Hi Welshboy...

The problem with your question is that sometimes it seems as if EVERYONE commutes from Manchester. There are absolutely hundreds of crew who commute down each week and it has gotten to the point where a huge amount of crew (even crew with very high seniority after doing years and years with the company) just dont bother to fly and pay the high car park fees but instead drive down to LHR for every trip.

If I were you coming in as a newby it may be better for you to drive the trip instead of fly!

Well i wouldn't be able to fly as i wouldn't be getting staff travel to begin with? was thinking about driving, but not sure how often i'd be doing it, and do i really want a 3 hour car journey before and after a 12/15 hour flight? I think its probably more practical to move to London!

On worldwide plenty commute. Stay in cheap £25 a night BB before long flights etc. Also, a little bit of using ones brains everything will fall into place.

Thinking of applying to LGW

Hey guys, I'm living in Brighton, currently a student, but hate my degree! I'm nearly 24 and looking for a career change. Have always had the desire to be cabin crew, but never really did anything about it as lived to far away. now im in commuting distance from Gatwick I'm really considering it.

I know it has been asked a thousand times over, but the basic salary seems so o low? is it actually manageable. Ive got bills and living in brighton is expensive business. The 10 grand basic is a mere £3,000 more than I get from my part time job? I know people don't do it for the money, but I need to pay the rent etc?

Do they pay you whilst training also?..... And I realise that looking the part is quite important, will they disregard you instantly for having the odd breakout?!

Also, should I consider the temp long-haul from heathrow? would the brighton to heathrow commute be manageable? i don' drive so the train takes a couple of hours..

Sam,

I've been at LGW for a long time and I still love it! Yes, the basic isn't that great, but you will make up quite a lot in allowances, hourly pay from check-in to check-out, over night allowance, overtime (on long duty days) and commission.

You'll also not pay "normal" taxes on your income, actually, we pay very little tax compared to the "outside" world.

You won't get rich in this job, but you can definately live on it, as long as you don't live the champagne life style...

Give it a go anyway. We're a fun bunch and we do have a laugh. Some people moan, but don't listen to them. There are so many other jobs out there that are a lot worse.

Good luck, and let me know if you need any other help

Gg

Ps. You so get paid for training, they put you in a hotel for the LHR part of training (safety procedures and equipment aka sep). And don't worry too much about appearance. You won't be sacked or grounded for an outbrake.

Hey GG, thanks for your reply..

I don't want to be cheeky and ask how much you earn exactly... and obviously if you've been at LGW a while it would differ, but would a newbie generally take home an extra £500 in allowances each month? Really I need a take home salary in the region of £1,100.. what do you think?

Also in regards to flights from LGW are they just short haul? Im guessing from the other posts that long-haul is from Heathrow only? Whats your typical month like?

Sorry for all the Q's! x

Sam,

Your net pay at LGW will vary between GBP1200 upto GBP1800 a month dependant on your roster. The most I have taken was GBP2200 but that was with other payments which we hopefully wont be getting again very soon, but that is another story.

There are alot of crew at LGW who "commute" from brighton and it is manageable but for an easier life I would definitely recommend getting yourself some wheels.

Single Fleet Gatwick is Longhaul and Shorthaul. You will do both. For shorthaul you will be trained on the Boeing 737 (different variants) and the Airbus 319 (although u also get trained on the 320 and 321 too) For Longhaul you will be trained on the Boeing 777.

If u do a search u will find all the relevant info on destinations etc etc.

thanks for the info. getting a car would be pointless as unfortunately i can't drive! however my bf lives in crawley, so i could consider moving up there...however i would miss brighton!

ive been thinking alot about the temp cont for ww lhr... the money seems better an opportunity to do ww is very tempting? problem now is that i have a holiday booked and payed for middle of july for 2weeks! im guessing lhr would want you on a trainging course at that..... i might just hav to leave my app until they recruit again.

do ba recruit fairly often?

..or of course go up the road to Heathrow.. Golden runways.
You`ll clear more than you expect. Slightly different T&C at LHR to LGW, one being the allowances and days off.

Don't worry it doesn't mean you didn't get it. People on my interview all found out on different days.

Getting Kept On 2

Info for all temporary crew on LHR WW, this is a quote from Mark Hassell, Head of LHR WW and LGW Fleets on our company forum yesterday:

"There are no plans at this time to offer permanent contracts to the team of LHR temporary crew."

Are the calibre of people BA are employing for temp contracts gone right down hill? Honestly, the type of people I have been seeing getting the temp jobs. No way are these people being offered permanent positions. They are simply being used for 11 months.

I haven't started yet, but I know a few people who are about to join who I currently work with. I do not think they should've got the job. They can talk the talk, but definitely can't walk the walk. Big shame.

Grrr ahem!

I would hope that your not taring all temps with the same brush!! People could take offense!

Also are you implying that beacause I applied for the temp position as opposed to the LHR EF perm or LGW SF perm that I was put through a completely different recruitment process?? With a lower quality of candidate being put through??????

I hardly think that BA would activley recruit candidates to work on their line, however temporary, who are below the high standards they usually require.

I don't doubt that there are a FEW bad eggs that get through, this happens in all airlines but please don't imply that people who are giving up a permanent position for the chance to work with BA are of a lower quality that those on a permanent contract!

Apologies for spelling,

Sincerely, Temp LHR candidate starting in JUNE, USED by some hopefully APPRICIATED by others

Flying Boi,

I am a temp and believe it or not the calibre isn't what it used to be. Talk to BA staff and find out yourself. I was actually originally offered Eurofleet but only want to do this for a while anyway.

Good luck and enjoy the training course. LOL. I just finished.

I think its very unfair to say this, BA have a reputation to adhere too. If the standards are "dropping" then surely BA would not want their repuation to be tarnshed.
