A chopper's turbo-shaft exhaust maybe?

Most certainly a helicopter, powered as you suggest, by a turboshaft. this is not the exhaust end though. Currently in service.

A Military attack helicopter? European? The vertical louvers - are they normally there?

Kitbag 18th Nov 2013 12:07

Military attack helicopter?-Yes
European? - Sort of (go East young man)
The vertical louvers - are they normally there?- yes
These louvres, I may have misled you (mainly because I've only just worked out their purpose myself). They are intakes for an engine exhaust system - makes sense to me.

Noyade 18th Nov 2013 18:54

Ahhh.....thanks mate! :)

Took a bit of finding, but I found a 'walkaround' site with the illustration below. But even then I had to increase the contrast to see those louvers. Intriguing!

I'm hoping it's the Mil-28?

No need to hope, it is the Mil 28 attack helicopter.

Couple of clues then.

An armoured close-support aircraft from WWI. According to wiki, over 200 were built and none were lost in combat. Must-a-been tough!

Karlark 20th Nov 2013 01:14

Hi Graeme. Thanks for the clue, the armour confused me.
I think now it is the Junkers J.I:

Hi Karl,

I think that's the Monsted-Vincent Star Flight before it got a bad attack of the wind

Sorry, but it'll have to be an OH if correct as very busy tomorrow!

Karlark 21st Nov 2013 23:46

Yes indeed Trevor, it is the Monsted-Vincent MV-1 Starflight. :ok: Only one produced....

....and in later life flipped over in hurricane winds. She may still be in a warehouse somewhere but ultimate fate unknown.

Open House per SincoTC

Terry Dactil 22nd Nov 2013 03:58

It got clobbered twice.
Obviously it did not have enough "hurricane resistance" in the design :{

This aircraft was at the Wedell-Williams Memorial Aviation Museum at Patterson, La

In 1992 hurricane Andrew wrecked the aircraft.

After the remains of this aircraft were put in a storage hanger, in 2005 the hangar and aircraft were destroyed by hurricane Rita.
from this site with some more photos

Thanks for the link, Terry Dactil! Sounds like it was blown to smithereens on the second go around.

Here is another one for the open house:
