remove it and try to boot normally into Windows.

If not, from Safe Mode, uninstall your BT Software.

Another option: You could use Regedit to delete all references to the files in that directory. (That is only an option for advanced computer users.) Then see if you can still log on to the net and not have the error on bootup.

thanks for that link - hmmm...........not impressed. I've left a question with the Broadband help lot to see what they come up with.

One minute later.... message from the help desk apparently asking for more info; as soon as I try to open it to see what they want, I get a Visual Basic script error and the message disappears! AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!

thanks for your suggestion - I uninstalled and re-installed BT Broadband, although not in safe mode, and the problem came back. Don't fancy rummaging around in the registry - I don't regard myself as an advanced user, just as someone with plenty of experience of messing it up!

Response from BT Broadband - apparently the program is part of their 'live chat' help desk system; without it you can't talk to the help desk. So I'll leave it and just click on OK everytime I switch on! Apparently they are aware of this problem and are working on a fix.

Don't think I'll hold my breath, though.

But if you removed it, you would not need their help desk.

After all, their help desk is causing your problem.

Good point Richard, but I might have another, completely separate, problem that would benefit from their advice.

I've also just realised something - when I switched on this morning I didn't get that message, at least, I don't remember closing it down. Hmm.............

Just keep an eye on it and see if you can figure out which combination of programs cause the problem.

If it happens again, I will investigate further.

However, as I suspected yesterday, it isn't occurring any more and that seems to coincide with an automatic update from BTBroadband which happened late Wednesday.

What a coincidence! (or should that be: what, a coincidence?)
