A bit of a fraught atmosphere on WAMkIII these days. Anyway, could the latest challenge be Thurleigh? I once saw some publicity pics that BOAC did with one of their first 747s there.

We'll I thought that would be a hard one to get from that image, and I has quite a few more pictures for it.
Dulles it is. SLB has control. |
Apologies, I indeed forgot to add “if correct” I knew i was to sleep late this morning so did not wanted to keep everybody waiting. My sight is about as hazy as the next challenge. Specsavers? Pearl? Or less cognac? SLB |

Early Thursday morning. I'm actually quite surprised this 80+ year old airfield hasn't appeared on The List yet.

Er Gatwick? (OH if correct)
Nope, not Gatport Airwick. :)
If I see PAPIs, it's somewhat unusual to have them on both sides of the runway is it not ?
You do see PAPIs on both side. That's not too unusual.
I'm obviously getting out of touch these days then.
Are we outside the UK ? |
I’d hazard a guess at Shannon?....but on closer inspection I’d say not! |
Not Shannon. I think we're in the UK, hence my "I can't believe it" as far as the wiki list is concerned.. :)
I thought it might be Stansted but that isn't 80+ years old.
Could that be Prestwick? The only clue, really, is what looks like a hangar off to port.
I also thought that a possibility but I think it only has PAPIs on one side.
The last time I landed there was 1984 !! |
Lorraine Chase and Luton ?
Newquay? (since 1933) SLB |
Bournemouth perhaps
Nope, none of those. Look closely and you may be able to identify aircraft types. The Americans may have spent some time here......
Sort of looks like Mildenhall - but I was blinded by all the lights on my last approach there.
Getting warm. The 100th is a common link.
Fairford ?
I used to hate the "running rabbit" strobes. However, how about Lakenheath. (100th...…) |
Well it sure doesn't look like Thorpe Abbotts!
Brize Norton?
Ta da. Glass of fizz to the 8 screw-driver. Over to you Shackman.

Well, it was always said that eight screws are better than two blow jobs !
OK Folks
Another one for your delectation https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....db1756bd16.jpg All is not what it seems. Away now for a few hours, but will check in later. Tally Ho |
My first thought is of a film set.
North Weald ? |
What dook said, but South Cerney?
No
I'm standing next to a French Chateau Bed time. Back tomorrow morning GMT |
Hawkinge perhaps?
Its Duxford! French chateau was a mock up on the far side of the airfield (Bof B movie)
Well done oldpax - 'twas indeed. If I had been standing there an hour earlier I would have had a starring role as the first person to be hit by a passing ME109 (remember the opening scenes!).
Over to you |
OH as nothing to hand!Spent a day at Duxford as an extra for the Bof B film !!
LIkewise - a few of us came down from Oakington during night flying phase, which kept on being cancelled due to fog, and were 'co-opted' to appear in the background. It helped that some of the Varsity QFIs were flying in the film.
The 'French Chateau' looked very good from a distance, only close up did you see the wooden frame and painted canvas. |
This should not be to difficult https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....f18b60a4e.jpeg |
The Martinair 767 and the Delta cubi's tell me it might be a package holiday destination in the USA. Orlando International?
