Lookin' out for one another.

The sad news was announced to us at BA a couple days ago that one of our SCCM's had tragically taken her own life while downroute in Mauritius.

The crew discovered her body and were so devastated they were unable to operate the flight home. The flight was cancelled and a relief crew flown out.

This isn't the first suicide amongst BA crew downroute in recent years.

It just sort of hits home that for some this job (especially long haul) can be incredibly lonely and isolating.

Our SCCM's generally mention in our briefings that they are availble 24/7 downroute if we need them for any personal problems.

From now on, i'm gonna start making the same offer to the SCCM on my flight.

Safe flying everyone, look out for each other.

Rest In Peace Tracey, you were a fantastic person to fly with. xx

Unhappy

So far 14 views and no replies to this thread. Not sure whether to be disgusted or appalled....
To you my fellow flying member - love and hugs... just wish I could of sent them to you when you where still with us..
To your grieving family - love and... dispair. Great sadness for your loss but happiness for the joy your loved one brought to you in their life...
Other than that, quite unable to speak so will leave you all with you own thoughts.

This is sad news.

This is the other side of the job that many do not think about.

Longhaul especially can be very lonely with everyone holed up in their rooms saving their allowances and only resurfacing for pickup.

A lesson for us all that a little effort on everyones part can go an long way, and we're all in this business together.

Safe flying all, and don't forget your collegues are only a phone call away. You may not think they want to hear for you, but they may desperately want to call!

Be neither - People respond to tragedy and grief in different ways: Not all feel the need to wear their heart on their sleeve and display their thoughts publicly. A dignified silence does not diminish personal respect for an individual or an event. In fact some would say that it enhances it.

This thread can stand - for now - but I'm deeply uncomfortable with it. This strikes me as a very sad and distressing event for all those involved, including crew, friends and family. I'm not convinced that any of us who did not actually know her should be breast-beating and commenting in public: But, of course, I may be wrong, so we'll leave the thread open for a while and see where it goes.

Oh my goodness!!

The tears welled up in my eyes as I read your post.

I can not put in to words how much of a terrible tragedy this must be for fellow BAers, and this lady's family and friends.

I truly wish her family, friends and colleagues all the love and support in the world at this difficult time.

My love, prayers and thoughts are wish you.

xx

P.S. I absolutely agree with you Tight_slot ... deeply uncomfortable ... I could not put in to words how I felt ... and feel (even though I have not met the people or person/s involved) ... but I just wanted to share my support in some way.

It is true, I never did actually KNOW tracey. I had however, flown with her. So the news still filled me with sadness.

I made this post not just to bring attention to this particular tragic death. As already pointed out, this is by far the first suicide amongst the BA crew community in recent years. But, somehow this one made it to the media.

I guess the main point of me making this post was not to breast-beat or comment in public about this particular case. But more to think about the broader picture. While this particular death affected us within BA, i'm sure other airlines have had similar issues.

It just brings a lot to the surface when we seem to spend so much time on here bickering about the price of eggs (so to speak). Slinging mud at others, or even people within our own community.

This post was just to high light that we can all feel a bit lonely in this job. Away for days (weeks) at a time, constantly trying to catch up on lost sleep. Leaving problems at home.

Some of us find it quite easy to open up to 'strangers' we are working with and can talk out our problems freely. Others, may not find it so easy and it may be down to their colleagues to sense that someting 'is not quite right' and to perhaps offer their shoulder if needed.

Sorry if this post caused any offence to anyone.

Keeps

No offence taken, and I believe none was intended. I just think that this is something that we need to be very careful with, that's all. Thanks keeperboy for clarifying.

Keeperboy I agree with you totally. This is an aspect that some people don't know or forget about. I used to feel very lonely when I was flying long haul (not drinking alcohol was the reason number one, it was more difficult to socialise). And when I got "harrassed" during a week long trip in the Dominican Republic, I couldn'tfind anybody to talk to for days (SCCM included). I ended up on my own, in my room, too scared to come out for days. Terrible.
I have to say it got much better when I finally started flying short haul.

In all these years I have witnessed fellow crew members breaking down, bursting into tears for this and that reason downroute, and I have to say that when I had a HUGE problem myself during a 2 night-stop last november, both Captain and SCCM were so good, spending all the time necessary to make me feel better and making sure I was REALLY ok to fly back.

I want to say it here to all EF LGW cabin/flight crew who know who I am - I will always be available when on a trip, both on the plane and at destination. If you have a problem and need somebody to talk to anytime, day or night, please do approach me. I am a good listener and have been through the wars (winning!!) myself. I know how it feels!!!

Keeperboy your message, I think, is very important, and even more vital for LH crew. Guys, let's look after each other.

All my sympathy to everybody who knew that poor girl.

I would like to echo the sentiments in previous posts. Also would like to say that we all do this job because of our abilty to be understanding, friendly and empathic to the hundreds of strangers we meet every day, lets remember to extend these traits to the crew we work with too.

Fly safe guys and gals,

Jet.
