thanks for that link - hmmm...........not impressed. I've left a question with the Broadband help lot to see what they come up with.
One minute later.... message from the help desk apparently asking for more info; as soon as I try to open it to see what they want, I get a Visual Basic script error and the message disappears! AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!

thanks for your suggestion - I uninstalled and re-installed BT Broadband, although not in safe mode, and the problem came back. Don't fancy rummaging around in the registry - I don't regard myself as an advanced user, just as someone with plenty of experience of messing it up!
