Maybe it depends on who is working with your file. And I think how you look on your professional full lenght and passport photos is important. On my passport photos I was wearing mascara and a little eyeliner, but no lipstick and blusher. My skin is very fair, so I think I looked like a ghost. Or maybe you are just really really smoking hot?

Yep girls have it harder.. just looking at the grooming standards.. mascara, foundation and lipstick must be worn AT ALL TIMES! Takes a lot of dedication!

I would go if I were you...because it is completely clear that you followed their instructions and waited long enough.

Question asked on behalf of a potential CC.... .....Is it possible for Cabin crew to bid for rosters in the same way as the Pilots do? If so, How often on average do you get what you bid for? & Is the pay enough to allow for a standard way of life out there?..... Is it compulsory to speak Arabic?.

Talking OD in San Francisco

To each and every person (esp Mari), thanks loads and loads for relaying such important and pertinent info. This is the first time writing here, but I feel as though I'm equally included in each person's joy, excitement and nervousness -- congrats to many and good luck to others. The power of encouragement is awesome and it truly feels like everyone's so genuinely interested in helping out one another here

Is anyone attending the OD here in San Fran? Also very very curious as to what could be the major criteria for a cut-off at OD? It seems like a lot of people are there but at the end reduced to less than 50%; how can a person try to get past this?

Congrats and good luck to all.

US Recruitment

It is my understanding that on previous US recruitment events almost half were cut after the first morning session. Most due to age...in the US there are a lot of former flight attendants that are in their 40's, 50's and 60's that still want to fly. And, in the US this is not an issue. For EK it is.

Also, dress appropriately...skirt suit (female), hair up in a bun...no open toe shoes...nice conservative closed heel and toe shoes in black or navy to match your suit. Limited conservative jewelry.

Another US point is "weight in proportion to height" in the US you are not allowed to discriminate based on weight....someone can be 5"3 and weigh 165 and still get hired. With EK this is not going to happen.

My friend who went through the process in Miami and is waiting for her date, she said all the women who got called back were a size 8 or smaller. (US size).

The US is different than other countries...but don't expect EK to be required to follow US recruitment standards.

This seemed to be a sticking point for people attending in the US.

For guys, wear a suit and tie, get your hair cut..no hair products. Shine your shoes.... Same deal with height and weight... I have a male friend who will be at the SFO OD.

Hello,

I attended an open day in Houston, US on 6/26/2010 and was eliminated after the group discussion.
However, I received an email from Emirates just a few days ago inviting me to open days in Seattle7/10 or San Francisco 7/17/2010.

So I was wondering if it is okay to attend the upcoming open day since Emirates sent me an invite via email.
I heard from someone that you need to wait at least 6 months to reapply but why do you think ek sent me this invite again?
Do you think it's because Emirates didn't have the time to update my account to input the record of my attendance last month???

My online application still says "under review" when I have been eliminated

Would someone please clarify?

6 month rule

Personally, I would wait six months before re-applying. I think the email you received is system-generated so everyone who applied in the US would get it. The system is not smart enough to know who has applied in the last six months. If you make it further this time, they may find you applied only last month because they would have your resume and photograph from the previous OD on file. This could be grounds for automatic disqualification and could affect your applications in the future.

Having said this, I know of people who made it through without waiting six months, but you need to decide if it's a risk worth taking. Emirates is very strict with its rules and I would imagine they have no tolerance for people who are dishonest. If you're successful, you will be required to sign a declaration stating everything you've disclosed is true and accurate so this is a good test of your honesty.

Dear Usmankh,

thanks for the nice words.

The post above about the "US recruitment" tells the facts. (By the way, I'm a size 6, tall female and I feel like a big cow next to the little Asians... Is it just me or the new-joiners getting younger and younger and thinner and thinner?!)

The first cut:

The good cv and the good first impression is essential.

The crew who I met from your country: surprisingly open minded, cheerful, flexible, smart, confident, easy-going AND professional. Very easy to work with and talk to. (For me. I never had communication problems with Americans or Canadians but I do have with British and Australians.) I met some experienced American crew (United, SouthWest Airlines), so the cabin crew background is an advantage. They are all young and good looking. If you are bilingual or speak another language fluently: great advantage. If you traveled a lot and/or lived abroad (studies, work): great advantage. Boys need to have hair on the head: they don't hire bold guys. (Note: the bold men you see were not bold when they got hired.) The good cv: 2-5 years of customer service experience is ideal. College degree might be a plus (due to the level of education in the US). Your cv should be straight to the point: no need to write many pages. (There is no time to read a roman.) Highlight the significant information. They will not read the rest. Well, and you need a good photo.

I don't have more tips or more experience to share. The rest depends on your luck. You must understand that your luck depends on who else is attending this open day. As I look back it was very easy for me to get in because the other candidates were just sooo weak. The competition is huge nowadays.

All the best!

Dear dv8,

you should tell your friend about pprune and she can read everything and ask anything she wants.

First, she should start with the Emirates career page: you don't need to speak Arabic, only English. She should read the "Requirements" section.

Yes, you can bid for flights like the pilots. (Emirates has the best Cabin Crew Portal I've ever seen. It's fantastic!) There are 7 bidding groups and you are in one of the groups in each month. When you are "top bid", you have the biggest chance to get what you want. (Days off and flights.) If you bid for New York, you might get 2 in that month. When you are lowest bid, you have Reserve which is a whole month at Emirates. (There are no standby duties in the "normal" rosters.) You can also swap flights for other flights or days off. (Note: rosters are extremely tight nowadays, you work up to the limit. It's hard to make big changes due to legality issues.) Do not count on the bidding system if your friend plans to go home regularly. (Except if she's from London: we have hundreds of flights to London every day. I'm more than happy to give mine for a CDG or BKK.) Anyways, there are 2 fleets: the Main Fleet (777, A330, A340 - many destinations) and the A380 fleet (limited number of destinations). You cannot choose between the fleets: the company decides which aircraft type you will be trained on. And you stuck with it for a while...

What does the "standard way of living" mean to your friend?! You don't pay rent, utilities, transportation to and from work. They feed you on the flight, they feed you on the layovers. You can spend your salary on parties, dinners in restaurants, travelling, spa, manicur/pedicur, hairdresser, yoga, clothes, shoes, iphone, laptop etc. AND pay off your loan or pay for your studies. Health insurance is quite good. You can purely live on your Meal Allowances you get on the layovers (in cash), actually. If your friend is from a poor Asian country, she will be able to save 50-90% of her salary. If your friend is from Eastern-Europe, she will be able to save 40-70% of her salary easily. If your friend is from the UK or South-Africa for example, she will be able to save 0-40% of her salary and complaining about the money non-stop. If having a car is part of the "standard" to your friend, then yes, you can allow to have a car in Dubai, cars and gas is very cheap.

The money is not the issue here: your friend has to leave her friends and family. She will be able to go home only 3-4 times a year for short period of time and fight for the seats on the way back. (All flights are full all the time! Especially Australian flights.) She has to live in a muslim country. (If she's muslim it's not an issue of course.) The climate is not always pleasant: it's extremely hot from May till October. (Forget about winter and rain! Except the flooding in January when all the cars and houses are under water...) The work is hard and exhausting: very demanding customers, multicultural crew, very tight rosters with long- and short-haul flights, minimum days off.

Your friend needs to be young, fit and open minded to even think about joining Emirates. Your friend can also google lots of stuff and find some blogs written by Emriates crew (main fleet and 380) and watch some youtube videos (search: "emirates cabin crew graduation"), so she can see what the expectations about the age and look are.

Good luck to your friend to her future plans!

DaniNani,

it's been two weeks. Some people get the Golden Call after 2 weeks, some after 8-9 weeks. Make sure you submitted ALL the required documents and photos, otherwise they won't process your file further.

Are you, guys, told at the Final Interview that you get the answer in 2 weeks or what?! It used to be 6 weeks until the notice so I don't really get all these questions...

Sun822,

go for the OD, invitation is NOT required.

(Why do you, guys, use TEXT SPEECH when the admins remove all those posts?!)
