EI Cabin Crew STRIKE

1200 Aer Lingus cabin crew to strike.

Aer Lingus cabin crew are to take full strike action on Thursday 23rd October and Monday 27th October in an escalation of their dispute over the company’s refusal to give pay increases due in October 2002 and July 2003.

The pay increases, worth seven per cent in total, have been paid to most Irish workers under two national agreements, the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness (PPF) and Sustaining Progress. But Aer Lingus refuses to pay, even though it is heading for record profits this year, and despite cabin crew agreeing to major productivity changes in exchange for the pay increases.

The strike decision, which was taken by IMPACT’s(tradeunion) cabin crew branch committee, follows five weeks of escalating work-to-rules, during which cabin crew worked to existing agreements. The union said that the regrettable disruption caused by the work-to-rules had shown how much Aer Lingus depends on cabin crew goodwill and flexibility to maintain its schedules.

Aer Lingus refused to compromise in talks and like a school yard bully has withdrawn ALL TRAVEL CONCESSIONS FOR CREW AND FAMILYS.

A Cabin crew official said: “Cabin crew have delivered massive productivity improvements against a background of substantial job losses over the last two years. At the same time they have endured a long-standing pay freeze and have agreed to further productivity changes in exchange for pay increases due over a year ago. We have shown our loyalty and commitment to Aer Lingus. Along with other Aer Lingus staff, cabin crew have saved the company from bankruptcy. Now that they are preparing to announce record profits, it’s time mean-minded management showed the same loyalty and commitment to its staff.”

Cabin crew have agreed to new changes in exchange for the pay increase But the union has accused Aer Lingus of constantly moving the goalposts in discussions on productivity. Its new demands, linked to a 25-minute turnaround for aircraft, would mean a predominantly female workforce working additional flights while losing meal breaks and money.

cabin crew regretted any disruption to passengers and clients of the airline. “Cabin crew are professionals dedicated to the safety and comfort of passengers. They have delivered massive change and, with other airline staff, they have brought Aer Lingus from the brink of bankruptcy to record profits. But every time we get close to agreement they put more demands on the table,”

Productivity contributed by Aer Lingus cabin crew 2001-2003

Reduced numbers of cabin crew on board all flights.

600 cabin crew redundancies

Voluntary lay off of Shannon cabin crew in winter

Loss of annual pay increments worth up to €850 a year, or €8,500 over ten years.

Deferral of 5.5 per cent pay increase under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

Loss of one per cent lump sum due under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

Four per cent PPF pay increase now one year overdue.

Cabin crew now start at 6.00am after two days off.

Cabin crew now finish duty at 11.00pm before two days off

Loss of one day’s annual leave.

Aer Lingus Cabin Crew also:

Routinely work for eight hours in a fortnight for no pay (over and above their contracted 35-hour week).

Work 7.35 hours before a meal break is due.

Often work with under-staffed crew to facilitate the schedule.

Often miss breaks, or take reduced breaks, to facilitate quick turnaround of delayed flights.

We ask for your support.

Many thanks way better!

Good on them!
sounds like the company has been taking them for a long ride!
Time to strike and refuse to return to work until entitlements that are rightfully theirs are given!
Stick to your guns and hit them where it hurts!!!!!!!

To all ALT CCMs.

By going on strike you are playing into WW's hands.

Your work to rule has been causing him massive problems, requiring numerous a/c hire-ins at great expense. You are winning. This is why he has chosen to provoke you by withdrawing your Staff Travel rights at short notice. He wants to bring this to a head as quickly as possible because he's on a loser and he knows it.

Unlike anyone with guts and integrity he will never call your union leaders and ask for a meeting to cut a deal. That would be a loss of face for dear Willy, and he would have to negotiate from a position of weakness...which he hates to do.

My guess is that he hopes the strike will happen, the Labour Court will step in and save his ass by giving him a way out that doesn't involve a humiliating climbdown. Lets face it, he can't lose with the Labour Court...their usual answer to every problem is 50/50...so he walks away with half of what he wanted and his arrogance still intact.

You'd be better off ignoring his provocations and continuing to squeeze on your work to rule. Stick it to the fecker.

My last advice is that if you must strike...don't let the Labour Court shaft you and dig Willy out of his deep hole..be prepared to REJECT the finding if it doesn't suit you.

Good Luck!

The pay rise that cost you money.

A new innovation from Aer Lingus:

THE PAY RISE THAT COSTS YOU MONEY

IMPACT trade union today (Wednesday) accused Aer Lingus management of trying to impose a new concept in Irish workplaces – the pay rise that costs you money.

The union accepts that staff must give productivity changes for a four per cent pay increase, which has been owed to them for over a year. But, at a media briefing in Dublin today, the union said the company wanted to impose changes that would see staff lose more money than they gain from the pay rise.

The company wants to halve plane turnaround times – the time planes spend on the ground between flights - from 50 to 25 minutes. IMPACT does not oppose this in principle but says the company’s approach would do away with existing payments for shortening turnaround times. These are worth €27 for each flight where turnaround is reduced. This means cabin crew would lose more money than they gained from the four per cent increase due in October 2002 under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness (PPF).

Under management proposals, cabin crew would also work more flights and lose meal breaks, which they currently get only after more than seven and a half hours work. All this on top of new productivity measures covering security, the introduction of a pay bar, and other issues, which are agreed or which all sides acknowledge can be agreed.

IMPACT official Christina Carney said: “Aer Lingus is pioneering a new innovation in Irish industrial relations: The pay increase that costs you money. Under these proposals staff are being asked to give up €27 each time they cut turnaround times in exchange for €10 a week for a typical worker. And, although they’re headed for record profits, even that’s not enough for Aer Lingus management. They also want to effectively do away with meal breaks for cabin crew on most routes. And they want staff to work more flights. This would have a serious impact on their working life and their ability to balance work and family commitments.”

Last Sunday (19th October) IMPACT told the Labour Court it was not opposed in principle to the 25-minute turnaround on the roster. The union said this additional demand from management had not surfaced in the Labour Court during the talks on pay and productivity in exchange for the four per cent payment, due in October 2002. It suggested negotiations on how it could reasonably be achieved. Cabin crew are to take full strike action tomorrow (Thursday) and on Monday 27th October.

IMPACT official Christina Carney said: “Cabin crews have been cut by more than a third in two years, while the number of flights has increased. What other group of workers has delivered extra productivity of more than 33% in less than two years? Their efforts, which are unequalled in Irish industry and commerce in recent years, have moved the company from near bankruptcy to record profits. And they have agreed more changes in exchange for their pay increase, which is now more than a year overdue. It’s time management showed its staff a similar level of respect and commitment.”

Way Better, I don't know what your unions official policy on these hire-ins is, but consider this before you condemn them.

Your target in this action is Aer Lingus management. They have invited this response and they are getting what they asked for.

However it would be counter productive for the action to be targetted (intentionally or not) at your passengers. They should not be caught in the crossfire of your dispute.
Your argument is with Willy Walsh, not them.

For that reason you should welcome, indeed invite the arrival of hire-ins. Each one costs him a fortune, and he has chosen to piddle the money away.

If all goes well there will be no disruption to pax. You'll find more support from the public if that is the case.

In short...MAXIMUM COMPETITION from all other carriers should be invited.

Poor poppets. I finish at 2200 with ONE day off and start again at 0600. Hardly arduous.

Hardly a day off either.
Suggest you report back after 25 years of this type of roster if still alive.

Devil

Aer Lingus hired in a Pegasus Boeing 737-800 today for use on a number of routes from Cork. They were to Amsterdam, Paris CDG and Malaga. These three routes are normally flown by a 737-500. Interestingly, the EI822 to Paris CDG went off today with 189 pax aboard. Quite a feat on strike day!

The flights to Heathrow from Cork have been operated by an Air 2000 A320 aircraft.

The Ryanairs looked very full today but they are nearly always pretty hot anyway!

EI Strike

i work in Jersey and the DUB - JER - DUB sectors were affected by the strike. On thursday not one passenger complained about the strike and many of them agreed with the crews after reading newspaper articles.
You all have my support. Good Luck.
