AO is DEAD - Hot of the Press

Now QF long hauls crew have a lower pay structure!!!
The following media release has just been issued.
QANTAS GROUP INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS
MELBOURNE, 11 April 2006: The Qantas Group today took a major step in its
two-brand strategy, with the announcement of Jetstar's proposed
international route network* from November 2006.
The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said as part of the
strategy to focus on two strong brands ? Qantas and Jetstar ? the
Australian Airlines brand would cease to exist from July 2006.
Mr Dixon said Australian Airlines staff would operate services under the
Qantas brand. (This is called a wet lease operation in the aviation
industry.)
"From a customer perspective, these flights will be like all other Qantas
international services. They will have Qantas flight numbers, aircraft will
be branded in Qantas livery and crew in Qantas uniforms will provide Qantas
inflight product," he said.
"Australian Airlines has done an outstanding job over the past few years,
but we are determined to take full advantage of Jetstar's success, with its
highly competitive cost structure and service standards."
Mr Dixon said that Jetstar had created 1,300 new jobs since it commenced
flying.
"A further 550 new positions will be created by mid 2007 for its
international operations," he said.
"We are creating two distinct and viable flying businesses in what remains
a very difficult operating environment of continuing record high fuel
prices.
"Jetstar will be grown aggressively over the next three years while we
continue to expand Qantas' international operations.
"The result will be two separate, competitive brands, with Qantas targeting
premium business and leisure passengers and Jetstar concentrating primarily
on leisure markets.
"This is a very positive development that will boost Australian tourism at
the same time as enabling the Qantas Group to grow."
Mr Dixon said the changes announced today would see:
· Australian Airlines aircraft and crew continuing to operate from the
Cairns base under the new arrangements;
· Cairns remain a major hub for Qantas international services, with 49
return flights per week;
· the establishment of new Japan routes for the Qantas Group, with
Jetstar flying daily Sydney-Osaka and Osaka-Brisbane-Sydney services;
· Jetstar flying to new destinations for the Qantas Group in Vietnam
(Ho Chi Minh City) and Thailand (Phuket); and
· Group services to Honolulu increase to eight flights a week, with
Jetstar offering three per week from Sydney and two per week from Melbourne
in addition to Qantas' three weekly Sydney-Honolulu flights.
Mr Dixon said that from 1 July, around 40 Australian Airlines cabin crew
positions would be lost progressively, with no compulsory redundancies
expected.
"Around 370 Australian Airlines positions will remain in Cairns, in
addition to Jetstar's own Cairns base, which is expected to grow," he said.
Mr Dixon said from July:
· Qantas' thrice-weekly Adelaide-Darwin-Singapore A330-300 services
would operate non-stop between Adelaide and Singapore;
· the five services operated each week by Australian Airlines between
Cairns and Singapore would be operated by Qantas via Darwin;
· Australian Airlines' four weekly Cairns-Gold Coast services would
cease, with a new daily Qantas international flight linking Brisbane and
Cairns to cater for the inbound tourism market, particularly from Japan;
and
· Australian Airlines' current twice-weekly Cairns-Hong Kong and four
weekly Cairns-Sydney services would cease.
Qantas will continue to provide:
· double daily flights between Cairns and Tokyo;
· daily flights between Cairns and each of the Japanese cities of
Nagoya and Osaka;
· a daily international flight between Cairns and Sydney, to cater for
the inbound tourism market, particularly from Japan; and
· a total of seven services per week to Bali from Sydney, Melbourne and
Perth, with Sydney and Melbourne flights to progressively transition to
Jetstar.
Mr Dixon said Jetstar's long-haul services would complement Qantas'
international network and provide customers with low fare, direct flights
between Australia and a range of emerging and established holiday
destinations.
He said Jetstar's proposed route network included six destinations in Asia
and the Pacific ? Bangkok, Phuket, Osaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Bali and
Honolulu ? operated by two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
"The network will ultimately provide more services to Asia and the Pacific
before expanding with second stage flying to Europe and other destinations.
"The Jetstar fleet will transition to the 311-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner
aircraft ? part of Qantas' $20 billion fleet reinvestment program ? from
August 2008."
Customers affected by these changes will be contacted by Qantas or their
travel agent.

Looks like 'wet lease' crews will be operating to Japan in the near future. Seniority won't get people there. Will be lots of younger and exciteable people going to Honolulu as well.

Crews operating QF branded, registered and colored aircraft on lower wages and conditions seems like a rather large nail in the coffin.

This has a big influence on the seniority debate. What chance if any is there of anyone new coming in on the bottom of the list in the future? Will the bottom third actually ever see a day off they want, let alone a Christmas or New Year?

Why don't we do something about it before the company gets wise and starts offering all those disgruntled and unhappy junior people who have no lifestyle or choice, with no prospect of it ever improving, AO award conditions to then get to fly on the system of roster allocation (and destinations) that they have in Cairns. For some, the choice of lower conditions for an improvement in lifestyle may be too tempting.

Action needs to be taken now before this starts to happen. If allowed to eventuate, the coffin for the rest of us becomes well and truly sealed.

Attention All Australian Airlines Cabin Crew

Sad Day for Australian Airlines

This morning the FAAA was briefed by Senior Qantas and Australian Airlines management about the Media Release dealing with Qantas’ two brand strategy.

Geoff Dixon, the Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, said that as part of the two strong brands – Qantas and Jetstar, the Australian Airlines Brand will cease to exist from July 2006.

Essentially, Australian Airlines cabin crew will continue to operate services under the Qantas brand from the Cairns Base. There will be a closing of the Australian Airlines office in Sydney as such, with significant job losses. It is hoped that some of these staff can be integrated into other jobs in the Qantas Group.

Australian Airlines cabin crew will be trained in the Qantas, Economy Class Product and the International Business Class product. The 767’s that AO currently operate will be reconfigured 25 Business Class and 204 Economy Class seats with the Qantas branding.

Product training will commence for Australian Airlines cabin crew during the May and June Rosters. New Qantas Uniforms will be issued to crew during the training period.

Essentially, the current route structure will remain in place with some changes being announced in the media releases.

It is clear that the Jetstar model is one that will be grown aggressively over the next two to three years. The network is planned to ultimately provide more services to Asia and the Pacific before expanding with second stage flying to Europe and other destinations.

Whilst it is welcome news that there will be no compulsory redundancies for Australian Airlines cabin crew, we will continue to discuss the ongoing viability of the base in Cairns and explore all options available to our members in Australian Airlines in the longer term.

Huh?

Wooaaahh there boys....
Yes it may be welcome news that no AO crew will face CR however have you considered just a little bit what this means for QF cabin crew?
Hells bells, you don't have to be Einstein to see what this means.
Basically it's an introduction of cheaper pay rates for LH cabin crew.
Just watch the transmission of business to CNS base now:

PAX/CNS/SYD
SYD/SIN
SIN/SYD
SYD/HNL
HNL/SYD
PAX/SYD/CNS

Warning to FAAA - you had better do something now guys!
All hell is about to let loose, or have you got other things to do?

QFCSM

Interesting, that you are giving warnings to anyone Qfcsm....... you were 1 of the brain trust in here that was opposing initiatives of the FAAA like the JFK dispensation, even though the FAAA repeatedly indicated that flexibility was essential if L/H crew were to be protected.

So don't bother giving warnings. It's about time people like you took responsibility for the consequences of your actions.

I wonder if you will accept a 45% pay cut and a cut to a whole host of other conditions to save L/H flying from going to other much cheaper Qantas Group crew?

Perhaps people like you and lower lobe for example will now understand that there will be serious consequences if we do not confront the realities around us.

Also those of you that voted for Howard last time around...... welcome to the consequences.

Ahhhhh yes speed bird but those people were "property investors" they also had "shares" they considered themselves entrepreneurs and they forgot they were salaried employees.
I still meet people that admit to voting "liberal" they honestly think they are in the big league!
They will also be the first to blame others.........
Glad to see that Eden is his usual calm self!

Feel safe in the faaa's hands

Ahh the faaa brains trust in the form of plagiarism99 is back. You bring up the issue of the JFK dispensation again…GOOD

It was you I believe that either did not understand or did not want to understand that the AEC carries out elections on behalf of unions.

Either …

You did not know

Or you did not want to know

Or you did not want anyone else to know…..

About the AEC holding elections, it is amazing the number of crew that are under the false impression that the faaa had the AEC hold the election and therefore that it was above board.

As a result of this example of a glaring or deliberate oversight, it very worrying that the faaa is leading us into battle….

So tell us how the faaa is going to prevent Darth from reducing our conditions…oohhh I’m sorry I forgot, you are going to do it by giving into blackmail and bending over .All that proved to QF is that they have us on the run.The faaa did a lot of good for AO crew didn’t they and that was after they voted to give the company what they wanted in the AO EBA……………..so much for being flexible

There are serious consequences if we do not face the realities around us.................By that you mean rolling over...BRILLIANT

juggling act

And how will the faaa handle this situation?

"Australian Airlines' demise will create an unstable industrial relations situation, with former employees keeping their current conditions - which are pitched between those of Jetstar and Qantas - while being rolled into Qantas's operation."

(quoted from SMH )

Lowerlobe,I too was concerned that the AEC did not handle the vote,I did take the time to make inquiries. I found out the person who counted the vote is a retired CSM, former official and beyond repute. Make the call to the FAAA and you might learn something!

In addition, whilst I am philosophically opposed to the JFK shuttle I completely understood why the FAAA was attempting to work with the company on that and other issues. Obviously our FAAA leadership could see what was heading our way with these IR laws.
Of course your approach might be do everything you can to antagonise our CEO. Please explain? what in the hell would that achieve? It absolutely would ensure that we put ourselves firmly in his sights as an irritation to be dealt with rather than a workforce that they will continue to "work with".
The term "work with" may not be palatable but it is preferable to us marginalising ourselves totally out of the game.

Cart Ex, I am laughing my heart up. You are totally correct. What is funny is that some of us will most likely be made redundant or offered to work for J* intnl for MUCH less. I wonder how those who voted liberal based on their numerous mortgages are going to be able to pay their mortgage. I bet they're not laughing now, but I guarantee they will be the ones who complain the loudest and the most!

Karma - bring it on

FAAA Keep doing what you are doing.
Some people on here believe running around like a bull in a china shop is the best way to react to the current situation.I hope they aren't managing the relax and unwind service .

Hawkeye..

I am well aware of who did the counting and my posts are in no way a slur on him or his integrity. However, counting the forms is only a small part of an honest election.

The main point of having the AEC carry out the election is that you know how many ballots were sent out ….are you getting my drift?

Another problem the faaa would have had with the AEC is that they would not have been allowed to insert their own propaganda. With any referendum there should be at the very least information supporting both a YES and a NO case for members to read but this was not the case.

So my posts have nothing at all to do with the faaa returning officer.

If you read the posts from some here who would appear to be our beloved faaa officials then you would see that they did not seem to think a vote was even necessary at all.

My intention is not to irritate Darth but no one should ever give into blackmail and threats and that is exactly what the company did and how we responded.

You have not read my posts regarding the costings of the shuttle and questioning the reason behind the dispensation.

Rolling over and giving into threats achieves nothing except to show Darth we can be intimidated. Within 7 days of giving dispensation ,the company reduced slips in LHR and SIN and also replaced 6 Australian positions with overseas based crew on the very shuttle in question….I think the company should look at it’s own actions marginalising it’s workforce.

PS Do you think giving pax a s**t load of sugar is a way to get them to relax and unwind..I think the real purpose is to get them to stay awake more likely

Grrr priapism : specific ideas , whinge and moan

After 25+ years of FAAA membership always voting and attendance at meetings when possible, plus standing up at meetings and actively making suggestions etc.....
The answer to your all questions is basically YES.... that's what this forum is for.

Thumbs down another sad day for LH cabin crew

first bkk, akl, lhr, now cns. the perfect setup for darth dixon to have cheaper labor (and expand at any time they wish to do so)now in our own backyard. and not a single complain or opposition from the faaa. if i be based in bne i would be really worried now. LH cabin crew continues to be marginalised without any fight from the three stooges.

who's undermining us this week?

you're right qcc2
who's undermining our working conditions this week??
the BKK base?
the AKL base?
the LHR base?
the new OA guys?
ALL of S/H?
the PER L/H crew who went en masse to S/H?
the MAM casual vermin which appears to be a bottomless pit?

This Faaa's sacred cow -THE CAP - is now an anachronism - the company has effectively by - passed it - having done so this union exec is - in the company's eyes - irrelevant. Manangement has been treating our union as such.
The BIGGEST STRATEGIC error MM etc engaged in was a call to strike action in 2004.
They brought this situation onto themselves. they sent a CLEAR SIGNAL to Dixon that they WERE NOT A NEGOTIABLE UNION.
Dixon heard the message and has been working AROUND US WITH CONTEMPT ever since.
Now all of a sudden we are the Bend Over , Mr Flexible Union.
TOO LITTLE -TOO LATE!
Please - don't start to FALSIFY our history - leave that to the Communications Team.

Sad...sad???!!!
This is the stuff of The Woman's Weekly or No Idea!
Where's the rage?- the faaa indignant anger?
'a sad day '- this from Team Tough??!!
hang on while I get a hanky for our union execs.

Lowerlobe - point taken.
You are correct. The FAAA must ensure that it handles these sort of contentious issues more professionally. By that I mean full transparency. Having the AEC handle the vote on the JFK issue would have ensured that there is no discussion suggesting any underhand or "unusual" outcomes.
Considering past vote outcomes I am surprised that the FAAA has left itself open to this criticism. If any of the officials wonder what that criticism is I suggest when you fly online you ask anyone you fly with how they voted on the JFK issue. I have met only 2 people out of at least 50 I have asked that have said they voted yes. Could be I asked the wrong 50.

Yeah SAD probably isn't the best way to communicate to the memership what is now confronting us all.

Red face hawk eye - 2 of 50 voted yes !

I have had a similar response. With 20/20 hindsight, most of those that voted YES, now say NO. They realize that the "vote" was a waste of time and money but will not admit their mistake and "lemming" like rush. Bit late once you're over the cliff and your future is all but sealed over the next 10 years or even earlier. Qantas L/H does not feature in GD's crystal ball.
