JENKINS 28th Jun 2019 13:37

At another West African field each refuel required a large bucket of Avtur to be taken as a sample. Cooking and lighting fuel for someone!

sycamore 28th Jun 2019 13:59

J,yes ,the Ground engineer had a longpole ,hollow for the Herk, which he would decant into large plastic bags, which were left on the scrub (below the aircraft in picture).....they too would have` evaporated` by the time the crew got on board...! ...must have been the `fairies`.....

JENKINS 28th Jun 2019 14:01

Fairies in your background acknowledged, Sycamore. They still pay my pension.

India Four Two 29th Jun 2019 06:20

Hello all,

Sorry I’ve not been paying attention due to helping out at a gliding competition.

Thanks JENKINS for accepting my slightly devious identification. I must read Men At Arms again. A wonderful story. Who could forget Brigadier Ritchie-Hook?

Open House.

Asturias56 29th Jun 2019 07:20

Asturias56 29th Jun 2019 09:16

You said not sensuo stricto Third World.

Depends on your point of view.

Might it be India ?

sycamore 29th Jun 2019 11:15

Guessing that may be an IL-62,so Ukraine or Russia...?

Asturias56 29th Jun 2019 11:24

dook 29th Jun 2019 14:05

It's eluding me, but I have found a photo which might be it.

But it's a Russian site and I don't speak Russian. :(

dook 29th Jun 2019 15:04

sycamore 29th Jun 2019 21:08

Must be back to Russia again....

dook 29th Jun 2019 21:09

It is indeed.

Dora-9 30th Jun 2019 06:16

That white camouflaged Ju 52 complete with a yellow fuselage band would certainly suggest the Eastern Front.

Asturias56 30th Jun 2019 06:26

Is Volgograd - maybe Gumrak (now VOG)?

JENKINS 30th Jun 2019 08:20

Airborne supply of German 6th Army at Stalingrad? JU 52 for Paulus? No idea of any location.

Asturias56 30th Jun 2019 08:32

Gumrak was one of the 7 fields they used and is the only one still in use I believe - which is why I chose it as it has "and interesting history"

dook 30th Jun 2019 08:49

Good morning gentlemen.

This place was held by 5500 Germans for three months under heavy siege from the Russians.

They could only be supplied by air. The only other support they had was from German artillery ten miles away.

Just under a quarter survived.

nvubu 30th Jun 2019 09:21

Kholm Pocket - but wiki stages that the it was too small for aircraft to land.
Flights originated from Pleskau-Sud/Pskov-Sud?

dook 30th Jun 2019 09:47

nvubu strikes with Kholm.

Aircraft did land there before the area shrank, as evidenced by the photograph.

During the conflict some 2,000 sorties were flown - initially by JU-52's and then gliders. The change of approach was forced by a 30% loss rate in aircraft. As the 'kessel' area was compressed because of the intensity of the fighting, the airfield became part of 'no mans' land and each glider landing was greeted by frantic efforts from both sides to retrieve the valuable contents.
You have the thread.

nvubu 30th Jun 2019 12:01

Thanks dook, the give away was the 5500 defenders.

I'm currently sitting at a hockey club where the temperature is close to 30 degrees C. So here's one where the temperature is closer to 30 degrees F.

dook 30th Jun 2019 12:48

All I can establish at the moment is probably the 391st Bomb Group of the 573rd Bomber Squadron.

Europe maybe Belgium or Vitry en Artois France.

nvubu 30th Jun 2019 14:16

We are not in France or Belgium

dook 30th Jun 2019 14:20

RAF Matching ?

nvubu 30th Jun 2019 15:50

Not RAF Matching. Here's another cold picture.

dook 30th Jun 2019 16:26

Are perchance in the USA then ?

nvubu 30th Jun 2019 16:30
