Thanks Graeme. Here is the next one. What engine and what installation?

Lightning Mate 30th Apr 2013 14:34

Good day Mel.

Do I see a gas turbine?

MReyn24050 30th Apr 2013 16:20

Good Afternoon David. The engine is not a Gas turbine

nacluv 30th Apr 2013 16:34

I am seeing that as a Vickers Wellington just after take-off carrying a third Hercules engine in the bomb bay.

For what purpose though, I have no idea.

MReyn24050 30th Apr 2013 16:43

The engine is correct but the airframe is incorrect.

nacluv 30th Apr 2013 16:47

I was just about to add that it is more likely to be a HP Halifax, judging by the shape of the undercarriage doors...

MReyn24050 30th Apr 2013 16:53

You have it. It is indeed a Hercules and Halifax. You have control nacluv.

nacluv 30th Apr 2013 16:56

Thanks, Mel.

I would love to know what that fifth Hercules was doing down there! GINMF in this instance. :( Do you happen to know? Is it as simple as just a means of ferrying spare engines?

Meanwhile, I'll have a look round for another challenge!

MReyn24050 30th Apr 2013 17:29

Nothing exciting Nacluv. Just as you say. The publication from which the photograph came from states that it is a spare engine installed in the bomb bay using the bomb crutches for transportation purposes.

nacluv 30th Apr 2013 17:54

How prosaic! I was hoping for something much more secret squirrel!

I'm running out of time tonight, so I am reluctantly declaring 'open house'. I'll try to find something ASAP but if anyone has one to hand then please be my guest.

Engine is possibly a BMW VI? It looks like a V12 engine. The BMW VI was fitted to the Heinkel 70 although this aircraft does not look like the Heinkel 70.

Powered by a variety of engines Mel, and I'm not entirely sure what the power-plant above is, but the standard was a Napier Lion. Another was the Rolls-Royce Eagle. But no German engines and not a German aircraft mate.

Here's the Napier Lion...

Thanks Graeme.
I think the engine in your challenge photograph is a Rolls-Royce Eagle VII or IX.

Both of these engines together with the Napier Lion was installed in separate versions of the Vickers Vulcan. However I cannot quite get my head around the apparent thickness of the wing that the guy is standing on.

Morning Mel.

This may help mate...

Vickers Vulcan
Forgot to answer that mate. Not a British aircraft.

Cheers.:)

Morning Graeme. VAN BERKEL TYPE W.B. SEAPLANE MONOPLANE or S 3 - Heinkel HE 2 "Hansa" perhaps?

Noyade 2nd May 2013 22:44

Evening Mel.

Some very similar looking machines there! Your Van Berkel is in the right country.

It's Dutch. Very famous manufacturer. But according to Wiki, the only country that used them was Portugal...

Cheers.

Lightning Mate 3rd May 2013 06:14

Fokker T3.

Noyade 3rd May 2013 08:32

Yes, the Fokker T.IIIW. :ok:

Your control.
