it's very interesting to read stories from a less enthusiastic perspective. i have also read more positive reviews as well. i think it really does come down to whether or not you are suited to the lifestyle and job.

i got my golden call on wednesday and is prepping for all the forms i have to fill out.

i have lived in three different countries on three different continents, not middle east yet, but i dont think many things will surprise me anymore. being a cabin crew like being anything else is a job. im sure there will be really nice moments and bonuses from time to time. it probably sounds very exciting and glam, but most likely when im actually doing it, it's just something you do from day to day.

dont know if the job will suit me, but hell, im going for it. overall the company treats you pretty well with a good pay, sounds better than other companies in this industry.

are the employee benefits really as good as they say on paper?

Well, I just lost a exntremely lengthy post into the PPRuNe wilderness and have no desire to retype for another 30 mins.

Suffice to say reality is somewhere between the glossy promo videos and what Amanda's experience was.

Don't be lazy- know what you need to know, study if need be, and you have no reason to fear briefing. I've never owned 'the book' and don't plan to- all I need is the red manual.

Don't scream and shout to get things done- it's offensive to the locals and you're much better off learning how to play the game here to get anything done. Keep a sense of humour and pick your battles. Not everything is worth getting stressed over.

If something isn't up to standard, do something about it. (Whether it be cleanliness of a vacant room, electrical sfaety standard, item needing maintenance- if you don't ASK, you don't GET.) With 13,000 cabin crew, some things need a bit of initiative on your part. The company doesn't have ESP so you need to tell them if something is broken/needs attention. Sometimes it takes several goes. Remember, there are more than 100 nationalities working together. Communication breakdowns can and do happen, just as they can on board. Follow up and you will be fine.

Your accommodation is FREE. Your utilities are PAID. Unless there is an extreme hazard to your health, count yourself lucky. You are not living in a labourers' accommmodation in Al Quoz. Would I change some things about my apartment if I could? Sure, then again, I could not afford my apartment on my own. So, keep things in perspective. You might have to share a bathroom. Yes, that sucks if you are not used to it. On the other side, you don;t have to share with up to 20 others, as some do. Bonus! Only one other person to worry about... At the end of the day, is it going to kill your life? If there's a problem- man up and talk to the other person about it. If needs be, have a paper cleaning schedule. Sometimes living with other, non-related adults can be a b*tch. Sometimes you have to treat each other like teenagers to get things done. So be it. If it's really bad, do what Amanda did and move out. You are allowed to see a room before you move into it. If something isn't done, call Facilities and ask for it to be done. They will do things, you just have to Ask!

No, it's not all roses and rainbows here, but it's a good deal better if you learn how to deal. I had a few months where things were horrendous and I hated it- but that was down to my perspective and letting myself get into a negative attitude. Suck it up on the bad days- talk to a friend, find someone who's been here a long time. Often 'having a bad day' can make things seem so much worse than they are especially when you are so far from home. It takes a minimum of one year to adjust to living in a new country. I HIGHLY recommend you keep this in mind as an absolute minimum timeline before even thinking about resigning. 9 out of 10 ex EK crew I speak to regret resigning when they did. If you want to resign- sleep on it, don't do anything hasty. Most people say "I wish I'd given it another few months". Remember- if you are completely new to flying, you are not only adjusting to a new country but a new job. In that case, I would say minimum of 18months. It took me at least 1 year to get used to flying alone, not even to say a new country.

Attitude is everything. Have a good one and you will go far here. Of course that's not to say to be a suck-up or a doormat, but as I said pick your battles, learn the 'game' and play it smartly. You'll be fine.

To Amanda

Well Amanda, I used to have a horrible flatmate at my previous airlines, so I understand how you feel. But I always think like this "when life give you lemon, just make your own lemon juice".
I bet you are happy with your life now. Good luck in everything you do.

Emirates

Hello everyone!

Writing here an ex-applier, already working for EK.

I joined the company last month of November, and I have been flying for a while already...

I have read a few post and would like to say: yes, it's not easy to get the job, same as the job is not easy, but it's not impossible either, it can be hard sometimes, difficult passengers and difficult times, but I just can say one thing: I am doing what I dreamt for, and I am so happy to be here working for Emirates.

Just keep trying, and good luck for everyone!

I think the problem is that too many young females obtain the job thinking its all glitz and glamour. They have never had a real job that requires hard work and long hours. That is not to say I doubt anything that has been said is not factual. Why do you think Emirates does so much hiring? It's not only because they grow so quickly, its because they have high turnover.

Heyy,

Do you work for Emirates?

I recently had my FI in Toronto about 4 weeks ago and am still in AIP...

How long did it take for your application to proceed.....the wait is really killing me.

Hi everyone,

Can you please guys tell me how you understand this statement?

"Candidates are short-listed and undergo an initial screening. Many will then be asked to participate in assessment exercises. Finally, those identified as having potential will be called for an interview. Candidates who fail to make it through the initial screening process may reapply after six months; those who are not successful*after the interview may reapply after one year."

It is not that clear to me... What do they call "initial screening"? Do they refer to the OD? AD? Or both?
For sure we must stand by for a whole year if not successful at the FI but what about OD&AD? Some say we can attend as many OD as we wish but others would say there are six months wait in btw?!

Thanks!

From some time ago they are making all people, both from ODs and ADs wait for six months before reapplying.

online application...

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question I have in mind, My FI was 28th March in Auckland, I applied online before the open day and gave my application number to the recruiter during my FI.

I did not go home and re-apply again since I already applied before the open day.

I have been reading on the forum for a while now and everyone seem to have AIP Applied, etc etc on their status.

All I have is "application has been fully completed" on Job's application list and on the status say's advert closed.

The question is...did I miss out on something? or some people do not get the AIP or Applied status? Or do I have to apply again?

I'd be much appreciated if someone would be able to help out

And on top of all.....Good Luck everyone! all the best !!

Thanks PrimaveraCero,

But how would they track and check you when you attend an OD? There is no way unless you go through to AD then they check at that point?
We're so numerous at open days...

6 months wait

U have been with me at the BNE open day this march. I had Helena and she told me that I needed to wait until June to come back.

She as well told me that she won't register me for being at the OD that day, because then I have to wait 6 months from March.

One thing which is standing out in my knd is that she told me "are you sure you were here on January this year?" as like she wanted me to say "oh no sorry it's a mistake, I was here January 2010"

Should have said that and take my chances from that lol

Oh well....I just don't want to kill my chances for next OD....4th rejection might just kill me on the spot lol.

Hey....I have question everyone...
why do some people get rejected after having AIP?
It has been 4 weeks since my interview, and for 2 weeks I have had AIP
I am very nervous - can't concentrate on anything, and very stressed out about this.
I feel like my whole life has come to a stand still cause I cannot plan for anything because if I got this job then my life would take a 360.

On the other hand I'm glad to say I got an invite for next Sunday 22 AD in Buenos Aires!!! Yay!!!
