Enjoy EF LGW, I have a lot of friends there. But the merger is only talk at the moment, nothing has been confirmed, lots of gossip regarding it, I have heard that EF crew think they are getting First class training from SEP to support it, this is funny as Im WW LGW and I still dont have my First training after two years! If you do get offered LHR EF in the mean time then I risk getting shot down by saying take it and run....much better conditions on the NSP BA main contract which does not exist in EF LGW!

Hi Tad,
Did you apply for LGW or was it offered to you.
I am starting 15AUG and have been told LHR which is what I applied for and would pref.
Have been advised that I will be employed for LHR with the possibility that I may be required for LGW.

I am not cabin crew, but was an FO at EF LGW until a year and a half ago.

Short Haul at LGW used to be called EOG (European Operations at Gatwick), and operated under a different AOC to LHR. As part of a BA efficiency drive, SH LGW was brought under the same AOC as LHR, and consequently, the cabin crew had to become mainline crew. So in name, yes they are mainline. However, this does not mean they can transfer back and forth as they like.

I know people who have worked at SH LGW for the past five years or so. They wish to transfer to LHR and are on the list. However, when (if) they do finally transfer, their seniority will below that of every single new recruit that has gone to LHR since they joined the company! Basically if you transfer from SH LGW to LHR, you keep your date of joining (for staff travel purposes), but you do not retain your seniority for all other purposes.

At the same time as EOG became mainline, my understanding is that it was decided that all future cabin crew recruitment would take place through SH LGW. Then people could transfer to LHR as and when required, and keep their position in seniority because there would be no further new recruits into LHR. However, the freeze on recruitment which was left a bit too long, has meant that training cannot cope with so many courses in and out of LGW, and so recruitment is taking place directly to all areas. And so the old problem of seniority arises...

Long Haul Gatwick is a different kettle of fish. You are properly mainline then, and you retain your seniority when transfering to LHR. The rumours of the merging of short haul and long haul Gatwick are going strong at the moment. In fact I also heard a rumour that LH Gatwick crews are being given just six month initial contracts, so that the ability to transfer to LHR is then BA's decision rather than the employee's. ie at the end of the 6 months the contract can be renewed for Gatwick or Heathrow, as BA sees fit. Not sure I believe this rumour though...

If you want my advice, avoid all the hassle, and go direct to LHR if you get the chance. The waiting list for crews to transfer from SH Gatwick to Heathrow is a long one, and if the merging of SH and LH Gatwick crews occurs, they may never get the chance to transfer to Heathrow.

Finally, SH Gatwick have very few night stops but many night flights. One of my friends who has been there for 5 years, gets one or two night stops a month (and that is bidding for them, and she is pretty senior). Fewer night stops equates to less allowances... LHR allowances are apparently much better (although I know very little about their structure).

Hope this helps.

EuroLGW is definitely NOT the same contract as the other fleets. The allowance structure and agreements are completely different and pretty much everyone at LGW EF is trying to transfer to LHR.

Allowances at LGW are much lower than at LHR and the roster involves a lot more long days and doubles. However, EF LGW is a fun fleet and appears to be more laid back than LHR.

Personnally though, for financial reasons I'd go for LHR.

BA LGW EF

Hey Tad!
I was in the same position as you a few months ago so know how you feel. I have been online at LGW for about a month now and am having a blast here. It is true that the money is better at LHR but personally having flown out of LHR with my last carrier I much prefer LGW. No waiting around on the aircraft waiting to cross run ways or waiting for stands etc.
My roster is pretty good, for my July roster I bid for certain night stops and have been given 5 trips and 11 days off.
The work onboard is fairly easy and the crews are incredibly nice.
The talk of one fleet is pretty much on everyones lips these days. I just flew with a girl who is LGW WW and she said that most people at WW want to go to one fleet as they can transfer to LHR or be given severance or early retirment. Have heard soo many rumours about when it may go ahead but the most common one is that we will recieve one fleet trip by trip.
Would love to hear how you're getting on once you start training, send me a pm and I can send you a copy of my roster if you like. Take care matey!

I believe your friend doesn't know how to bid.
I have been here for a year and my roster couldn't be better. I have all the trips I have asked for. All night stops around europe for tjhe whole month, with the exclusion of two turnaround flights (there&back) which, after being away for so long are very welcome.
Many night flights?? NOPE.
We only have 6 night flights a week, 3 are to OTP for sure and 3 I think to Sofia. And it's only for a few months during the summer. Last summer we had 6 night flights a week for ATH and, with all the crews we have, I ended up doing only one (which I got called out for).

We do have late finishes, (I think the latest is a NAP flight landing just before 1am) but they work fine for people who hate the early morning starts.

One thing is for sure, money isn't the same as LHR but man, the atmosphere on board is definitely different. Sorry, but most people at LHR do it for the money. Who chooses to come AND stay here does it for other reasons!!!

We also do work more (I did over 200hrs in may) but overtime pays you back a bit!
Also we have some nice layovers (two nights and a clear day) in italy, switzerland, scotland and germany, which are quite popular.

My advice to anyone considering to join BA is please do not listen to rumours. There are so many people who have been in the business for too long and get bitchy and rant about anything.
EF LGW might not be "as good" as LHR for money, but I promise you we are a great bunch of people, we all work to have a pleasant time (and passengers notice it and compare!) we take very good care of each other (for example for Staff travel..)and ANYWAY despite all the problems we have I stress that we're better off than any other airline in the UK.

Try to work charter for 2 years in the UK and then join EF LGW......I am still thanking my lucky star!!!

So TAD.....welcome on board!!!!!!!!!

xxx
FBW

PS:Tofster...glad you're getting on well honey!!!!

Tad

I've been at EFLGW for nearly 8 yrs now and I've had a fantastic time.

I've had the chance to transfer many times to EFLHR but when you get a bit older you soon realise that money does not make you happy and if it isn't broken...why try to fix it?

It's witout doubt the most friendly base with the youngest crew and with the best social life both in and out of work. If you ask anyone who has worked here you will get the same response as well.

You will work hard, but that's the same wherever you go in one way or another.

Promotion opportunities at EFLGW come up very quickly usually as well so there are opportunities to increase your wage packet if you work hard and keep your nose clean.

I'm also a trainer at EFLGW and I've seen the board and know all 3 of your trainers and know you are going to have a great laugh. Make no mistake though it will be tough and relax or take your foot off the gas too soon and you'll find yourself one step from the door (it's a lot tougher now than it used to be!).

As for the midfleet thing, it's vital it happens basically if we are to become seriously profitable at LGW. I can tell you that the company has spent plenty of cash on this project already and employed a dedicated person to oversee it, which shows how serious they are about it.

One union is for it, the other is opposing it. But at the end of the day as long as fortress LHR is protected. I think they will have to cave in or the company will turn their cost cutting guns on LHR sooner than the crew there would like.

Lastly don't forget Mr Walsh is joining us and he's going to be looking for a cost cutting victory at the start of his BA career, this would be a nice little feather in his cap if he saves the company £12 million a year in his first 6 months.

That will also mean more cash for LGW crew, so if you ask me (this is all my opinion) I reckon it will happen one way or another.

Good luck anyway and enjoy the course and your job and I look forward to seeing you on line

LGW OneFleet is still a very, very, very long way off. Formal negotiations haven't even started yet and this proposal - and that's all it is, a proposal that Joy Hordern would like to discuss - was tabled almost exactly one year ago.

Granted, it or something similar, will need to happen at some point in order for LGW to start making money. As for the union situation: Cabin Crew 89 have been very quiet about this proposal but no doubt, being BA's little drone, it will roll over and accept ANYTHING that the company offers (but who knows? By the time that these negotiations begin/finish Cabin Crew 89 might have been absorbed into BASSA through the T&GWU/Amicus merger. That's how long things take in this company). BASSA on the other hand is not opposed to OneFleet but is quite rightly very wary of anything that this company proposes. And as a responsible union it will examine the impacts, both positive and negative, long and short-term, on our flying community as a WHOLE in both LHR and LGW. As for BASSA 'caving-in' - I think not.

Now, as for the man who is about to take over the helms of 'Skippy', I think that, yes, he will come to the crew community for cost-cutting wins (i.e. slightly higher productivity with regards to working; little agreement changes re: Terminal 5; mixed flying at LHR etc) BUT nowhere near as much as what people think/would like to think. The very same rumours were doing the rounds just before 'Skippy' took over with regards to the changes that he implemented at Ansett and Cathay Pacific. And lets face it: if they hadn't attempted to take MAJOR chunks of cost out of the crew community under 'Future Size and Shape' I seriously doubt that they will be trying to pull anything seriously major now nor at any point in the foreseeable future. And before people start to point-out what went on at Aer Lingus and the changes that Walsh implemented there: the two airlines are VERY different and what applies to one certainly does not apply to the other - you simply can't compare the two. Now, if I was one of the many, many, many arbritary middle-managers at Waterside I would be quaking in my boots. I do truly believe that this is the area where he will (and quite rightly SHOULD) focus his cost-cutting drive on. I think that he will also try it on with the ground and terminal staff. I think that major change is upon them over the next few years with the up-coming move to Terminal 5 and all the different operating procedures that this will entail (i.e. highly automated, no need for legions of ground staff etc). Also, MTS changes (virtual disbandment?) and other ground staff groups being targeted.

Bravo BA Boi,

As a survivor of Aer Lingus you have echoed exactly what I have been telling crew onboard!!! I certainly am not afraid of what may happen to crew in BA, however I do think incentives will be offered to Old Contract crew but whether much happens is another thing. I certainly dont want to be middle managment in Waterside at this moment in time!!!

Boring...boring...boring!!!

Tad welcome on board once again. Enjoy it!!!
EF and WW will happen, but it might take a long time, so if LH is what you're after then you'll do what everybody else does....sticks to BA and waits their turn!!

If you're here for the job itself, and don't care what base you go to, and you're enthusiastic to work for the best Europe based airline (and Nr 5 in the world, according to Skytrax) the that's the attitude we like!!!
Crews at LGW will love you and you'll have a FAB time!!

Take care xxx

FBW (Hello Lily!)

PS: saturday operated 3 sectors, ended up in ABZ for the night, then positioned on sunday night back to LGW....day out in scotland and transport courtesy of EF LGW!!! we do have such trips.....ENJOY!!!

Welcome All to EF LGW

You will have a great time and they do say LGW - Lets Go Wild
LHR - Lets Have Room Service

LGW does have its advantages and disadvantages like every other airline but if you do have a choice between both LGW and LHR think hard about what suits you and what you want. Their is a few points you must consider :

EF LGW is not on a Mainline Contract but on a BA PLC Contract
(Mainline contracts contain ACC NSP which stands for Air Cabin Crew National Sectional Panel which is an agreement between the Unions and BA which cover the movement of cabin crew between all the fleets and bases. However, with the Midfleet planned for LGW as EF LGW is not part of NSP nobody can transfer in and promotion is done with the fleet. Other fleets treat BA EF LGW as outsiders in BA even regional bass and subsidiary's and franchises get treated better. But its the crew who make it and LGW has alot of excellent crew. You get good rosters and bad rosters , easy days and hard days.

If the recruitment team say you can transfer after 6 months to lhr its not true their is only a gentlemans agreement for 54 per year to transfer to EF LHR where you would drop your seniority in the fleet , pay and rank if you are a purser, and the recruitment team must mention to you the differences between ef lhr and ef lgw!

Flyer...where did you get this information??

I agree with the technical details you mentioned, but I disagree with this point.

I have friends in GB, friends in Regional@MAN, friends in CityExpress......I wouldn't like to be in their shoes, really!

Also I'd like to say that we don't treat ourselves as "outsiders"! If it's other bases (LHR, LGW WW) who treat us as outsiders then it's very sad and there's nothing we can do about it. Not our problem anyway!!
We are a great base with lots of great hard-working people and we really go the extra mile for our passengers, and take care of each other as crew. People who moan here soon get transferred to LHR and guess what? they will moan there anyway.

Once a moaner always a moaner....

Cheers!!

Its a known fact for example when BA recently recruited crew for WWLGW about 16 - 18 months ago franchise and subsidiarys they were kind of treated like an internal candidate and were allowed to apply but not Eurofleet LGW . As a crew member on EF LGW , this fleet has always been treated like an outsider in BA by LHR
