A bit of a fraught atmosphere on WAMkIII these days. Anyway, could the latest challenge be Thurleigh? I once saw some publicity pics that BOAC did with one of their first 747s there.

nvubu 16th Feb 2019 11:37

We'll I thought that would be a hard one to get from that image, and I has quite a few more pictures for it.

Dulles it is. SLB has control.

Apologies,
I indeed forgot to add “if correct”
I knew i was to sleep late this morning so did not wanted to keep everybody waiting.
My sight is about as hazy as the next challenge.
Specsavers?
Pearl?
Or less cognac?

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
Just posting out of fun!

I am afraid Open House again.

Early Thursday morning. I'm actually quite surprised this 80+ year old airfield hasn't appeared on The List yet.

chevvron 16th Feb 2019 12:44

Er Gatwick? (OH if correct)

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 13:10

Nope, not Gatport Airwick. :)

dook 16th Feb 2019 13:19

If I see PAPIs, it's somewhat unusual to have them on both sides of the runway is it not ?

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 13:28

You do see PAPIs on both side. That's not too unusual.

dook 16th Feb 2019 13:33

I'm obviously getting out of touch these days then.

Are we outside the UK ?

minuteman 16th Feb 2019 15:23

I’d hazard a guess at Shannon?....but on closer inspection I’d say not!

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 16:25

Not Shannon. I think we're in the UK, hence my "I can't believe it" as far as the wiki list is concerned.. :)

dook 16th Feb 2019 17:17

I thought it might be Stansted but that isn't 80+ years old.

broadreach 16th Feb 2019 17:23

Could that be Prestwick? The only clue, really, is what looks like a hangar off to port.

dook 16th Feb 2019 17:28

I also thought that a possibility but I think it only has PAPIs on one side.

The last time I landed there was 1984 !!

dook 16th Feb 2019 17:36

Lorraine Chase and Luton ?

Self loading bear 16th Feb 2019 17:36

Newquay?
(since 1933)

TheiC 16th Feb 2019 17:42

Bournemouth perhaps

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 17:53

Nope, none of those. Look closely and you may be able to identify aircraft types. The Americans may have spent some time here......

Shackman 16th Feb 2019 18:17

Sort of looks like Mildenhall - but I was blinded by all the lights on my last approach there.

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 18:23

Getting warm. The 100th is a common link.

dook 16th Feb 2019 18:26

Fairford ?

I used to hate the "running rabbit" strobes.

However, how about Lakenheath. (100th...…)

Shackman 16th Feb 2019 18:27

Well it sure doesn't look like Thorpe Abbotts!

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 18:28

Nope, nearly there. Does this help?

Shackman 16th Feb 2019 18:30

Brize Norton?

Cows getting bigger 16th Feb 2019 18:31

Ta da. Glass of fizz to the 8 screw-driver. Over to you Shackman.

dook 16th Feb 2019 18:41

Well, it was always said that eight screws are better than two blow jobs !

Shackman 16th Feb 2019 19:04

OK Folks
Another one for your delectation

All is not what it seems. Away now for a few hours, but will check in later. Tally Ho

dook 16th Feb 2019 19:23

My first thought is of a film set.

North Weald ?

India Four Two 16th Feb 2019 21:03

What dook said, but South Cerney?

Shackman 16th Feb 2019 21:23

No

I'm standing next to a French Chateau

Bed time. Back tomorrow morning GMT

lauriebe 17th Feb 2019 00:12

Hawkinge perhaps?

oldpax 17th Feb 2019 01:46

Its Duxford! French chateau was a mock up on the far side of the airfield (Bof B movie)

Shackman 17th Feb 2019 08:00

Well done oldpax - 'twas indeed. If I had been standing there an hour earlier I would have had a starring role as the first person to be hit by a passing ME109 (remember the opening scenes!).
Over to you

oldpax 17th Feb 2019 09:49

OH as nothing to hand!Spent a day at Duxford as an extra for the Bof B film !!

Shackman 17th Feb 2019 10:18

LIkewise - a few of us came down from Oakington during night flying phase, which kept on being cancelled due to fog, and were 'co-opted' to appear in the background. It helped that some of the Varsity QFIs were flying in the film.

The 'French Chateau' looked very good from a distance, only close up did you see the wooden frame and painted canvas.
